while all previous windows / afu methods failed, flashrom method successfully reads/writes BIOS on “Dell Inc.” “Inspiron 5576”
Small update, I succeeded on my ASUS Z87-K using FreeDOS and AFUDOS and made sure to replace the FD44 with the backed up one from the MoBo. I used the UEFITool v0.28.0 making sure to check padding against the original BIOS image. It boots from the nvme on the PCIe slot with the converter PCB. Crazy… I can provide the files if interested.
Hello @Fernando
Is the link to AFU WIN working ?
It seems to be asking for a login

I have been able to update the microcode on the most recent bios for this board.
But that’s as far as I can get. I can’t update any FFS or attempt to add reBar without it throwing an error saying it’s not a valid BIOS file in EZ Flash.
The Bios Flashback doesn’t cooperate either. It will blink 3-5 times then remain solid.
I think my modded BIOS is good to go, but I can’t for the life of me, figure out how to get around the security checks/Aptio V capsule.
I’d prefer not to go the CH341 … I haven’t played with that in a long while.
Does anyone know of a work around, or could point me in the right direction? I’ve been searching for anything on the topic as it relates to this board but it seems like I picked an unpopular one. ![]()
Thank you!,

So how did you flash the mod updated mcodes…??? The update mcode file is a MODified file…
I started small with a microcode update and no other changes. It flashed using the EZ Flash 3 without issue.
Literally, any other change other than microcode, and it won’t take. I’m reading as much as I can to try and figure out as to why.
I’m trying to make sense of stripping the CAP from the bios region and doing the mods on a rom, then putting it all back together to use the Flashback option. The process seems somewhat ambiguous.
I want to do this right the first time. Or at the very least, be able to fix a mistake quickly and get it right the second time.
Best way and recommended method are ASUS USB BFB, use small disks, fat32 and try different brands, test first with original CAP file. Some Asus boards are “picky” on this…
Intel FPT tool is another option, if the tool can access SPI regions for write operations,
unlocked FD.
EDIT: Yeah, my bad…AMD platform.
And yes, AMI MMTool will break CAP signature, for this remove CAP header by hex, later add it for complete valid CAP

BFB is the approach I’m trying to exploit.
I don’t think FPT is an option as the X399 is an AMD chipset.
I think the issue I’m having is making the file properly after adding the rebar FSS with MMTool. It’s unsigning the CAPSULE. (although, if I update the EFI or OROM it also won’t work either).
I’m trying to figure out how I put the complete file together given that it’s a Aptio V setup and a lot of the direction I’m reading here is for Aptio IV and a lot of reference to /GAN, which I know doesn’t apply to me.
Is there direction on how (or if) I should disassemble the stock file, mod it, then combine it back to the stock capsule? Or is none of that necessary as UBU / MMtool would do this on the back end?
Am I way off base here?
EDIT: Got it. All the updates, microcode, ReBar, UEFI-Patch … it flashed on, seems to be working. Going to have to do some more testing, but at first glance it looks good.
