ASUS Z87 Deluxe/Quad TPM 2.0 Support (or lack thereof)...

New to the forum (signed up yesterday or the day before).

I have a ASUS Z87 Deluxe/Quad with the latest (2103) BIOS, which is now quite dated (2014). I also have the TPM 2.0 module installed, and have verified (through the TPM firmware utility, which can “see” the module) that the firmware on it is 5.63.3353.0 (which is newer than any of the updates I had anyway).

At the time ASUS made the last BIOS update, only TPM 1.2 was supported. I checked ASUS’ other Z87 based boards and determined that the SABRETOOTH-Z87 board received a newer bios than it’s 2103 (3 years later), which is BIOS 2302, among changes was addition of TPM 2.0 support.

I determined (through the report function of MMTOOL, for both the Sabretooth 2103 and 2302) what areas of the (SABRETOOTH) BIOS were new, and exported 30 GUID (2 of which were unmodified/same).

I then proceeded to import/replace the 30 into the Z87 Deluxe/Quad BIOS (actually I used a modded one that supported new Microcodes updates and NVme support mostly because for my CPU 4771 000306C3 the 2103 original has mc19 and the mod has mc28).

I have tried about a dozen different USB sticks of varying sizes and makes (from 64MB to 32GB) trying FAT and FAT32 with (according to ASUS) “Requires a single sector USB flash drive in FAT16 / 32 format.”, all to no avail.

I cannot seem to flash it in windows either (appears on the surface to work, though the BIOS remains original), and without flashback working, this would leave it open to bricking.

I had links to the two sabertooth BIOS updates, as well as the two Z87 Deluxe BIOS updates, but as this is my first post, I am not allowed any external links.

I got the NvMe modded BIOS from this site, but can’t include that link either)

(all of the work I did was using MMTOOL)

is this a sound course of action, or am I going about this the wrong way?

@Reed_Righthead : Welcome to the Win-RAID Forum!

You can nevertheless put links into your post, if you put a space character into them. Our experts will be able to use such "links".

Why don’t you attach it?
Good luck!

the previously-modded Z87 Deluxe/Quad BIOS (Z87D.RAR) I got from this site, at the location t3517f44-OFFER-ASUS-Z-DELUXE-updated-BIOS-v-NVMe-mod.

How did I discover the differences between the two Sabertooth-Z87 BIOS, you may wonder? well, I loaded each BIOS into MMTOOL and generated a report from each, then I loaded both reports into NOTEPAD++ (64) and used the compare function (plugin), and it showed the differences. I exported the afffected GUID (30), then loaded in the Z87 Deluxe/Quad BIOS and replaced those already existing, and inserted those missing. However, when I inserted the new ones, the new ones inserted at the end of the volumes, rather than near the replaced items. Being new to BIOS modding, I had not expected this.

Am I on the right track? is there a better way to incorporate the differences that I have yet to explore?

I cannot seem to get flashback working despite trying an array of different makes and sizes, and I couldn’t seem to flash any other way (though I don’t want to brick the board either).

today I used AMIBCP (4) to have a look at the BIOS(s) as well.

I have an ASUS Z87-Deluxe/Quad whereas the other fellow has an ASUS Z87-Deluxe/Dual.

(as you can see the last BIOS for the Z87-Deluxe was the same version and date as the second to last for the Sabertooth)

if only ASUS had made a last BIOS for the Z87-Deluxe series as well…

I checked using Infineon’s firmware update utility that indeed it can “see” my TPM R2.0 module and says its firmware is 5.63.3353.0, which is
newer than any update I found for it anyway.

Differences between Sabertooth-Z87-ASUS-2103 of (TPM 1.2) and Sabertooth-Z87-ASUS-2302 (TPM 2.0)

(using the more comprehensive report tool of UEFITool NE Alpha 0.58 this time, and still using Notepad++ x64 and the Compare plugin therein…):

that’s all folks…

Please note that when I post these messages, alot of the spacing gets removed, which may make them harder to read…

I have an ASUS Z87-Deluxe/Quad whereas the other fellow has an ASUS Z87-Deluxe/Dual.

