[Guide] CoffeeLake CPUs on Skylake and KabyLake mainboards

@hongthaihp95
First thing you have to do is to unlock all regions to read/write in spi on your mainboard. Do backup of spi via programmer, unlock regions of this backup in CoffeTime and flash that image with programmer. Since that moment you can flash any image via FPT. Of course remember to flash images with unlocked regions only.

hi all, can someone with more experience guide me to not to brick the motherboarad?

I have an asus z170i pro gamng itx board with an i5-7600k. / 3085 bios

and want to upgrade with a i5-9600k

so the steps are

1. use coffetime to make bios
downgrade to 3610 bios and SRELU stepping
2. extract bios chip from board
3. save original bios file
4. put modified bios on chip
5 hardware modification on cpu

i have the Ch341a programmer and chip extractor

and thats all?

thanks in advance

@WannaBeOCer
Stay on 2202 to get all 16 threads working.

@hongthaihp95
BIOS internal flashing tools can’t redlash image fully.
You need to use SPI programmer to made it.
Also, check your current ME version and CPU 8100 revision.

@kixezi
You have other PC to flash chip, right?
1) Backup current bios, using SPI programmer.
2) Modify latest bios from site with CoffeeTime.
3) Transfer personal data from backup image to modbios (MAC, UUID, SN).
4) Flash modbios using SPI programmer.
5) Make pinmod for CPU
6) Profit.

What is ASUS 12T blockers under Extra? I thought that allowed 3xxx bioses to support >8t?

by opening your backup in coffeetime (transfer button)

chnged personal data
use ch341a programming
pc not booting not even fan spinning

does it work without personal data?

no power at all is bad skt_occ pinmod. power on and immediately off is bad ME

thats it, pencil graphite fixed it

now windows boot flawlesly, from nvme !!!

however I cannot enter bios, should I reset bios or is something i did wrong?

using 1 nvme disk , 1 ram stick , 1 monitor hdmi from igpu

from egpu I can enter bios normaly thankyou

this bios need a change?

@WannaBeOCer Can you elaborate what the bugs are in the 2202 bios? I am also running a M8F but with a i5-8600k and thinking of upgrading perhaps to i9-9900k but slightly concerned that latest bios build cannot be used in such a scenario. So would be interested to know what the limitations are and any other info you might have that may help to make an informed decision.
Also hopeful that Coffeetime will at some point be able to support 16T on latest bios builds - fingers crossed.

@mtothaj The bugs I’m referring to are old bios bugs that Asus fixed with newer bios releases. How secure boot is handled, memory stability along with a common bug with overclocking above 5251Mhz. It’s a known Asus bug with this bios that running at 5251Mhz+ causes the board to set 1.6v to these three voltages and setting them to 1V solves this issue.

PLL Termination Voltage
PCH Core Voltage
CPU Standby Voltage

@WannaBeOCer
So overall it doesn’t sound like a big deal. One thing I am concerned about is that I am using a Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD and in the the later bios builds it says from ver. 3703 "Fixed SAMSUNG M.2 device issue."
Just out of interest do you think you could run Userbenchmark and post a link to your result with the M8F and i9-9900k?

@mtothaj That could be an issue, I’m using the EX950 but I don’t see any issues listed on the bios releases. I also want to point out to not use the m.2 slot on this board since there isn’t a heatsink. Just use the very bottom PCIe slot with a m.2 to PCIe heatsink.

Here’s my Userbenchmark result: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/34943738

@WannaBeOCer
Many thanks, those are stellar results.
In comparison, my Userbenchmark result: https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/34944053

As for m.2 drive I also do not use the stock m.2 slot as the drive got much too hot - same as you I use the bottom x4 slot (set in the bios to be x4 rather than stock x2) and I use an nvme PCIe x4 adapter board with heatsinks and thermal pads - this reduced temperatures of my SSD by c.a. 20 degrees C vs just putting it into the m.2 slot.

@WannaBeOCer
Just looking at your result it appears that you are running the bottom PCIe x4 slot at just x2 (default preset, if x4 some Sata ports go offline). If so, go to the bios and change to x4 and run benchmark again- you will get much higher SSD results.

@mtothaj Thanks for the reminder, I forgot to change it back after I re-programmed my bios chip with the 128GB ram bios I created the other day. Just changed it back to x4.

@WannaBeOCer
What I will do tomorrow is to program the 2202 bios and try running with my i5-8600k and Samsung 970 evo plus 1tb. If it will run fine then there is no problem in getting the 9900k - at least that is my reasoning.
