[Need Help] Bricked Dell G3 3779 BIOS A13

Dell G3 3779, BIOS ver 13, NO POST with 2-4 Memory config error.

Hello all! I did some stupid thing with NVRAM variables and bricked laptop with wrong training\DRAM init config on Dell G3 3779 laptop.

CMOS\RTC memory clear(press Power 30-35 sec) gives 3 tries of memory inits and shows NO POST with 2-4 power LED blinking, correspond to memory errors, that’s the true reason. I messed with NVRAM variables to OC DRAM, everything was OK, got 3600LCL22 with BW Read 50GB/s, 49-50ns latency in AIDA. UNTIL I did 0x90A = 0x0, 0x10B5 = 0x0 turning Fast Boot OFF on OCed Memory (from 2666CL19 to 3600CL21 and SA offest set +200mV)

SO-DIMMs are OK, checked working on other laptop. All previous my errors in DRAM config\timings were easy cleared by RTC\CMOS reset, when BIOS loaded default factory config. But that WAS NOT, looks like I need NVRAM Clear method of BIOS Recovery From USB. But laptop cant enter this mode, when ESC+CTRL pressed > AC connected it also can’t init DRAM with NO POST 2-4 Power LED blinking.

I tried:

1, main BAT disconnected + CMOS BAT removed, Power button pressed 10-15 sec to discharge MB.

  1. ESC+CTRL pressed > AC connected > ESC+CTRL release > 3 attempts Init DRAM and NO POST 2-4 blinking

  2. DEL button pressed > AC connected > DEL release = Power Led off and no reaction

  3. only 1 DIMM in A\B slot > ESC+CTRL pressed > AC connected > ESC+CTRL release > 3 attempts Init DRAM and NO POST 2-4 blinking

  4. NO DIMM > NO POST, Power led 2-3, NO MEMORY ERROR.

Now I have two dumps of main IC ROM W25Q128JVSQ.

  1. dump done before OCing RAM with Intel fptw64.exe

I checked ROM dumps in UEFITool both parsed OK, but pretty different in BIOS and ME volumes data. So I dont know what to do, and how to CLEAR NVRAM in β€œbricked” from CH341A or just try to write Intel’s β€œfptw64.exe dump” unchanged, both looks like have Bios GUARD enabled. Is it possible to somehow edit them in HEX editor and what i need to do next with it to Rescue laptop \ Repair BIOS?

Edit by Fernando: Thread title shortened and customized

sorry, new users can’t attach dump files, so uploaded on other site. ^(

ufile.io doesn’t work for me.

and which one will work? OK, try attached to this message files. If short, now I need advice, what to do next with 2 dump files, write β€œfptw64_dump” by external programmer unchanged or somehow change the β€œch341a dump” from already bricked(replace something in UEFItool or HEX editor? ). They have many diffs in UEFItool reports in CRC, but looks the same in layout - base address\size

sorry for the mess with filenames, I have only 2 uniq files, names are diff b’coze many readings with different prog. soft to check reading flashROM IC for Win10\linux.

Congratulations for a valid backup!!

I would just restore the file before the overclocking as a first try.

The problem might not be NVRAM or not NVRAM only if referring to the dedicated NVRAM volumes, but Dell often uses a DVAR region in padding or here padding in a placeholder(?) EFI volume.

DVAR was earlier the place to keep machine specific information, now it seems it’s either mostly encrypted and / or in addition it keeps settings, too. Machine specific information might now be stored in TPM for example. DVAR has 2 DVAR regions which are almost identical 0x811000 and 0x819000- keeping the latest version before changes?

Congratulations for a valid backup!!

you saying that 1st one from Intel FPT is valid, and OK for writing unchanged by CH341A programmer software? Any other advice for writing? As I understand if it reads OK, it not always Writes successfully.

Don’t know about two DVARs in dump-files, but NVRAM variables had LastKnownGood profile and CustomUserProfile in BIOS restore menu. Previously, when I used to do RTC\CMOS clear method always used CustomUserProfile to restore Setup settings because LastKnownGood could be β€œbad” enough to not POST or load OS.

Is any software from Inte\Dell\AMI that can check dumpfile for Bios\BootGuard I don’t want to have permanently locked EC\PCH after booting with wrong image.

FPT is normally the safest mode to dump. Writing can be problematic due to bad contact. After writing read the spi chip in a separate process, save the freshly read content with a different name, compare to original file. Original file and re-read content after flash should be a 100% identical.

Dell is normally quite accurate with bios security, I don’t expect them not to have closed manufacturing mode and with that the Boot Guard Profile gets burned into an FPF an can’t be changed.

No knowledge about Dell bios restore menus.

Ok, I will try to Write backup file unchanged. I saw recommendation to use some Colibri\Win10 software and Linux\Flashrom witch on is better to use?

Check the forum for flash type and corresponding flashing problems…

Zero problem with Write flashROM. Script = Erase\Verify\Write\Verify in Colibri worked well and fast. Later did Read in other software and checked result files with dumpfile. Installed one 8GB SO-DIMM in slot A, installed back CMOS\RTC BATT, connected back Main BATT. Assembled back cover. Connected AC power from PSU. Power LED did several attempts to init DRAM(it’s OK) and successfully POSTed to Dell logo, after I pressed F2 to Setup. Now need to dissemble\assemble my current working HP ProBook with SSD and other stuff to boot OS…

Thank you, for your boosting morale to Write IC and advice to just use backup file!

Thanks for the feedback, good to hear that it worked out :+1:

First time in POSTed with DDR4-2666 and some default profile, but then I just restore CustomUserSettings profile and it POSTed with DDR4-3600CL21. Looks like I did dump with already OCed RAM only without some last time changes in MemoryConfig NVAR that bricked it. Good to know, that not need to ASW all numerous custom variables, including Current Slope(to change current reading to offset PL1 limit for EC FW)\Core\Cache\SA Voltage Offsets\DRAM timings… etc.

Why all that headache?!
best

looks like FULL RECOVERY, NOTHING LOST!
Some Win10 warnings on first start, but next one already OK.
Thanx to All, this case closed. Now will make backups with FPT before any changes in NVRAM vars. Need to remember, that RTC memory\CMOS Clear don’t give always DRAM config recovery on Dell laptops!
