Horror! Pressed the wrong button…

Firstly I would like to thank SoniX for UBU & to Fernando for this wonderful forum.

Been lurking for a while now, reading the wealth of info here, however, I’ll be the 1st to admit that I don’t understand it all.

Anyway, I’ve used UBU_1817 to update the latest BIOS for my ASRock H97M-Pro4 mobo, although I’m yet to actually flash the mobo itself.

I do have 1 question though; and please don’t take it the wrong way … I’m curious as to why UBU doesn’t include the 13.2 series/branch of the Intel RST(e) OROM and EFI SataDrivers?

Cheers

@ BazzaG:
Welcome at Win-RAID Forum and thanks for your comment about the UBU tool and this Forum!

Before you flash the modded BIOS into your ASRock mainboard BIOS chip, please read the start post of >this< thread.

Only SoniX can answer this question, but you can easily insert both Intel RAID ROM/SataDriver modules manually by using the AMI Aptio UEFI tool (>here< is the guide).

Regards
Fernando

Fernando … thanks muchly for your reply.

Yep I’ve read your guide for ASRock mobo’s, I extracted the “body” of the original ASRock BIOS (H97MP41.20) using UEFITool, then updated that with UBU and copied the updated BIOS to a small USB stick with the original name.

I’ll take a look at using MMTool.exe … what I really liked about UBU is that tool handled all of the extraction & replacement automatically … even a PC dummy like me can do it.

This might be a bit off-topic for this thread, but I’m building a NAS/HTPC/LIGHT gaming PC using:

* Fractual Design Node 804
* ASRock H97M Pro4
* Intel Core i3-4360
* Kingston HyperX FURY HX316C10FK2/8 8G (4Gx2)
* Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD
* HighPoint Rocket R640L PCI-e Controller
* Hitachi Deskstar NAS 4TB 0S03666 (x6)

* Windows 8.1.1 Pro 64bit

The SSD is attached to the R640L to be used for Windows & the 6 onboard SATA ports for the 6x HGST NAS HDD’s in a RAID5 array (to be used to store video/music/etc).

This is my 1st PC that I have built using RAID, so all of this is very new to me.

Just quickly … which series or branch of Intel RST(e) would you recommend?

Cheers
BazzaG…

I would install the Intel RST RAID driver v13.2.4.1000 using the Intel EFI RaidDriver (formerly named SataDriver) v13.2.0.2134, but you can take the latest Intel RST RAID driver/Utility from the v13.5 branch as well.

i would love to thank you fernando and sonix for the great tutorial and program.
i patched the modules of my z87pro4 mainboard without any issues.

now i have a few questions that arose while reading some of this big thread.
fernando you mentioned that the rst rom has no effect in ahci mode (correct me if i read you wrong) but i had a following "problem / cosmetical glitch" with the Windows Experience Index. im using a samsung 830 250gb ssd and for at least 6-8 months the WEI for the storage part dropped from 7.9 to 5.9 i did not look into it further because i did not notice any major slowdowns. now i had to rerun the WEI (because of the omega driver for my radeon card) i also got 7.9 on my SSD back (before using UBU the bios included version 12.5 of the rom and used the 13.2 drivers, now i have both 13.5) do you have an idea what could have happened here?

sonix/fernando i also updated the microcode and as desired the TSX feature of my i7-4770 dissapeared. now since the mainboard bios does not have a menu to get it back on (intel allowed that) the only way to get TSX working is to use the old microcode right?

@ General_Probe:
Welcome at Win-RAID Forum and thanks for your feedback!

The Windows Experience Index tool is not very reliable.
A storage performance WEI number 5.9 indicates, that the OS had seen your SSD as HDD (5.9 is the highest value for HDDs), whereas it showed you 7.9, when it successfully detected the SSD as SSD.
You can verify, whether the SSD has been correctly detected by the OS or not, by running the Win7 Defrag Tool.
Conclusion:
1. A temporary drop-down of the WEI storage score has nothing to do with the BIOS.
2. The performance of an Intel AHCI system will not be affected at all by the Intel RAID ROM/SataDriver modules, which are within the BIOS.

