[Guide] How to update the CPU microcodes on a non-UEFI Award/Phoenix BIOS

.

Ahh! I didnā€™t even notice! When I copied the microcodes from the extract folder, thatā€™s the one thatā€™s marked bad by MCE when the file is duped (But F32 is the one doubled at the end).
So when I tossed out F34, I forgot to get a new copy, then removed the F32 at the end and must have been thinking that was the ā€œBadā€ one without looking back.

Iā€™ll make new one shortly and add here, sorry about that! * Attached now, all checked and rechecked again this time, no double and includes F34

I think itā€™s finally done, except your re-edit to update that rom!

G41MCF.zip (474 KB)

.

I was wondering if the many codes was making cbrom choke, but it seemed if 34 or 37 all those versions did the dupe thing so maybe it hasbe less than that still.

Anyway, all fixed and attached above now if you want. I think those you mentioned 1067a and 10676 does cover most of the current BIOS most would use.
But you never know what you might want to test or play with and I think thatā€™s why we all always try to leave all the older codes there too.
Really, if you wanted, you could only use a single one for your current CPU, so a single microcode in NCPUCODE and that would be fine too, if you wanted to push the minimum

.

Youā€™re welcome! All looks good and correct now, right?
Youā€™ll have to post your final re-edit for everyone to use, with the update Atheros rom you mentioned

Hi

I was looking at the July microcode updates with 206A7 going to 0x2E from 0x2D.

I have verified the error in my registry file to enable the variant 4 patch, so Iā€™m going to take a stab at this again.

Canā€™t even get past

3- Drag your Bios file over MC.EXE then press ENTER. You should see a list of your microcodes. Each microcode is listed as ā€œLatestā€ or ā€œOutdatedā€.

In W10 File Explorer it is not possible to drag file and drop on another file in same folder, nor across separate windows. It just moves or copies at folder level.

Help!

@winactive

I have Windows 10 and it is working.

I suspect either you didnā€™t do step one: ā€œ1- Copy your Bios in your MC Extractor folderā€ or your Windows 10 is not set anymore with its default behavior.

In any case, you can try instead this work around:

1- While holding the CTRL key, right click on your bios file and click "Copy as path"

2- Double click MCE.exe

3- Paste your path in MCE, press SPACE and write -CONT. So it should look like this: ā€œyour-path-hereā€ -cont

4- Press enter

This should give you the same thing but with an error that it didnā€™t manage to convert the file. The error is normal and you can dismiss it because the microcodes were already converted in the bios.

Thanks, I donā€™t understand any behaviour that is not default. I have not knowingly installed anything to prevent File Explorer being default. I have just reset defaults to be sure and it still does not work.

Holding SHIFT makes better sense than CTRL

Edit: Nevermind, the download I got from the MCExtractor page didnā€™t have the .exe anyway. It was just a database update. Those pages are not clear unless maybe if you are a frequent visitor.

The work around is now included in the "FAQ and problems" section for anyone having the same problem.

Hi Guys,

This forum is one of greatest place I know (thx Fernando) and helped me many-many times, only needed to read and dig very deep.
Lately I made myself the cpu microcode update -with your guide, help and instructions - on Asrock Z68 and Asus Z170 because of spectre, and this would be the goal on my dell latitude E5420 laptop.
After reading almost an afternoon in this forum and threads of mydigitallife, I became uncertain of my success. Extracting dell bios file was the first difficulty and then lost myself totallyā€¦

If anyone who has some free time and would help me or made this job, I would appreciate it.

Appreciate @Lost_N_BIOS , any advice to reflash hdr? I am reading this article: https://lnrsoft.com/how-to-re-flash-the-ā€¦ng-a-usb-drive/

Sorry, I have no experience with HDR flashing, but I read similar article before I posted that too, saying much the same things. Few I read only said remove main battery though, not CMOS, but I guess both being removed wouldnā€™t hurt.
Itā€™s good he mentioned a certain USB port, I saw several comments of some port work and others donā€™t, and that probably varies between models. So you may need to try them all.

I also read the name of the file matters too, but itā€™s model specific and didnā€™t always match the model or stock BIOS name too, so you may have to dig around for more info on your model in particular rather than general Dell based guide/info.

Well, after 2 days of diging and searching I give up to do it by myself because of high risk. Thanks for the efforts.
Otherwiseā€¦ I found some promise from Dell to get bios update of Latitude E5420: https://www.dell.com/support/article/hu/ā€¦roducts?lang=en

Maybe others are also expecting one from the listā€¦

So you couldnā€™t get it via USB recovery methods? Looks like they will soon push out an update!

Hello guys i have the Gigabyte H67ma-usb3-b3 revision 1.0 motherboard and i wanted to update the microcode for the 206A7 to 2E. I managed to updated it without errors in MC extractor but when i try to flash the bios in qflash it says "Invalid Bios image".Anyone has any suggestions?
(There are two 206A7 microcodes in the stock bios and i only replaced one of them so the mc extractor doesnt show any error).
(Also i have used cbrom155 as suggested for gigabyte mobos)
I have attached the Stock Bios, Mod Failed bios, Stock Microcodes, New 206A7 Microcode.
Thanks!.(All that from Windows 10 64bit 17134.191).

@ektorasdj

Did you try replacing a module (usually the last one) to restore the integrity of the Bios?
