This thread serves as a useful warning to the uninitiated, but I’m not confident I understand the known proper/improper upgrade paths. If somebody is starting with a working but outdated 12th gen PowerEdge, what is the safest way to avoid all of this trouble (with no OS on server)? Is there an important difference between the “Platform-Specific Bootable ISO” versus the more generic Server Update Utility (SUU) if connected to internet?
@alexthefifth I looked at your logs again it it looks like when you make the SD card image its partitions are different than mine. There may be some differences between the R620 / R720 firmware that isn’t apparent here or there was something wrong with the TFTP load of the image. Hope you can figure it out.
Thank you so much for all your work @Darkendvoid Any chance you could post the "printenv" from your machine? No worries if not. I just want to compare mine to see where the difference might be
Hi. I’m very thankful for your guide. I carefully tried to follow it step by step on dell r520. i am using firmimg.d7 1.66v from dell website. Unfortunately after going carefully through all of it I get always message about creating deafult partitions. Here is my console output.

So close yet so far.
Im stuck here and i would be realy greatful for some advice.
Hi, it appears that I’ve bricked my iDrac as well after attempting to upgrade the firmware. I’ve been going through this thread, how can I connect via UART, can this only be done using a Rasberry PI?

You can just use a "UART to USB converter" cable. They go for around $15 on amazon, and around $5 on ebay
Hello, I have a Dell T320 that is showing the following error: "SWC0700: iDRAC is not ready. The configuration cannot be accessed." I’ve read the entire thread and I want to debug idrac but I can’t find the iDRAC_UART pins on the mainboard Can someone help me?

@Rob.vicz I have no idea, never looked at a t320, but as a "hint" the idrac uart port should be near the SH_4A cpu chip that runs the idrac code. So if you can find the SH_4A you have a better chance of locating the other stuff. This is marked SH77572, about 1" square BGA package, usually has a board white silk screen next to it "iDrac".

Thank you, has anyone taken photos of their soldering? Did you just solder the wires to the UART on the mobo?

https:/ /imgur.*com/a/S7ECRoP The pin pads I found is next to "SUPERVU_Debug" but there is no mention of idrac.
Hi all, I ran into the same issue with my dell T620. I found similair EMMC pads, and the ground pins also where in similair positions: ht*tps://cdn.*discordapp.com/attachments/6…keAf6Lq9YHV.png I have two motherboards, one died with an issue on the power rail so I soldered wires to that one to no avail. Then I made a pogo pin array, as I did not trust my soldering: https://media.*discordapp.net/attachments…=507&height=676 I am sure this one worked, but to no avail aswell… I do have connectors called BMC Jtag, though I have no clue which one it points too: https://media.*discordapp.net/attachments…=901&height=676 And I have a connector called BMC Uart at the corner of the board: https://media.*discordapp.*net/attachments…=507&height=676 Now where to start… All photos in links you can do something with:

@Don_prince I can’t see much in your photos, they are too low resolution, “BMC UART” is mostly likely the correct one Here’s where the UART is on my T620: https://i.imgur.com/yREu9Qx.jpg I decided not to solder and just use an elastic band to apply pressure to the pins lol and a binder clip to hold the USB->UART cable in place, here’s a closeup:https://i.imgur.com/Vfe6Ic7.jpg https://i.imgur.com/5HaXkZU.png
@alexthefifth that was one of the ones I identified, Do we also have to do the Uboot interupt? I guess we would need to use the SPI DBG pins for that? Where did you get your pogo pin thing? I could 3d print another one, but mine get rather bulky due to the resolution of the printer
I do believe I had to interrupt Uboot by using the SPI DBG pins yes My pogo pin thing is just 4 of these male “dupont” header/jumper cables taped together to make a rigid structure: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2396/0…PG?v=1506712477 something like: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32891879…781440307%22%7D These 4-pin “RGB” connectors would probably also work well and no need for tape: https://www.pcboard.ca/image/cache/catal…r-3-600x315.jpg
I saw the prices of one and 3d printed another one. I still have loads of pogo pins left…

I have a usb uart/ttl thing on its way so I should be good to try it tomorrow.
Pinout is:
Square one (no idea) dont connect????
RX
TX
GND
Correct?
Only 3 of the 4 need to be connected, yes. Not sure which one is RX/TX, I usually experiment swapping back and forth until something appears on screen
well, I got a result: ht"tps://media."discordapp."net/attachments/101728343254114304/898697197804204062/unknown.png Proud of that, but can’t make heads or tails from it. I tried baudrate 9600 and 11500 but the result was the same weird things… N▒▒▒▒▒ɠ▒͇▒▒▒▒▒▒’p▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒.▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒g▒▒ɇ▒s▒Ȁӫ▒·▒▒▒▒▒▒ȇ▒▒▒▒Nx▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒·▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒h▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ȧG▒Δ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒
need to correct myself – on my T620 the pad name is not SPI DBG – it is "SW7" (on other PowerEdge models it is apparently "SW2"), and the pin to interrupt uboot is SW7-2-1 (need to ground it before powering on the server) picture here: https://i.imgur.com/TAwKepQ.jpg
