I did try before and now again. I’ve inserted the SD card in, plugged in server, started the server. After half an hour nothing.
As mentioned in the official iDRAC recovery procedure (https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-dm…with-firmimg-d7), the blue LED on the back of the server should blink, which means that the bootloader is pooling for an SD card. Since I’ve mentioned before that the LED on the back of my server stays off all the time, it is safe to assume that that is the reason why the SD card recovery does not work.
So… Is there anything else I could try besides chip replacement?
Having serial console output during the attempt to flash might tell us something.
The "blinking" light is done by the firmware, so the status only applies if the firmware that does the blinking is infact working as Dell expects it to. Once you get into a crashed iDrac situation all bets are off on what the blinking light, or lack of, is indicating and only a serial console log can really tell you what is going on.
Get us a fresh set of serial logs, both with and without a recovery SD card. Be sure to start from COLD powered off state, ie, do NOT simply use the power button, you must remove AC power from the unit, push and hold the power on button for 10 seconds or so to cause it to try a startup and drain all remaing power, connect serial console, then plug the AC power in. The iDrac WELL start to boot, you do not need to turn the machine on.

i ave the same problem as 2ndbedtime with R720xd, i think the ground can be, that someone flashed idrac8 firmware 2.63.63 before i got the server, then i did automatic upgrade via idrac (from downloads.dell.com) and idrac was bricked after upgrade…

TL:DR: can anyone help me regarding what appears to be a zero capacity EMMC device?
Hi all, I’ve spent the last 40 hours (with a few hours sleep) reading all of the forum posts and trying out pretty much everything from my screwed iDRAC R720.
I had a similar issue to many, running firmware 1.20.20 and attempted a firmware update from Windows which corrupted the firmware.
After the initial firmware corruption I had:
- No flashing amber light on the rear (no light at all)
- No network on iDRAC port
- No display on the front
- Fans were running at full speed
- iDRAC Settings error on boot on VGA output of: “SWC0700: iDRAC is not ready. The configuration values cannot be accessed” press F1.
- Additional error on boot on VGA output: "IDRAC initialisation error. Continuing to boot may yield unexpected power loss due to unknown power inventory and various features lost such as remote access, active power management, thermal management, inventory, LCD, or system error reporting."management engine mode: Active"
After lots of faffing around, I managed to get a fairly robust serial communication working with FTDI RS232 3.3V USB to serial adapter connected to the J_IDRAC_UART connector (as described by doomguy #msg80465
However I just can’t get things to work. After mucking around in the recovery interface and inadvertently programming the SPI to boot from SD card (“set bootcmd ‘sd_boot’”) which appears to try to create the partitions meant for the MMC on the SD card upon boot (ref #msg81378) I managed to set the SPI addressees SPI flash at 0x100000 and SPI flash at 0x110000 back to what I believe is meant to be correct (“fwu mmc emmc”) which see on line 12 of [#msg134425]rgrimes’s post.
I’ve managed to get the point now where I’m getting the “Polling for SD card state change” but it just won’t accept any firmware (firmware 1.20.20 or 2.65.65.65).
I’m led to believe my MMC memory is okay as it reports back healthy from the developer console, except the capacity is zero, but I’m not sure if this is more of an issue with the volumes that currently set up on the card:

@yaap42 What you did was a NO-OP, there are 2 copies of U-boot, and you back flashed the one in spi-nor to 1.2.26, which when it started up noted that there was a newer uboot in emmc and immediatly loaded that, and then should of proceded to flash both copies to 1.1.34. To roll back uboot you need to replace BOTH copies at the same time, or it does this.

i understand, but how to replace the second u-boot in emmc? maybe desolder the original emmc and replace it with empty one? then maybe u-boot allows to recover idrac from sdcard and firmimg.d7?

Crap, looks like i’ve screwed the iDRAC SPI u-boot. I’m getting no data out of the UART, I’m thinking I’ve mucked up the SPI contents somehow!!!
Anyone have the SPI chip dump, as flashing it may be the only option!

