[How to] Install Win98 onto a ThinkPad T43

Hi,
a little bit off topic,
but has anybody here in the forum has been able to install Win98SE with all drivers on a IBM ThinkPad T43 laptop with discrete graphic card x300?
If yes, I think this would be the only notebook,
where everything works from win98 to Win10^^
Dietmar

Hi,
hard job to install Win98SE with all needed drivers on the ThinkPad T43.
But now I have them all: Lan, sound, USB2, grafikdriver which works only after an *.inf modifikation for the Radeon mobility x300
Dietmar

PS: I miss only a good browser^^…

Either that or Opera 10.70 build 3488 for vanilla 98 (w/o KernelEx)
https://retrosystemsrevival.blogspot.com…windows-95.html
here’s a nice compendium of browser and the old OS compatibility:
https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=12102

@IntiMD …I am running Opera 9 for certain functions on W7 but it does not work well on many sites. For some reason, none of my browsers will run well on XP with the 300-series chipset. Sadly, Internet Explorer 8 is the only one that function half decently. I’m wondering if it has something to do with the lack of a network driver. There is also the possibility that I messed something up in the registry. I had to convert all references to the D:\ drive, where I had XP installed, to C:. I don’t want to do a fresh install because I have so many old apps loaded on XP and reloading them would be a nightmare. Looking at a repair install but that leads to other issues, like getting all the updates re-loaded.

@diderius6… Dietmar…are you aware of the work done by the late R. Loew with win98? Google ‘r.loew windows 98’ and see what comes up. If you can’t find anything I can get a Wayback Machine link for you.

Just found it:

@dencorso

I tried a lot of browsers for Win98 SE.
The best one is the one you told about, Retozilla.
It is fast and shows every website.
But on youtube it cant show videos, I think because of HTML5.
But for daily use just just looking news,
Retozilla can be used in 2020:))

Since the discussion about Win98 belongs to the Sub-Forum “DOS/Windows 3.X/9X/ME - Retro Gaming”, I have moved the related posts from >this< thread into a sepatate new thread of the matching Sub-Forum.
I hope, that this is ok for you.

Related 98SE questions by Ruthan will be addressed later due to lack of time at this new thread.

Windows 98SE on Modern Hardware

@diderius6

Not that specific laptop. Since that Laptop contains a Pentium-M it should work with 98SE. I performed the same with a VAIO laptop with Pentium-M and got DOS, 98SE, 2000, XP, Window Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 Beta all working on it. Never did Windows 10 as it was at the time of Windows 8 Beta was the newest and Windows 9 was still a possible version #.

What is the ATI Mobility Radeon X300 Benchmark performance in 3DMark?
Do any 98SE games work with it properly?
Try Quake 3 Demo should be a good test.
https://www.fileplanet.com/archive/p-16222/Quake3-Arena-Demo

Browser support try Opera v10 should work. Not sure about modern websites if they will error.

But this website should work with it using a very dated html code.

@XPLives

The 3Dmark 2001 for the x300 card was about 7000.
Interesting, the absolut highest values you get always with XP SP3,
here about 7600
Dietmar

PS: The Radeon Mobility 9600 from the T42 is better, it gives about 11000 points there.
I tested Settlers II and Quake 2 under win98SE. They run with full sound, nice!!!

@diderius6

Can you attach all Video, Sound, Lan drivers you used to first post?
[How to] Install Win98 onto a ThinkPad T43

Maybe more people will be interested in ThinkPad for 98!

I liked the older ThinkPad with the serial, parallel, and floppy drive.

Which 3DMark version are you using?
2001 or 2003?

Try 3DMark 2003 and install DX9.0c and retest and see if scores might increase.

I think we can try to boost it if you can find a ThinkPad with this GPU.
Mobility Radeon 9800

It has 5 times the bandwidth of the X300. I wonder how much better the score would be?

With the patched Nvidia driver for Win98,
nearly all graphik cards seem to run under win98 even Nvidia 9800 cards, see

I am going to test Win98SE with Nvidia notebook card Geforce GO 7900 GS
on my Toshiba Satego P100-490
and I will show pic from 3dMark2001
Dietmar

Yesssssa, I got it.
Now, the graphik card Geforce go 7900 GS works under win98se.
13 years ago I tried a lot but have had no success with this. Seems, like I get a little bit better^^.
First I have to install Internet Browser ie6 and then Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 for win98.
And voila here it is, full win98se on the Toshiba Satego P100-490,
now also a notebook with everything from Win98 to win10
Dietmar

EDIT: All works but no sound. I need driver for Win98SE Conexant VEN_14F1&DEV_5045
it is the chip CX20549 .
Even I looked everywhere, it seems, that there is no driver for win98 for this sound card.
Hm, what can be done to have sound with this notebook? There are USB sound cards and also pcmcia sound cards,
but they will work only with external speakers.

Today I bought a VIGO speedlink SL-8850-BK-01
USB sound card for about 16 Euro. This one works from win98 to win10 without any extra drivers, only asks for Win98 CD, under XP asks nothing, just works.

Now I have great sound in Settlers II:)) running under Win98SE, background (Midi) and sound of birds and workers (Digital).

Settings for the soundcard in Settlers II is

Midi music: Roland MT-32 Midi with MPU-401
Digital music: Creative Soundblaster Pro or 100% compatible

what a nice day
Dietmar

so this works for DOS games too?

@infuscomus

You need to have a connection via USB, then this soundcard works great.
Settlers 2 is a DOS game.
In next days I try a PCMCIA soundcard also.
They are not easy to get today
Dietmar

EDIT: It is the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Notebook PCMCIA card,
which has drivers for Win98SE and I think also for pur Dos.

@diderius6

This is Nice!

7900 GS working?

Can you try 98 First Edition no other updates, no IE6.0 and no .NET v1.1 Framework installed.

Want to see if 98FE clean can see 7900GS working.

If 98FE working try 95B after.

This is integrated laptop graphics?

Sound card for laptop best to use USB sound card. Less headache. Use PCMCIA slot and try to find USB 2.0 card for 2-4 USB ports instead. Then can hook up external USB keyboard, USB mouse and maybe one flash drive.

@diderius6

I think the PCMCIA model only has XP drivers. I don’t think it has 98SE or DOS drivers.

The PCI sound card model does have 98SE drivers. DOS drivers may work but not on newer chipsets.

You do not need an expensive USB sound device for 98SE. Look for the $1 models from China they will work.

Hi,
I just get an T60 thinkpad with 4 Gbyte ram and an x1400 Ati Radeon mobility grafikcard.
The cpu is Intel Core 2 Duo (Merom) 2 MB L2-Cache T5600 with 1,83 GHz.
After first using the R.Loew patch I can use 3 Gbyte (!) of ram in win98se.
Now I try to install really every driver, interesting if the x1400 will work.
For this I add
"ATI Mobility Radeon X1400" = ati2mtag_M54, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_7145
to its *.inf file
Dietmar

@XPLives
You are right: The pcmcia versionof the pcmcia sound blaster audigy 2 zs notebook does not work under win98, crazy because the pci version does. I tried everything without success. But this card gives really great sound under XP Sp3.
Now I try an Indigo pcmcia card for win98:))…

EDIT: Result for T60 under win98se: No sound, no lan, no ati x1400, brrr…
So, from the Thinkpad series the T43 (only with Ati graphikcard(!)) is really the last compi with win98se support for everything.