Sabertooth BIOS update information from Asus’ website:
Version 2302
2017/04/07 5.32 MBytes
SABERTOOTH Z87 BIOS 2302
1. Modify ASUS SPD information for XMP profile
2. Improved the verification of GPT partition.
3. Removed the card-reader item in popup menu.
4. Support TPM-L R2.0 .
5. Fixed legacy boot fail.

Version 2103
2014/09/12 12.39 MBytes
SABERTOOTH Z87 BIOS 2103 and BIOS updater
1.Fixed 4T HDD not detect in IDE mode.
2.Optimize overclocking function

Last Z87-Deluxe/Quad Update Information from Asus’ Website:
Version 2103
2014/09/12 12.41 MBytes
Z87-DELUXE/QUAD BIOS 2103 and BIOS updater
1.Fixed 4T HDD not detect in IDE mode.
2.Optimize overclocking function

(as you can see the last BIOS for the Z87-Deluxe was the same version and date as the second to last for the Sabertooth)

if only ASUS had made a last BIOS for the Z87-Deluxe series as well…

I checked using Infineon’s firmware update utility that indeed it can “see” my TPM R2.0 module and says its firmware is 5.63.3353.0, which is
newer than any update I found for it anyway.

A fresh look at the differences between Sabertooth-Z87-ASUS-2103 (TPM 1.2) and Sabertooth-Z87-ASUS-2302 (TPM 2.0)

(using MMTOOL reports, and using Notepad++ x64 and the Compare plugin therein…):

that’s all folks…

Status update: So, I took my unmodded BIOS (Z87DQ.CAP), updated the microcodes, and then inserted or replaced the TPM functions (the 30 GUID I originally identified, and using MMTOOL only).

The result? well, I know its using my modded BIOS, as the microcodes are indeed updated, however, TPM appears to be completely unchanged.

Of course when it inserted the new ones, MMTOOL inserts them at the end of the volumes, which is unlike the comparison SABERTOOTH bios that I analyzed in order to see what had been added.

the good news is I didn’t brick anything LOL…

Perhaps someone has an idea to point me in the right direction?

the 30 changes I exported from SABERTOOTH:

30 File(s) 162,454 bytes

the leading numbers of the filename I just used to remember what order they were in, and what volumes they belonged to (0400 is volume 4 1st entry and so on)…
of course when replacing, I picked where they were to go. When inserting it always inserted at the end of the volume in question.

----- Free space *** Lesser by 9 bytes due to the above ($01E2E1 or #123617 VS $01E2D8 or #123608)

(Still plugging away at it…)

AMIBCP Findings ST2302 vs ST2103:

Setup Configuration
===================
→ Main->Security unchanged
Main->_ Handle numbers differ almost immediately.

This Part is more or less the same (handle differences aside)
Handle2103|Handle2302|Control Group Structures|Show|Access/Use|Failsafe|Optimal:
(0284)|(0284)|TPM State|Yes|Default|Disabled|Disabled
(0285)|(0285)|TCM State|Yes|Default|Disabled|Disabled
(0293)|(0291)|Pending operation|Yes|Default|None|None
(0293)|(0291)|Pending operation|Yes|Default|None|None
(0297)|(0296)|TPM Enabled Status:|Yes|Default|Disabled|Disabled
(0298)|(0297)|TCM Enabled Status:|Yes|Default|Disabled|Disabled
(0299)|(0298)|TPM Active Status:|Yes|Default|Deactivated|Deactivated
(029A)|(0299)|TCM Active Status:|Yes|Default|Deactivated|Deactivated
(02A0)|(029F)TPM Owner Status:|Yes|Default|Unowned|Unowned
(02A1)|(02A0)|TCM Owner Status:|Yes|Default|Unowned|Unowned

