ASUS Z170M-PLUS how do I update very old firmware?

Hi all,

My Z170M-PLUS motherboard has firmware version 0704 and I want to update to the latest (3601).
The latest firmwares can be found here.
Normally I would just load the new firmware from within the the BIOS’s EZ Flash 3 Utility, but I noticed the warning in the FAQ here, saying:

If your BIOS Version of ASUS 100 series MB is under 1800, and you want to upgrade BIOS to support the latest 7th Intel CPU, please do remember to update BIOS two times to 30xx version manually

Now the problem is, I don’t quite understand what this means.
Do I need to update straight to 3601 and then repeat the same process, or is it something else that I need to do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I understand ASUS’s notes, the second manual BIOS update is only required, if you want to get support of a CoffeeLake (7th generation) Intel CPU.
