Hi,
I just built a new system using an Intel motherboard (DZ87KLT-75k). I have an SSD (Samsung 840 pro), from which I would like to use the hardware encryption feature. For this you need to set a hard disk password in UEFI, and this works only in AHCI mode.
However I would like to run the controller in RAID mode because I need to setup a RAID1 array with my other drives to secure my storage.
I searched for a long time before having to reach the conclusion that it is impossible to set a hard disk password when a controller is in RAID Mode. This is a limitation that cannot be bypassed.
So I am now searching the other way around, and while doing so I wound up on this forum :). My question would be, is it possible to setup a RAID array in RAID 1 if the SATA controller is in AHCI mode? As far as I understood, AHCI is supposed to include RAID, correct? The motherboard is a DZ87KLT-75k, with native Z87 SATA control I suppose?
Is there any way to setup a RAID array while in AHCI mode? Maybe with modified or older drivers? The UEFI bios does not give the option to set the controller in AHCI + RAID, it’s one or the other only.
Thanks!

Welcome at Win-RAID Forum!
No, that is impossible. The only chance to run your SSD in AHCI and the HDDs in RAID mode would be, that your mainboard has an additional non-Intel RAID SATA Controllers from different vendor, but AFAIK your mainboard only has SATA ports with an Intel chip.
It is vice versa: The RAID mode usually supports the AHCI features as well.
No, this is impossible. The Intel SATA Controller can be set either as Intel SATA AHCI Controller or as Intel SATA RAID Controller without the option to use them both at the same time. This is not possible, because both SATA Controllers (AHCI and RAID) have a different DeviceID and are managed a totally different way.

Fernando
haha I really got it completely in reverse. sorry for the question, I should have done my homework better.
however something is not quite clear to me - you’re saying RAID usually supports AHCI, but then that the controller will run either in RAID or in AHCI mode. Since my controller is setup in RAID mode, what about my optical drives? And the SSD itself, which is not defined in any RAID array? Are they running in AHCI nonetheless? Is there any way to check this?
and thanks for the super-fast reply!
I have written, that RAID usually supports the AHCI features (like NCQ and hot plugging). So there is no contradiction between both informations I gave you.
No, they are running in RAID mode, although they will not be members of a RAID array.
Fernando, I am terribly sorry if my last post came out wrong. I absolutely didn’t mean to imply you provided contradictory informations! I don’t know how this works and it wasn’t clear to me how those type of devices worked in RAID mode - it is clear now however! I am really sorry for the misunderstanding.
So I guess my only possibility would be to find a way to manage the SATA password while in RAID mode. I’ll do some more digging, although I doubt this is possible.
Thanks again!
No problem. What I have written was just a clarification.
