I did manage to get the combination tested - prevented booting (did not prevent it in my PC); SD was found to be the problem; a new SSD was detected without fuss; I expect to get a refund for the faulty one, but that remains to be seen.

Again thanks for the update! Is the new SSD a different type so that this might be an incompatibility or was the old SSD just defect?
The new is different. If I get a refund, the old one was defective.
