[Problem] GPU not recognized anywhere Dell M4800 + RTX 4060

Hi, guys, I have bought an RTX 4060 MXM-A and it just doesn’t work on my Dell Precision M4800. It was also tested in Alienware M17xR4 by another user and it worked, although it was hot, but still.

My laptop acts like it doesn’t see it. It is not visible in Windows (Device Manager) and Linux. BIOS definitely knows it is there, Switchable Graphics option isn’t greyed out, and when it is turned off, after BIOS settings are applied laptop reboots, but then shuts down and starts again, also reversing the change.

Resizable Bar is not an issue, this GPU works without it, I have also modified my BIOS so it has it now.

Any clue on what to do? I need this GPU to work ASAP. Any help would be appreciated.

@dsanke sorry for tagging you, I hope you don’t find it annoying or offensive. I saw your numerous BIOS mods for Clevo laptops, including mods to support RTX GPUs. Would it be possible to do the same with my M4800? And if it is - please, explain how to do it.

Any ideas, guys?

Since no one it’s answering I’ll try with my little knowledge. I think in this case the model of your motherboard is foundamental: there are 2 versions of M4800 motherboards one with an LVDS output to the display, and the other with the embeddedDisplayPort (eDP). Newer graphics cards could have problems with the old muxed output with the LVDS version. You should check the model of your motherboard LA-9772P it’s the eDP version (for the 4k displays but can use 1080p eDP too) and the LA-9771P it’s the LVDS version used for 1366x768 and 1080p displays. But! If you have the 1080p you could have an eDP anyway because Dell mixed up things. After you have checked the motherboard model under the palmrest and the ssd caddy you can check if your service tag tells you what display you have

It would help you and us to know if your 4060 mxm don’t work because of this or because of some other problem. I have an LA-9771P with eDP and I am not sure if I should try this upgrade! Let us know!

I have two M4800-s;
LA-9771P with LVDS
LA-9772P with eDP

The one I am trying to couple it with is 9772P

And the LA-9772P that you are testing does have the i7-4800MQ or the i7-4980HQ? The second one showed some problems with the displayport output, as you know

I have the second one installed, but I am not sure about those issues, DisplayPort works, yet the output is handled by Quadro T1000. Can’t remember about HDMI though, I will try to get that 4800MQ back, but it won’t be easy, it is dying, one memory channel has died for some reason.

I am not sure if that will help though… There is gotta be something else…
I have tried to tinker with DSDT/SSDT tables in BIOS and closest I’ve got was a BSOD with ACPI_BIOS_ERROR. I am no expert at this, but what I was doing is just trying to bypass several GPU checks in SgACPI (SgRef/SgPeg), AmiBoardInfo (main DSDT table) and NvdTabl “NvdRef”.

Quadro T1000 boots fine with those modifications, but RTX 4060 doesn’t, showing the aforementioned BSOD.

Since you already have a 4060 it is worth every try. I am not expert enought to suggest you the correct bios modifications but I would try first with a known working system, so a 4th gen cpu with a standard igpu maybe an i5-4200M just to test everything works. I would test it with the LA-9772P and from here I would try to modify the bios if needed

@Lost_N_BIOS do you have any hint?

If the M4800 works with a 3dfx Voodoo4 it MUST work with a 4060 too xD
