Randomly freezing after upgrading from W10 to W11

Hello everyone,

I’m hoping someone here might have experience with this kind of issue on older AMD hardware.

System (Shipping PC at work):

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P

  • Chipset: AMD 970 / SB950

  • Storage: Kingston SH103S3 240GB SATA SSD

  • GPU: Radeon HD 6670

  • OS: Windows 11 (installed via Rufus bypass for TPM/Secure Boot)

  • BIOS Mode: UEFI (was Legacy previously)

  • Virtualization: Disabled (hypervisorlaunchtype = off)

Background:
This machine used to run Windows 10 perfectly. I upgraded it to Windows 11. Installation completes, but the system randomly freezes or reboots.

I analyzed the crash dump and the bugcheck is:

Bug check code: 0x00000133
Bug check string: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
Caused by driver: ntoskrnl.exe

So the kernel is crashing due to something timing out (likely a driver).

What I have tried so far:

  • Disabled Hypervisor (bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off)

  • Disabled network adapter and USB devices during testing

  • Installed drivers using Snappy Driver Installer

  • Checked SSD firmware using Kingston SSD Manager (no firmware updates available)

  • Verified that Windows is using Microsoft storage drivers

  • Tried Windows Update drivers

  • Verified that no virtualization features (Hyper-V etc.) are enabled

Current storage controller situation in Device Manager:
Under IDE/ATA controllers I see:

  • Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller

  • AMD SATA Controller

  • ATA Channel 0

  • ATA Channel 1

The SSD shows as:
Kingston SH103S3 240G SATA Disk Device
Driver provider: Microsoft
Driver date: 06/21/2006

Other observations:

  • System freezes seem random but often during system activity or updates.

  • The machine previously ran Windows 10 without a single stability issue.

  • Another PC built from my older gaming hardware shows similar freezing behavior under Windows 11.

Questions:

  1. Could the AMD SB950 SATA controller be causing DPC watchdog issues with Windows 11?

  2. Is there a recommended AHCI / modded SATA driver for this chipset that works better with Windows 11?

  3. Would forcing a different storahci configuration or disabling SATA power management help?

  4. Has anyone run Windows 11 reliably on the 970A-UD3P platform?

Any suggestions or known stable driver combinations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Welcome to the Win-Raid Forum!
Since your problem seems to be OS related, I have moved this thread into the “Windows 11” Forum Category.
Good luck!

I don’t believe a system incompatible with Windows 11 would work without issues, given that it is a hardware requirement. Bypassing the compatibility check does not make a system capable of running Windows 11. The issue is not outdated drivers, but the lack of the necessary hardware.
