Try ths HDA Audio driver. This is a third party HDA driver for Windows 3.1. Apparently, installing it on Windows 98 w/ DirectX 9 has it function better than an actual 3.1 machine. I did not have much luck with a Thinkpad R60, but maybe you can give it a try.