@yaap42 Perhaps less drastic would be to cause the EMMC to “not read correctly during early boot” IIRC there is a set of debug pads that are in parallel with the EMMC, probably taking one of the data lines through a sufficiently strong pull up or down resistor would cause a “read error” and the SPI u-boot would not find the second copy. Oh, wait a minute, aren’t both copies of u-boot in the SPI-NOR? Its been too long since I went over the layout of things. Ah, crud, https://github.com/Fohdeesha/idrac-7-8-r…r/Flash-Map.txt tells me there are 2 copies in SPI-NOR and 2 copies in EMMC, so you would need to update both in SPI-NOR and disable EMMC.
Hi all, so I’ve completely removed my emmc memory chip, after inadvertently shorting the power and ground pins during replacement with a new chip. Luckily no damage was caused.
I have an spi programmer and have reloaded the firmware after inadvertently clearing it.
My question is has anyone managed to successfully boot from tftp or SD card? I’ve read through pretty much every post in the forum on this subject, and have tried almost everything. I’m not sure exactly what I’m missing.
It does seem like a lot of people gave up and don’t come back to explain whether there solution worked in the end.
@genestealer I have been trying to figure out if anyone really has either tftp booted or SD card booted, and can anyone actually duplicate the claim. So far the answer is NO. I some stuff claiming that it can be done, but when I try to duplicate it the described procedure fails. So my conclusion is that some critical piece of data in how to get this to work is missing, and infact I also believe
that people are damaging systems trying to follow these flawed procedures. I suspect the "not coming back" syndrome is cause they did NOT get to a solution and ended up either replacing the board, or scrapping the machine.
@rgrimes Oh dear, that’s what I feared but could not substantiate. I have been reading through the (non Dell) u-boot documentation, which details an explanation of the boot arguments stored within the spi chip, their are many additional commands and variables available, that I have not read of anyone else trying. I’m particularly interested in @ldv mentioning booting iDrac from RAM (after previously loading it manually via the UART serial port, TFTP or SD card or even changing the boot arguments in the spi chip to automatically do this upon each power cycal), although u-boot appears to support this, I think the Dell firmware image, once started, will immediately look for certain flags in the emmc, which if not found will cause it to go back into the SD recovery mode.
I haven’t yet dug into the iDRAC reverse engineering that someone’s done, but it certainly looks like it’s possible to modify the Dell firmware image itself so it won’t keep looking for the emmc. Actually seems to have figured out where the values need to be changed in their earlier post, detailing the values within the “./squashfs-root/etc/sysapps_script” image to edit the Dell firmware to boot from SD card rather than emmc, I’m still trying to go through their details steps as there seems to be some key bits of information missing or certain level of expertise and knowledge that I don’t have yet.

@geekonocito Your posted output does not show any repeated output so that it might be possible to identify what the cause of the loop is. Also you did not say if you had soldered the jumpers to enable "interrupt u-boot" (See other parts of this thread for details). As far as what you did show that looks like pretty normal u-boot initialization, right up to loading the env from flash, what have you done prior to this point in trouble shooting this machine, or are you just getting starting to work on it.
Sorry so currently that is all that repeats over and over after that bottom it loads the same thing nothing else outputs but i will verify to check again. Currently I did not solder the jumper to “interrupt uboot” just the post’s to be able to read the output of the device. I can try to pull more later on this evening. i thought it would output something else as i have seen others getting further but it just sticks here.

@geekonocito Ok, I see mmc read failed, FAIL: 11:406 Verify OS Images N: Cannot read rootfs block 32769, so my guess is there is an issue with the mmc chip, you need to solder the jumper to be able to interrupt u-boot, without doing that your not going to be able to "interrupt" the boot process.
Do you mean like an issue with the chip itself say "hardware issues" or something may be can be fixed. I know that working on this might give me more of an answer. This would be the second set of pads on the SW Idrac DBG correct
@geekonocito Yes, the chip itself probably has an issue, that is what this thread is pretty much about "failed mmc chips on idrac7" is more descriptive of what most the people here are experiencing. And yes again, the DBG pads need to be shorted so you can interrupt uboot and get a prompt. Have you tried the SD card recovery process?
