[Request] Unlock BIOS/UEFI for AMD 395 (Strix Halo)

I booted the laptop, hit ESC to choose where to boot from, chose flash drive.

And then it went to run the script on a black screen (which at first I panicked a little bit :joy:). Then it all automatically entered the BIOS that I shared screenshot of.

Are you sure about this?

Just a little update regarding this:

@Sweet_Kitten has been kindly trying a few methods to unlock this, and I have been testing them on my Asus Z13 (2025). So far it doesn’t look good unfortunately. If it comes to fruition, I’d be sure to do a further update here.

I was able to run Smokeless UMAF from flash drive. Here’s a video I recorded showing more advanced options revealed. I don’t know much about this subject (yet!). Does this help at all?

I’ve read that UXTU is only used for undervolting and controlling power limits, and UMAF is for modify memory properties.

Nice vid.

If umaf could save your changes, I wouldn’t bother making seperate scripts for your device. Also, according ot the video, amd overclocking page is missing 8 additional menus, which is another reason to use the patcher.

Maybe I’m just paranoid, but today I opened your last ‘srep.log’… and found out that the program reads EsaFull driver with size of 0x1DFD80 bytes, while in uefi image downloaded from support page it has 0x1E0340 bytes. Something’s wrong, driver should be exactly 1472‬ bytes bigger.
FYI, I downloaded ‘GZ302EA.308’ update.

Indeed! Having the patcher would be fantastic!

That’s weird! I wonder what that 1472 bytes could be! I’m seeing in this thread, someone is saying this: “taking the ASUS bios from their site and figuring out how to get it the right file size”. Maybe it’s something that can help us here?!

I was just browsing the Smokeless UMAF UEFI and looking at the options and the prospect of potentially bringing these to Z13 fills me with excitement (I know I shouldn’t be yet)… especially:

  • SMU Common Options > System Configuration: I can see 45w, 55w, 85w, 120w. It’d be fantastic if 120 watt can be set. It doesn’t mean I’m going to use it… just having that option available would be great, just like OnexPlayer Super X (Liquid Cooled variant)
  • Under EC/PD Configuration, I can Charger mode BYPASS (which is disabled right now). This is what a lot of people are pissed about at Asus!
  • NVMe RAID mode: right now disabled

Now, my approach is very conservative as like I said I jumped through a lot of hoops to acquire this expensive Z13 (with a lot of difficulty) as they’re not available in Canada. So not modifying any special settings right now… sticking to absolutely safe ones first… I’ll be taking baby steps.

Regarding memory LPDDR Timing Configuration options seem very limiting right now; I see tRAS but none of tCK, tCL, tCWL, tRTP, etc. that I see other systems might have. What doesn’t help is I’m not well versed in these either. More reading to do about these!

Hi all,

I have a Minisforum MS-01 Max with the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (Strix Halo) and I’m trying to access the AMD Overclocking menus using Smokeless UMAF from USB (no BIOS flashing — only temporary runtime access).

In ETA PRIME’s video about this same device, UMAF shows options like:

• CPU Boost Clock Override (+200)
• Max GPU Clock Override (+200 MHz)

Video for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7KgWVeHx3E&t=128s

However, when I run the standard UMAF build from GitHub on my system, those options do not appear. I get fewer AMD OC menus than shown in the video.

So my question is:

Is there a way to launch UMAF with a custom unlocked OC menu from USB on the MS-01 Max, or am I missing a specific UMAF version/module?

Details:
• Latest official Minisforum BIOS installed
• Secure Boot disabled
• System boots UMAF fine
• 128GB RAM model

I’m only interested in enabling those AMD OC menus — not flashing or permanently modifying firmware.

If anyone (incl. @Sweet_Kitten if available) can point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks!

Are your BIOS version and the one in that video different? I wonder if that’s the cause!

@saulozt
Hello.
First of all, I didn’t see umaf used in the video. Amd ocing menu is available for ETA PRIME in the default bios, and they have MS-S1 model. So I think this is the reason why the options are not here for you.

Idk if this is possible. All I can do is to make an unlock script and pray it works.

Thank you very much for your reply, @Sweet_Kitten

The default BIOS on the MS-S1 Max seems to be different. In another ETA Prime video, at minute 4:04, you can see a graphical BIOS interface. I’ll leave the video link here as reference:

https://youtu.be/uIjvpuFzQps?t=243

However, in his SteamOS video on the MS-S1 Max, the BIOS looks “different”… more like a conventional text-based BIOS, and it also shows more settings available. So it looks like the same machine, but with different BIOS versions (?). He also mentions using Smokeless UMAF in the video, but if you confirm that’s not the case, then I’m honestly confused about what he was using.

