It’s running Linux, and my WiFi card is slow I need to upgrade it but it’s locked, also it would be great if you could remove the CPU lock so I can upgrade it, as this has a socket on the CPU
Edit by Fernando: Thread title shortened
Sweet kitten can you help me
@Spectre
Latest BIOS version is protected by RSA encryption. It is in HP bootblock part, so a programmer required.
Ah ok
I’ll see if I can get one
Could you tell me what you can unlock, I found one SPI programmer I’ll buy
Your BIOS doesn’t have a CPU upgrade lock, but I can help with the WIFI card.
I will consider any of your requests.
Could you help, I have a programmer
Make a copy of BIOS with it and share the copy with me.
Sorry about the delay, my laptop needed to get repaired, I’ll send the bios dump soon
Dear @Sweet_Kitten , the latest BIOS of my laptop is RSA encrypted from the official HP website. If i use a programmer, can I dump the unencrypted BIOS file?
@Fadel_Hel
You could mention me from another thread. You have a different laptop than Pavilion G6, isn’t it?
Anyways, you can get the decrypted BIOS file from chip by using an spi programmer and from the update executable as well.
Thank you for the reply. Yes I probably should have. I have an HP Victus 16 r1xxx with an i7 14700HX which has locked undervolting and overclocking. It also has UEFI variable write-protection, so I cannot just disable CFG Lock, Overclocking Lock, and Undervolt protection by editing variables.
So now I ordered my CH341a programmer and hopefully I can do these simple mods to my unencrypted BIOS file, and hopefully (x2 lol) the modded BIOS would be flashable.
Is there anything I should look out for?
Look for a good quality photo or schematics, so you could determine whether the spi chip type is SOIC-8 or WSON-8. This may be important regarding which programmer you ordered.
Also, try learning bios editing in advance, so you won’t lose much time after getting the programmer.
That’s a great idea. Could you link me to some good guide for clear BIOS modding? I dont understand the syntax of the output of IFRExctractor beyond the UEFI side of things.
I am trying to learn from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcGsxMPA5Vk
Also I would like to ask, given your experience with modern Insyde BIOSes, do you think I will be able to flash the modded BIOS without some kind of checksum bypass? Like is using a disassembler and patching some check routine usually necessary?
Patching check routines in hp laptops is necessary since 2012. And since I don’t know which routine has to be modified for your particular laptop, I can’t give much of a help with this. This means it’s unlikely that you’ll get the bios unlocked.
Without the hp protection bypass you can edit default variables, but that’s it.
I didn’t fully understand. So without any patching, am I still able to edit the default variables?
If everything about the BIOS is the same except the default UEFI variables are slightly changed, is it less likely for me to encounter flashing issues or boot issues after a successful flash?
Yes, you can’t protect a thing which supposed to change dynamically, like nvram and paddings.
OH thats amazing. Im actually sooo excited, my programmer will come in two days and i’ll have time to work on it on the weekend. Thank you tons @Sweet_Kitten
