[Problem] Dell XPS 15 7590 – “TPM device could not be initialized”

well it cant post as of now because it triggers the auto recovery i dont know if there is a way around it or if im doing something wrong. any clues are welcome

@EVH try this: Transfer.it, i would suggest to try FDUnlocked first and see if the bios boots.

Dell produced what looks to be their last bios update for the Precision 5530 Feb 6 2025, and then they came out with an updated CPU microcode. That’s the excuse I needed to get my hands dirty. I’ve wanted to physically flash a laptop for a while, and preparing for it has forced me to read and get more educated. Like your XPS, FD is FPT write blocked, so I’m going to physically flash that WSON chip. I already got a perfect read using the WSON pogo adapter. My CMOS battery will be in next week.

okay thank you very much again  the FDunlocked firmware works, sadly my bios is still locked so no fptw flashing (error 167). when flashing the new “BiosXPSfix2_FDUnlock_UnsurpressTPM.bin” i still get the bios autorecovery screen :frowning: this time the charger does not do anything for the power inadequate status tho…. either way thanks again and if you maybe know a workaround for the auto recovery trigger let me know! in the meantime i will try to only flash your ME region without the FD being unlocked.

Hey, with my standard FD (write) lock, I can’t even dump my full bios (only the bios region). I get the same Error 167: Protected Range Registers are currently set by BIOS, preventing flash access error when I run FPTW64.exe -d backup.bin. What happens when you run that?

I found the Lost_N_BIOS remarks I was looking for:

Be VERY careful what you edit in this BIOS, I see at the BIOS side Intel Boot Guard profile #5 FVME is enabled…

Like my bios, when I ran yours through FIT, I got the “Boot Guard Profile Configuration” is set to “Boot Guard Profile 5 - FVME” warning.

I haven’t checked the unsurpressed locations affected by Koekieezz’ UEFI-Editor mod, but that could be at play.

I’m still surprised that you can’t FPT flash. His FD is showing all regions are unlocked.

probably a stupid question but what does Boot Guard profile 5 mean?
Later today i can check what FPT does when trying to dump the firmware but currently my laptop is bricked because i made some changes haha, and want to do something else for a little bit…

edit: having to hold a wson adapter with pogopins as still as possible for 5min gets quite tiring :joy:

I’m starting to lose the skill-set handle on this. If you read through that Lost_N_BIOS response, he’s indicating strict boot parameters, and warning about related, restricted bios modding.

But when I look at Koekieezz’ mods, they look to be pure bios section mods (conceivably do-able), so I’m not sure. There’s a lot to consider within that UEFI-Editor, including BIOS Recovery, PTT Security, TPM Security, and Firmware Update Configuration.

You can try to play along with the attached. I’ll try to follow if he presses forward. I’d steer clear of other bios changes.

Edit 1: Zip file change to include Koekieezz’ BiosXPSfix2_FDUnlock.bin files, not mine.

UEFI Editor.zip (868.0 KB)

thank you! but I am still getting no boot if i change something :frowning: it instantly triggers a bios corruption state. When playing around with FIT i did disable the spi TPM and enable the PTT but it wont show any settings in the bios and does not show up in windows. The error message did change from “cannot be initialized” to “not detected” so the FIT settings did go trough but i dont know if i can build from this… but thanks again for the effort man! really appreciated!

I think the only way to do this is by using a mod grub (if your laptop can boot with secure boot disabled) and enable-disable-enable intel ptt, while also disable-enable-disable both TPM 2.0 and 1.2, since default value was enabled for all TPM + PTT.

Or maybe, try this [Tool] zedk - UEFI BIOS Editor/Unlocker (still, it needs Secure Boot to be turned off completely), i used it on my Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3, i can access several hidden menus. I have a precision 7530 but i never tested it.

ill give that tool a try… i dont think grub with a setup_var is gonna work since my VarStoreInfo = 0xFFFF when using the ifrextractor or am i doing something wrong/not understanding correctly?

You can try to use this for Uefi Editor purposes. You’ll see the setup ifr.

the url does not seem to be working

Idk if you can access gitee, but here’s the release page: ue-assist Releases - Gitee

and what is the difference between this and the uefi-editor? sorry if that is a dumb question

edit: the zedk tool seems real cool but unfortunatly no useful settings for me it seems :frowning:

The tool is for easy-quick extract and rebuild the bios. When you extract the bios, you would see the _Setup folder created, that contains the needed parts for uefi editor. there, you can find setup_ifr.txt to see your VarStore you want to mingle with.

btw, the zedk tool shows you no menu related to ptt (you did prepare-setup.nsh after the shell startup.nsh launched, before running UiApp.efi right?)

yes! i did as the instructions. Got a couple of hidden menus but nothing that seemed useful for this problem… i already got the ifr from my bios image but TPM bios settings are not stored on the nvram since the varstoreInfo show up as 0xFFFF at least for me when i inspect the ifr

I am still getting no boot if i change something :frowning: it instantly triggers a bios corruption state

Hey, sorry to resurrect this, but I may have hit a snag before flashing a new bios. What is your 256 MB bios chip?

Mine is a GigaDevice GD25B256D YIG. When I dumped the bios, the closest I could get with the NeoProgrammer was to select the GD25B512ME. I didn’t “detect” the chipset; I selected that one, and it read it right away.

Yesterday, I checked it with another read, and because the selected chipset was 512 MB, the 2nd time, it created 256 MB of padding at the end of the BIOS region, that I hex editor discarded, which then exactly matched my original pull.

Then paranoia set in, and I started to worry about not having the exact chipset. When I “detected”, NeoProgrammer selected GD25Q256. But there may be an issue with my B chip.

My GD25B512ME and GD25Q256 bios dumps are not identical. I’m going to import the B chipset. We’ll see.