Fernando

Hi Fernando,

First of all, let me thank you for all the great work you do on this forum, you really know a lot on everything related to AHCI/RAID/SSD and always take the time to explain things to your audience. I’ve been reading various topics for a while and could use your advice on the following.

I have a Asus Z87 Sabertooth mobo, with BIOS 2103 and using the UBU tool 1.8.17 (thanks for that, SoniX! ) I succesfully modified the BIOS, with updated Intel OROM and EFI SataDriver to 13.5.0.2164. I use 2 SSD’s, both as single drives, in UEFI boot setup running Windows 8.1 x64.

My questions:

Is the updated OROM/EFI SataDriver used at all in this mode, or is it only active when using RAID mode, even when using the SSD’s as single drives and thus not in a RAID array? I thought I read in a post from you somewhere that the OROM does nothing when running in AHCI mode, but I might be wrong.

Is TRIM still supported when running in RAID mode, since the SSD’s would not be running in an array but independently?

Is it safe to assume that matching the OROM branch version to the same driver branch (v13.5) would yield better and more reliable performance, than mixing a v12 OROM with a v13 driver?

Thanks for your time and wisdom

Regards,
Sander

HI,
I managed to mod my bios. Thank you!

First of all thank you for this forum and knowlade shearing.
Im using ASUS rampage IV Gene board with 64bit W7.
It is X79 board with 3960x *Sandy Bridge.
I have connected only 2 SDD 840 evo in raid0.
I`m using last asus bios 4901 with some mods.

Bios was modded to:
OROM IRST 12.9.0.2006
OROM IRSTE 3.8.0.1029
EFI IRST 12.9.0.2006

At the moment I can see in the bios Raid0 on 12.9.0.2006. And with 12.9 drivers I got the best results in crystal mark. I understend that on x79 I should not go for orom 13.X as i will get worst performance. Am I correct?

From another treat I know that the best option would be try enterprice drivers but how to change in bios to use 3.8 instead 12.9??

@ Sandoz:

Hello Sander,
welcome at Win-RAID Forum and thanks for your kind words.

The Intel RAID ROM resp. EFI SataDriver BIOS modules are only used, when the Intel SATA Controller has been set to "RAID" mode.

Yes, TRIM will be active within the SSDs!

If you have set the Intel SATA Controller to "RAID" mode and want to get the best results (stability and performance), you should run an Intel RST RAID driver, which belongs to the same development branch (example: v13.5) as the Intel RAID ROM/EFI SataDriver modules, which are within the BIOS.

Fernando

@ Fishman95:
Welcome at Win-RAID Forum!

Yes, the Intel RST v13 series are designed and optimized for the latest Intel 8- and 9-Series Chipsets, whereas X79 systems belong to the Intel 6-Series Chipsets (C600 Chipset Series).

You may try it, but according to the feedback I got from X79 users the RST drivers and RAID ROM/SataDriver modules are the better choice for X79 RAID systems.

This is not easy to understand.
Please explain, what you mean and to whom it concerns.

Ah, that’s the answer I was hoping for! I can now happily reinstall Windows, but this time in RAID mode and have the benefits of the new OROM working in tandem with the latest drivers. Thank you so much for your quick reply and keep on the good work

Sander

SoniX has attached files to this post OROM_VBIOS_1035_and_VBT_for_GOP ASIS Z87-Plus.rar

even with UBU 1.8.17 there’s no RST UEFI ROM MODULE 13.5.0.2164 for x79… why is this?

Yes I can add it manually just wondering why it isn’t included in UBU :slight_smile: Thanks!

I have 2 questions.
1) Which RAID mode is used?
2) What is the mode you have full UEFI or Lagacy?

Sorry… I’m just now reading these older posts :confused:
1)RAID-0
2)Full UEFI
