Lenovo E530 <> MEManuf: Error 9328 & Error 9296

Hello all, hello plutomaniac,

I have read your profound but therefore complicated guides (esp. Intel Management Engine: Drivers, Firmware & System Tools). As I am only someone who flashed a lot of BIOS/Firmware chips (98% with automated setups), I don’t have that much background to understand every bit of your guides. Mea culpa!

My aim is to update the ME of my Lenovo E530 in order to fix INTEL-SA-00086 vulnerabilities. Unfortunately Lenovo just offers a separate fix for INTEL-SA-00075 vulnerabilities (which I have already implemented).

Starting Point & technical infos:
- ME v8.1.71.3608
- 5MB/corporate edition
- 7-series chipset
- BIOS/UEFI version: 2.59 (latest; with Spectre/Meltdown fix)

In order to check ME details and its status I used the suggested tools:

- I analysed the latest BIOS update (2.59); there are to .FL* files (--> Dual BIOS?):
--> allthough the BIOS update is from April 2018, Lenovo implemented the very old ME release v8.1.0.1265

My question: do I have to fix these errors in order to do a safe ME upgrade from v8.1.71.3608 to v8.1.72.3002 ? Does anybody know the reason for these error Messages?

First of all you’ve clearly understood/done a lot more than most other users who ask for help so don’t apologize at all, in fact: great work so far. Now, run MEInfo -verbose and MEManuf -verbose to see what the actual errors are. Lenovo and HP are the best when it comes to Engine firmware updates so it would be strange if Lenovo hasn’t released a ME 8.1.72.3002 5MB update for your model. Not that you cannot update manually of course. It is ok for their SPI/BIOS images to not have the latest ME firmware baked-in since they provide external updating tools.

No, Lenovo hasn't released a newer version than . You can have a look on your own on Lenovos Support page (--> category "Chipset"):

According to a Lenovo forum thread this is due to end of Support for E530 generation.... :

That was the 2nd possible cause so it’s the 1st. Either way, it doesn’t matter. The ME firmware is healthy so you can ignore that failed test.


It was a double negative statement, thus positive. Yes of course you can use FWUpdate tool. You’ve verified that your current ME firmware is healthy and you have the latest BIOS applied so go ahead.

Ah ok - I missunderstood that.

I flashed the ME with command FWUpdLcl64.exe -f c:\8.1.72.3002_5MB_PRD_RGN.bin and it looks good!
Btw: It would be great (for others) if you could add this/these flash commands in your guide to make it easier…