The BIOS version in his video is probably older, since the video was uploaded 3 months ago. Maybe Minisforum added some kind of lock in the newer versions.

The BIOS file is available on the Minisforum website, here:
https://pc-file-web.oss-cn-shenzhen.aliyuncs.com/MS-S1%20MAX/BIOS/SHWSA_1.06_260104B.7z

If you need any files or info from my side to try creating an unlock script for UMAF, just tell me.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help and support :folded_hands:

I’m confused too. I looked up online for bios pictures of MS-S1 and this fancy GUI shown on all of them.

Yes, I actually need to know whether MS-01 Max mini pc with the Ryzen AI exists or not, cuz I couldn’t find a support page for it. 2 days ago you asked for the access to AMD Overclocking menus on MS-01 Max, but I can’t make a script without having a bios file for the device.

Sorry for the confusion @Sweet_Kitten there is no “MS-01 Max”. I wrote that wrong in my first post. The correct model is the MS-S1 Max, which is the same one ETA Prime used in his SteamOS video with the Ryzen Max+ 395.

The unit he has is the same model I own. The BIOS he shows in his MS-S1 Max review is the same BIOS type that I have (the fancy GUI), just an older version. Mine is version 1.06 (link in my previous post).

However, the BIOS interface he uses in the SteamOS video on the MS-S1 Max looks completely different (old UI). He says it’s Smokeless UMAF, but apparently it may not be. At this point, the only thing left for me is to try an unlocked UMAF build and hope it works.

I didn’t watch the video completely, so I missed that. Might re-watch it later and see if things start to make sense.

Also, I opened the bios version 1.06 file and want to tell you Minisforum removed Amd Overclocking menu completely. Like, you can’t unhide it, since it’s simply not there anymore. Do you have any older update version for me to check? Nevermind, I downloaded ver. 1.03 dated september 2025 and its all the same. I need to find even lower.

Thanks agin @Sweet_Kitten :folded_hands:t2:

I only have the download link for BIOS version **1.05: **
https://pc-file-web.oss-cn-shenzhen.aliyuncs.com/MS-S1%20MAX/BIOS/SHWSA_1.05_251223A.7z

ETA Prime’s unit was running **version 0.10 (**3 months ago). And I read on Reddit that before 1.05 came out in December, the latest version was 1.03. I’ve already sent DMs to a couple of people to see if any of them still have the 1.03 .7z file. I also posted in the official Discord to ask whether someone might still have 1.03 or even older versions like 0.10.

Additionally, I found two GitHub repos containing several BIOS versions for other Minisforum models. Maybe some of them are AMD BIOS builds as well. I think there are Minisforum models using the Strix Halo 380, but I’m not sure whether that helps. Still, I’ll leave the links here just in case.

For now I’ll wait and see if anyone on Discord or Reddit replies with the 1.03 .7z or an older one. Hopefully I get lucky. Otherwise, the only version I can provide right now is 1.05.

github rezzorix/minisforum-bios-updates/tree/main/WINPE

@saulozt
Thanks for the effort. Btw, here’s version 1.03 dl link.

I watched the video again and, indeed, they said about umaf from github. However, in the video you can clearly see Aptio trademark strings in UI, and this isn’t how umaf should look like. I’m still confused.

Without having 0.10 version we can try one thing the author of umaf did to show up AMD OCing menu on platforms with Renoir cpus. I’m going to send the file in private messages.

EDIT: It didn’t work.

A bit off-topic, but quite frankly, ETA Prime is not a credible channel AT ALL! I personally don’t even click on his videos. It doesn’t offer any criticism or critical thinking.

Hello people,

I am sorry in advance if this subject is irrelevant or too old. I wanted to ask the OP, did you figure out how to unlock the bios settings on your Rog Flow Z13? Did the Smokeless UMAF work?
I got the Flow z13 myself recently and realized the locked state of Bios. Unfortunately my bios version is 311 and not 308. So I wonder if Smokeless UMAF would work on the 311? Did you get it to work on yours, the 308 version?
I was thinking about downgrading the bios version from 311 to 308 if it allows me to use the Smokeless.

What I want to achieve is: to open up the bios settings to be able to disable cores and to undervolt both CPU and GPU through Bios settings.

Hi there, no need to be sorry. This is still being worked on, but unfortunately none of the approaches kindly provided by @Sweet_Kitten and tested by myself have worked so far! Even on my BIOS version 3.08 things are locked down and I have not been able to unlock them!

The other unfortunate news is that, as far as I know, you can’t downgrade the BIOS (at least using conventional tools/methods). I tried to downgrade to 3.06 and it failed. I also want to do so much more with this chip, but… Asus :expressionless_face::unamused_face:

But please stay tuned, as there might be some progress even as of today.
