I bought a SSD NVME SN850X with heatsink because after some searches, it should works on my motherboard but it doesn’t. I searched all the internet and in my BIOS but nothing got successful. Maybe because of my general but not precise knowledge of computers.
I want to use the SN850X as data storage but if the solution is to put windows on it, I’m okay with that (but I didn’t find it when I tried to install a new windows 10 Pro).
I never used M.2 SSD before. There is a led on the SSD but it doesn’t switch on, never. An IT repair shop tested it and told me that there is no problem with it.
Should be in BIOS an option about M2 drives ? I found nothing. I also changed BIOS version multiple times but without success.
After so much researches, I’m thinking that maybe I have to do some hard work on the bios by myself. Am I right ?
My computer is composed of :
MSI X99A RAIDER
INTEL CPU I7-5820K
GSKILL DDR4 16GB (4*4) F4-2666C15Q-16GRR
MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G before and now a Gigabyte 7800XT 16Go
WD WD1003FZEX 1T BLACK (Data)
CRUCIAL SSD BX100 250GB SATA2.5” 7MM-CT250BX100SSD1 (Windows 10 Pro)
MSI ATX 1000W - 80+ Gold FM - MPG A1000G PCIE5
Welcome to the forum
The X99A Raider is compatible with M.2 SATA/AHCI and PCIe NVME disks
Usually there is no issues when using PCIe4.0 disks on older motherboards
**
WD_BLACK SN850X is backwards-compatible with PCIe Gen3
**
On modern OS, any NVMe disk is seen as storage device disk, an OS installation is optional.
So the disk could not be properly seated or the M.2 slot has an issue.
Last resource contact MSI for bios compatibility inquire, i doubt that WD will provide support.
Good luck.
I thought the same of you about everything you mentionned.
When I plug it, the SSD is not staying at 30° but fall because of his weight. But I don’t why I couldn’t pluged it correctly because I tried several times and It seems that like I saw on internet, I just have to insert it into the M.2 port.
I tried the MSI forum but a moderator just told me that I have to set my Bios in UEFi… No replies after that…
Yesterday I installed a windows in UEFI on a GPT drive, because I’m lacking of idea right now, but it didn’t work.
I opened a ticket today on MSI support for my issue and the answer is that the SN 850X is not listed on the compatibility list here : MSI France | MSI France
But, is the list really updated ?
Meanwhile, I tried the WD support by phone and the guy told me, in short, that he can’t do more than what I did. But I at least know now that I have more 14 days to return the drive and be refound or I can be have another “brand” disk from WD as replacement (a good little news )
He told me too that a Mobo could not see my SN 850X for exemple but see another “brand” name drive in PCIe gen4*4. So, should I tried with another NVME with my mobo or it will sure that I will face the same issue ?
Then the disk is not correctly inserted into the slot. (The disk contacts from his PCB not pushed in, into the M.2 slot aperture)
You can fail this, because otherwise the disk will not align with the stand-off screw.
The disk cannot fall on his weight, it will stay lift until you bring him down to the stand-off, not forcing of course.
So I rechecked how I pluged the SSD but same as before, falling because of its weight.
But… after a week and at 100th tentative, I kind of followed the ssd with my hand so the ssd stayed in contact with the M.2, as I had already tried,… and… I don’t know a miracle happened !!! I have got the Led blinking in orange now !!!
I’m so excited right now !!! It’s so much hope for me !!! Lmao
Expand the “Storage Controllers” section of the Device Manager, right-click onto the listed NVMe Controller and choose the options “Properties” > “Driver”.
As i said before, there’s no need for a specific driver for modern OS, as boot drive or storage device.
Not all manufactures have a driver for NVMe disk controllers, WD has one but ONLY for specific models, there’s no specific one for the SN850X.
The OS will display the current driver as Fernando, just described.
The procedures for OS Boot installation on a NVMe disk, you already found it. (x64 OS ISO, GPT, bios as UEFI (CSM Off).
I was not mentionning a specific driver MeatWar. I was just wondering what Windows shows in device manager for NVMe by itself.
All went good when I replied before until now. A restart of the computer did nothing bad and I did a copy to it (a file of 100 Go), I saw Windows driver in device manager, I saw it in drive manager and file explorer and in the WD app, I updated the firmware, but I had to shut down the computer for being afk and here I am again with a non responsive NVMe.
Is really a connection issue ? I’m moving it when it is on and off but nothing happen.
I saw someone on internet test with safe mod booting.
I tried it. The SSD revived. But I had a black screen. After resetting, the SSD was still online in windows.
I shut down the computer again and then no SSD living, even with the safe mode try.
Sir… give me a break… your saying that you’re tilting the disk with the motherboard powered on…???
Soon youll get a dead SN850X or its already offended and the slot M.2 on the old X99 is damage or soon to be.
You know whats the issue now…motherboard to disk connection on slot, no more miracles here from a forum, spray it, blow it, clean it, burn it, trash it, whatever you feel like.
Sorry but im out of here…sry no time for such irresponsible actions and users.
