[Guide] CoffeeLake CPUs on Skylake and KabyLake mainboards

This is BIOS-lock feature from ASUS. Described below appliable only for B0 Coffee (i3-8xxx etc).
Check actual ME version on your board by Intel ME Detection Tool.
Three options exists:
1) Your ME is already between 11.6 - 11.7 and it’s ok.
In this case you need to reflash only BIOS-region from modbios.
Just use AFUWIN 3.05.04 for flashing, it will help to get around ASUS BIOS-lock problem. Command: afuwinx64 modbios.bin /GAN
Or disable BIOS-lock first and flash with FPT then. Command: fptw64 -rewrite -bios -f modbios.bin
2) Your ME lower than 11.6.
Update ME to 11.6 - 11.7 version by any official method, then go to point 1.
3) Your ME 11.8.
Use SPI programmer to reflash bios fully or try to unlock regions by HDA_SDO and then flash full image with any software tool.

@svarmod Thanks for that detail though I thought that there were certain regions besides ME that needed to be modded and unlocked which is why you either do a flashback with shorted pins or use a flash programmer. As far as unlocking the Asus bios locks this guide helped me: [GUIDE] Grub Fix Intel FPT Error 368 - BIOS Lock Asus/Other Mod BIOS Flash

Also, changing subject, on my modded Asus Z270-WS board I have noticed lately lower voltages and Asus running a 4.5 ghz profile on my 9700K. Was kind of confused because I thought the 9700K runs at 4.9ghz Turbo. In any case I believe I understand what is going on with Asus and its Multicore Enhancements feature. Turning that feature off brought the max speed reported in bios up to 4.9ghz. Not sure if the voltages were corrected by turning it off however I think the bios misidentifies the 9700K as a 7700K as does other apps such as old version of CPU-Z and Coretemp and others as the 7700K turbo speed is indeed 4.5ghz.

So I think this is whats going on when I set 1.275 vcore and I get 1.225 is because that 1.225 volts is what is appropriate for 4.5 ghz and not 4.9 ghz in consideration of an i7 7700K profile loaded in bios. According to the bios description even turning off Asus Multicore Enhancements loads Intel’s defaults for that cpu which is probably what I want though not sure if the board can handle all the watts. Maybe it can I don’t know. So fwiw I have turned on in bios VRM phase control to ‘Extreme’ and cpu power delivery to 110%. Too bad we can’t mod the built in profiles. Any other ideas you guys have please share.

Thanks.

My ME version is 11.7.0.1229 . do I need SPI programmer ? :frowning:

No, 11.7.0.1229 is OK.
Use for flashing AFU 3.05.04 with /GAN param.

Hi, Any way to mod the BIOS for 9900K but no need for CPU pin mod? I am asking for an Asus WS-Z270.
Thx.

CoffeeTime 0.85a released.
Nothing special.
Added universal ME for Xeon, Vbios base up to 1062, updated microcodes, unlocked Xeon autoupdate for most of 200-series boards and added pretty nice experimental function for ASUS boards.

" Shorted CPU pins may be replaced to soldered bridge near to Embedded Controller directly on board."

Can you point out how do that on Asus WS Z270?

Thx.

@Bruno ,

I got a working bios ver 701 for the Z270-WS modded with a 9700k if you want a copy.

Just thought of a great idea for simplifying the physicsl part of the coffee lake mod. If we could fabricate a thin 3d printed plastic plate that would fit in the socket under the cpu matched in size and direction and dimension with the proper pads either splinted or blocked out you could idiot proof the modding process. No more rubbing pencil or applying copper tape or silver paint. All you would have to do is drop in the matching coffelake cpu modding plate for an msi, gigabyte, or Asus motherboard into the socket and place your cpu right over it. Only thing left of course be the software mod. Think this is a great idea.

About i3-9100F - I have it works well on MSI Z270 Krait Gaming after modding.
Thanks to svarmod.
I used his program CoffeeTime 0.85
My processor has stepping B0

Modded bios 2202 on for my Maximus VIII Formula using CoffeeTime 85a using a 9900k, isolated the pins along with connecting the two. My system just shuts off right after I press the power button. I added the Skylake microcode and my 6700k still boots properly. What might be the cause? Using the suggest 11.7 ME.

@WannaBeOCer ,

Try using the other simple coffeelake modding tool instead. Also maybe its a bad cpu or the blocking out + shorting pins wasnt done right. Maybe you failed to write to all of your bios sections. If you do a bios dump check to see if all your regions are unlocked? If so then use the simple tool instead to make new bios and flash via fptw after fd44 transfer. If not use flash usb programmer. Then try again. Give system time to restart as it will post over several times. Also please watch what your LED post codes are?

WannaBeOCer
Instant shutdown after poweron - 99% it’s problem with ME.
Did you use SPI programmer or unlocks regions with HDA_SDO pinmod?

@Bruno How far along are you with your mod? Like to compare notes since we have same motherboard.

Hey, i’m new here.
I have a MSI Z270 Mpowe Gaming Titanium and want to run a 8700k on it.

IN CoffeTime i get the message that i have to go with a compatible Z370 region.
I tried one of the Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon but it didnt work.
Does anyone have experience with MSI Z270 Boards?

Ty for help

@svarmod I used a programmer and downgraded to version 11.7.0.1229.

Can you use I3-9100F ?? What is the stepping in you processor?

@svarmod I’m pretty sure you’re right it was related to the ME. I ended up just making a new BIOS using the tool you provided and programmed my chip with that bios instead of using FlashBack.

Maximus VIII Formula now works with a 9900k with HT using bios 2202.

Nice!
ASUS overvoltaging Vcore at auto. To fix this set up "IA AC/DC Load Line" options to 0.01.

@davidm71 I’ve used the tool to mod the BIOS, but I am looking for a way to mod only the board whithout the need to mod the CPU pins.
