[REQUEST] Enable Hyper M.2 setting on Maximus X Hero

Hello everyone,

I have a Hyper m.2 X16 V2 card that I would like to use with a Maximus X Hero (Non-Wifi) motherboard.

According to the support page for that card, I should be able to use 2 drives on the 2nd PCIe slot on that motherboard.
Google ([Motherboard] Compatibility of PCIE bifurcation between Hyper M.2 series Cards and Add-On Graphic Cards) its the first page.

I found in the manual that I need to enable a setting in the bios called “HyperM.2 X16” but I can’t find the option in the bios.

So how can this setting be enabled?
Does the BIOS need to be modded or is there something I am missing?

I am using BIOS version 2102

Thanks in advance.

@BigGoogleyEyes - Do you want that BIOS version edited, or do you want to update to latest version?
Never mind, your BIOS does not have the hyper setting. So, manual images must be made from other boards BIOS, or an earlier version of the BIOS (I checked 2102 and 2301)
See if you can tell what BIOS version is used in those images. Otherwise, the setting may now be renamed or something, you’ll have to ask on Asus forum to be sure, or other forums where users have this board and overclock/benchmark and talk PC’s often etc.

@Lost_N_BIOS
Thanks for your fast reply

I think the BIOS 1401 of the Maximus XI hero has the option, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDuQCDqZ8Ik&t=577s from this video.
(I think its BIOS 1401 judging from the date of the video and the date of the BIOSes on the asus website for that board so I could be wrong)

It it possible to port the option from that board?
I will also ask on the Asus forums.

Thanks for your help.

Have u checked latest bios for it…Version 2402 dated 2020/08/04

@BigGoogleyEyes - Yes, many other Asus boards have this option, but your model does not, at least not in the BIOS versions I checked, so we can’t make visible for you.
No, it’s not something you can simply copy/paste from one BIOS to another

@MeatWar - Thanks, I didn’t know there was newer than 2301, I just checked 2402, same as previous ones I checked, this option is not there.
He’ll have to confirm from his manual what BIOS version is shown in the images, then I can check that version and he can use that BIOS if it’s there (+ We’ll update it)

@Lost_N_BIOS Well this board mentions it in the manual at page 9 under “Expansion Slots”, https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG…/HelpDesk_BIOS/
Strangely the manual for my board (Maximus X Hero non-wifi) does not mention it.
But the support page for the Hyper card definitely supports it…

Is the WIfi board bios in any way compatible with the non-wifi?

@BigGoogleyEyes - Yes I believed you, as I mentioned please look in your manual at all the BIOS images and see if you can tell me what BIOS version they used for the images.
It may also not even be your models BIOS they used for the images, and it may be they left in the test by mistake, due to copy/paste or using general base manual to make out manual for several models etc. The “Wifi” version DOES have this in it’s BIOS.
And yes, the BIOS would be compatible with your board, but it’s a whole deal for us to get you flashed over to that BIOS, vs you asking Asus to put this setting back into the non-Wifi model. Unless they specifically removed it for sale reasons, to try and get people to buy the Wifi mode?
They should send you BIOS with it back in there, if their support is worth anything (I am not sure!?)

If it comes down to it, I can help you get flashed over to the Wifi version BIOS, but this is not ideal or user friendly (ie may involve some technical things for you to do, out of the norm)
Ohh wait, maybe not so bad as I was thinking initially since this board has USB Flashback! That makes it a bit easier on you because I can simply edit the WIFI BIOS to have your board ID and your boards flashback module, then you can USB Flashback it in (Method #1)
But, that way, each time there was BIOS update you’d need this done again. So, we can do that, OR, I can edit your current BIOS (in the BIOS Now) to have the the WIFI BIOS ID and flashback module, then you can always directly USB Flashback any future BIOS updates from the WIFI model (Method #2)
However, that method will involve some technical for you stuff to do. You will need to unlock some locks via grub/setup_var (I have a guide), and then you will dump BIOS region with FPT, send to me for edit, then flash it back in once I am done, then you USB Flashback to the WIFI BIOS directly.

Which way do you want to proceed, or do you want to wait on Asus to reply to your support request asking for that to be added back into the non-WIFI BIOS?

@Lost_N_BIOS

Wow, thank you so much for your help, you are amazing.

Oh sorry, now I understand what you meant by finding the BIOS version in the manual, its Version 0203.

Thank you for checking the Wifi boards bios, I will email Asus directly and ask them if they would add this option into the BIOS.

So, I think will wait for Asus to reply first, maybe they will help.

Thank you so much for your help.

I will keep you updated if they respond.

@BigGoogleyEyes - Thanks I could not check BIOS 0203, it’s not on their site (even hidden, checked HK and CN Asus server too), and I can’t find it online anywhere
I checked earliest one they have online on all servers 0802, and it does not have this either, so I assume the image/text/info is incorrect copy/paste, or they forgot to remove when doing the WIFI vs non-Wifi manuals.
If they don’t help, we can sort it for you

@Lost_N_BIOS Hello! Long time no chat :slight_smile:

After contacting ASUS for a month they decided to tell me that this board doesn’t support the card and then they removed the board from the compatible list. (Pathetic, right? You were right, their support isn’t worth anything, lol)

So I guess that means we need to mod this bios.

What method do you suggest is the best?
I think that I won’t be updating the BIOS after this so maybe Method 1 would be easier? I’m not sure.

Thank you so much.

@Lost_N_BIOS
So, I tried using UEFITool to take the body that contained the hyper m.2 setting(I just searched for the string "hyper m.2" and used the body that showed up) from the wifi bios and repleced the corresponding body in the non wifi bios.

I then flashed it and the setting showed up (YAY) but it doesnt do anything and any changes made the any bios steeings dont save, and its still wont show the 2nd drive on the hyper card.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. I think this setting enables PCIe bifurcation on PCIe slot 2? if that helps haha :slight_smile:

@Lost_N_BIOS
Any update for this?
Thanks.

@Lost_N_BIOS
Hello, would it be possible for you to help with this?
I just don’t know how to make this work.

Thanks.

Hi, is this still possible? Thanks.