Now it differs. Six new groups in 2302 over 2103:
(N/A)|(02AF)|Platform Hierarchy|Yes|Default|Enabled|Enabled
(N/A)|(02B1)|Storage Hierarchy|Yes|Default|Enabled|Enabled
(N/A)|(02B3)|Endorsement Hierarchy|Yes|Default|Enabled|Enabled

(N/A)|(02B5)|TPM 20 InterfaceType|Yes|Default|CRB|CRB
(N/A)|(02B9)|Device Select|Yes|Default|Auto|Auto
(02DC)|(02EF)|Hyper-threading|Yes|Default|Enabled|Enabled

->Advanced
2302 has an extra group entry over 2103, and handles are different for some again:

(022E)|(022E)|Advanced|Yes|Default
(0FC6)|(0FD9)|Pci Subsystem Settings|Yes|Default
(026E)|(026E)|ACPI Settings|Yes|Default
(0282)|(0282)|Trusted Computing|Yes|Default
(N/A)|(0282)|Trusted Computing|Yes|Default

Yup, Trusted Computing repeats in 2302, but appears once in 2103. No Failsafe or Optimal for any of them.

two more instances of extra entries in 2302:
->Advanced->Trusted Computing

(0285)|(0285)|TCM State|Yes|Default|Disabled|Disabled
(0293)|(0291)|Pending operation|Yes|Default|None|None
(N/A)|(02B9)|Device Select|Yes|Default|Auto|Auto

So, 2302 has device select but 2103 does not.

Now, for the second instance of Trusted Computing in 2302. The underscore serves to show where nothing appears.
->Advanced->Trusted Computing (second instance)

so, 2302 has 19 ($13) extra (or changed) strings. This bumps the subsequent tokens by the same amount from there on.

oddly, in all 3 BIOS, I saw 4 strings that contain "Ocerride". Perhaps they meant "Override".
In the decompiled setups, Ocerride appears to be referenced 32 times.

Hi. I think you’re doing an excellent job! And that’s what I wanted to know: how to merge the TPM 2.0 extensions from SABERTOOTH Z87’s .CAP file into the Gryphon’s one (being both with the Z87 chipset). Here’s a thread/topic I created yesterday (https part missing):

win-raid.com/t9403f54-TPM-support-for-ASUS-Gryphon-Z.html

Hope you succeed and let me know so I can replicate your job in my situation.

Mario.

Agreed, Reed continues to put effort into the Deluxe/Dual and Deluxe/Quad, and I appreciate the effort

Status update: Initial calculations and adjustments made to script. Net difference in strings is 11 (some strings are exclusively ST and some are exclusive to ZQ. Also some were eliminated). Next, I have to adjust the CMOS default settings, since (like between ST2103 and ST2302) it has grown by 9 bytes.

right now I am doing a recheck to make sure things look right, then I’ll begin the manual rebuild. Its taking a while, but should be worth it.

As always, appreciate the effort man.

I think it’s worth that.

@Reed_Righthead
It would definitely be worth it,
If you need any help for testing, let me know

I’m still working on getting TPM 2 working on the ASUS Z87 Deluxe Quad (and dual), however, the latest Microsoft PC health checkup app indicates that now that is not the only limitation to be faced. Now it says that both the TPM and CPU are problems. For the socket, you can’t get anything newer than 4th gen. Mine is 4771. Everything else is good to go it says.

Hi!

CPU will be the hard limit now. I hope it goes away since there is the slowness issue on AMD CPUs. MS is under pressure right now. Since Windows 11 launched already, these limits should have been enforced and yet Windows 11 works with no TPM and a Quad Core. Hope you nail the BIOS issue. I bought this one for my Z87-DELUXE/QUAD (Latest official BIOS): SuperMicro AOM-TPM-9665V-C (Vertical) Client TPM with Infineon 9665 (amazon dot ae/gp/product/B01G5AU7JM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00)

I see no change in my BIOS with this installed and Windows tmp.msc reports no TPM.

Hello all

@hancor
Maybe you can help moding this issue ? :slight_smile:
