@tzolak
Please note that all the Bios on the first post are not updated anymore by the thread owner. The latest version is v5 and can be found in the post #110.
Oh. Didn’t know that. I’ll have to check that out then.
Can that be flashed through flashback or do I need to go modify the lock?
Thanks @Phoenix48
Ahh! Sorry about the guide stuff, I always forget and think Intel board as default in my brain!
As for the cap/rom, a capsule is a rom BIOS with a security capsule around it, that is all. If your board had been an Intel board and the guide applied, then you would remove the capsule and use the rom to update via FPT
So, ignore all I said about the guide, apologies again! You’ll have to use AFU or USB Flashback
Or you may also have luck with this custom Asus AFU based flasher - ASUS Flash Utility v1.13 for WinPE (x86/x64)
I haven’t had any kind of luck using conventional flashing or various programs from this forum…I’m not sure what I"m missing…other people have been able to.
I’ve got 2 different modded bios versions…
Been working on this a week and am no further than when I started…
Any other advice?
ASUS ROG Crosshair V Formula Z…currently running the last official BIOS update which is 2201 (aka C5FZ.cap)…Tried the 3 methods from here: [Guide] How to flash a modded AMI UEFI BIOS
Tried everything I"ve seen here…unless my flash drives are the issue…but I don’t have anything smaller than the 8gb except my ancient 512mb which is what I’ve been working on.
Find other smaller USB Sticks, this is often the issue. Can you flash another version via USB Flashback with any of your USB? Try last older version, so you’ll know it’s changed once done.
Try to borrow some cheap small ones from neighbor or friend
Bios updated to v6
Changelog:
[Changed] - EFI LAN Intel PRO/1000 UNDI v8.3.10 -----> v8.4.09

I got my machine to recognize a 970 EVO in a pci slot. I installed windows and ran into major hard drive timeouts. I reinstalled the bios and the timeouts have stopped but total system stability is awful. My 9590 ran rock solid at 5ghz 2400mhz ram speed before I updated the bios. Now I have CPU freezes at 4700 and 1600 MHZ. Anyone have any idea whats going on? Is the speed of the drive crashing the PCI bus?
Since windows update 1809 I have had crashes on my formula Z with a evo 960 and also on another 990fx based system with port resets/errors on my sata controllers as shown in windows event viewer.
(I am using the last mod bios from the OP, and will not update again until windows update has fixed their stuff or AMD provides a fix)
However if I unplug my optical drives (both blu ray drives) the computers becomes stable.
So I think we need an updated driver from AMD to fix this 1809 issues as I can’t update my sata driver since the 1809, the latest driver from AMD just wont update SATA for me.
I have tried plugging my blu ray back in several times and every time I do it becomes weirdly unstable( 2 different system and drives), unplugging gets it working again.
So if you have weird issues in windows 10, try unplugging your optical drives and see if things improve.
All the spectres/meltdown fixes forced into windows will probably need updated drives to fully sort out even old stable hardware.
PS: And Cheers to Stickmode and Phoenix48 for the nvme bios has given my old fx system a new lease on life as a htpc.
Fist of all Thank you Stickmode an phoenix48 for the modded bios…finaly booting from my evo
But the problem i am facing now is extreme slow ssd speed on my SATA ports (SATA III ssd’d 64 GB) it will not get past 220 MB/s even when i striped 2 ssd’ it wouldnt go beyond 250 MB/s
I put all SATA channels in RAID mode so basicly dat should have AHCI compatibilaty
Does anybody have an idear what else i can try to resolve this problem
thanx in advance
Jasper
Make sure your drives are connected to the correct controller (SB950 I assume), not the ASM1061. Sorry I can’t specify which are which, your boards specs say all are red?
They are , and yes they are all red
i did switch them around and that didnt make any difference
Bios updated to v7

I cannot flash my bios using any of the 4 .cap files you attached. I keep getting the same error message: Security verification failed. I went to the Asus website and updated to version 2201, downloaded your Ultimate version and placed on a freshly formatted USB drive. Went into EZ flash 2 Utility (v.01.04) and tried to flash using that file. Didn’t work. I read somewhere that I had to use the white USB in the back and press and hold the ROG Connect button for 5 seconds, which seems to have done something as my computer resets when I do that and the link icon on that button lights up. The USB port even says ROG Connect on it. I know Windows 10 is installed on m.2 but I just can’t boot to it. Bios doesn’t recognize it.
What am I doing wrong?

@Tanisll - USB Flashback is what you need to use, you cannot flash mod BIOS via EZ Flash within the BIOS. White USB Port, you were doing it correct possibly, but maybe not waiting or maybe your USB stick is not compatible.
https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.ph…-BIOS-Flashback
Smaller, cheaper USB is better and more compatible (256MB-2GB), sometimes larger 4-8GB or above have compatibility problems, same with USB 3 devices.
You should see light LED flash on your USB if it has LED, and light on board button will get faster as it nears the end, sometimes takes 2-5 minutes.
Make sure .cap BIOS file is in root of USB, not in an folder.
@Tanisll
Please, be also aware that no bios in the first post are updated anymore by the original thread owner. The last bios update is v7 and can be downloaded from post #152.
@Phoenix48 @Lost_N_BIOS I am trying to use a XPG SX8200 with a pci to mvne adapter on the Crosshair V Formula Z motherboard. I am trying to flash the bios using the flashback utility with the v7 driver and I cant get it to flash. I was wondering if you could help me out.
Will this XPG SSD drive work with the modded bios or am I wasting my time. Second, if the bios flash works, what should i see the name as in the BIOS main tab. And finally, is using a 32gb USB a waste of time ? Id hate to go out and buy a smaller one and get the same results.
Thanks for your hard work on this btw!
@Bigbadaboom
I don’t see any reason why it would not work. Once it is detected, it should appear as something like “PATA disk”. As for the 32 Gb USB, i am not sure if using your 32Gb USB is a waste of time. In fact, maybe it won’t flash at all because Flashback don’t always recognize a USB key higher than x Gb. x being a number between 2 to 8 that i don’t know exactly and it may also, for all i know, depend on who manufactured the USB key. Lost_N_Bios mentioned this recognition problem with USB key that are too big for Flashback in the post # 154. So i suggest that you try to flash with a smaller USB key.
Even with that said, take the time to eliminate all other possibility first. As you said, it would be frustrating to buy a smaller one and don’t get a better result. For example, make sure your USB key is formated in the right format (FAT32 is usually the best bet). Also be sure you insert it in the right USB port behind the PC. You may also make sure you press the flashback button long enough for Flash back to start and, after, let it run long enough to finish. I know some of those advice may sound elementary but most people forget at least one of those so i prefer to say them anyway and be sure.
You can try your 32GB USB, sometimes it’s OK but not high chance of success. If no luck then try to find old cheap smaller ones around your house. If you purchase any new ones, get a few smallest cheapest ones you can find.
To add to the above, be sure you don’t rename the BIOS file, and be sure to put the BIOS file on the root of the USB (Not in any folders)
Went out this morning and purchased the smallest drive i could find, its a Verbatim 8gb. Worked first time as described in the instructions. Thanks for everyone’s help on this.
Great you found a working USB so you were able to flash!
