Resolving an A5 BSOD in windows7 using grub2?

@diderius6

do you still have your x570 system?

@infuscomus

Yes, but I dont like at all, because it is unstable as much as possible,
brr…Build from Asus, quick and dirty. I asked Asus support and they answered to me,
that they do not have their own(!) Bios…
Dietmar

PS: My comment about this board, that for example nearly no Ram can work with it,
was deleted at https://geizhals.de

@diderius6

I’ve had some problems with my gigabyte TRX40 designare - mainly pcie lane allocation, it still not perfect but al least all the slots work correctly now.

Gigabyte support have been helpful, but I would’ve preferred they catch these problems in their labs before release rather than me telling them about it.

Maybe you were just unlucky and by coincidence managed to get a lemon of a motherboard.

I have 2 of them,
first 99% bad
second 89%
Dietmar

@diderius6

would you say x570 is a bad chipset? or ASUS is a bad manufacturer?

@infuscomus
Dont know.
Unnice people in support there. 2 crazy boards with errors as much as possible are just too much.
And on the first board (hardware) broken lines on the way to the Bios chip.
Before Asus makes good boards, before…

@diderius6

I think I’ve got an idea on what the problem is -

Since the SSDT table that windows 7 is telling me causes the A5 BSOD is meant for enumerating the CPU cores, and my linux logs are telling me there are errors related to this - AE_NOT_FOUND

based on this I decided to see if there were records referring to these in the DSDT tables.

From this I have noticed that on my working AB350 system there are matching Processor Scopes in both the DSDT and SSDT.

but the DSDT of my threadripper system is lacking these processors inside it and the only reference made is in the SSDT table about which linux is saying AE_NOT_FOUND.

So I think the processors are not being properly enumerated by ACPI, I think I’m going to need to add these by hand.

@infuscomus

May be, the reason is at another place. I come to this, because even without any Acpi in XP you cant install or start XP.
And that you cant install legacy Win7.
It can be, that the CSM module for to emulate a legacy Bios,
does not give out an Irq INT 13h for your harddisk.
If this is true,
then only via the S4e methode XP can be booted on this compi
Dietmar

@diderius6

what is this S4e method?

You start XP from an USB stick,
and when all the drivers are loaded,
XP looses contact to the USB stick.
When you put the same signature and checksum of the MBR in the USB MBR as on the connected harddisk,
XP thinks, oh this is my bootdevice and switch to the harddisk.
Via this method I can boot a lot of compis via nvme,
without any mentioned about nvme in Bios
Dietmar

PS: To prepare such an USB stick is not easy, because you need an XP on it, which would run on your compi.
So you have at least to edit the driver for Iastor by hand in registry.

@diderius6

This is an A5 BSOD I have not seen before -

20201020_180121.jpg

@infuscomus
Oh, interesting

BSOD A5 0x1000A

The Root System Description Pointer (RSDP) or Extended System Description Table (XSDT) could not be located

Is this from Win7?

We can also make a try to hack acpi.sys from Win7
Dietmar

PS: In acpi.sys from XP this Bsod does not exist.

EDIT: May be the graphiccard makes this acpi Bsod.

@infuscomus
I see, that this Bsod under win7 only happens when I’m using the motherboard’s 6G SATA connectors.
It is related to bad Bios.
Can you change the settings for PCI mode on the slots, where you connect your harddisk?
Or make a try to boot via nvme,
for me this nvme boot works
Dietmar

ASUS is a very bad manufacturer, alway help M$ hard sell the newer Windows.

@diderius6

I know why I got that BSOD now, I was using the acpi command incorrectly - you are not supposed to use the acpi command more than once when replacing your ACPI tables, instead you should only use the command once and replace all the tables you want to replace all at once.

So I started over from scratch - I successfully loaded my modded DSDT table (changed OSVR references -

- in my case

If (_OSI (“Windows 2001 SP1”))
{
Store (0x09, OSVR)
}

So I looked for OSVR and found

If (LAnd (LOr (LGreaterEqual (OSVR, 0x0C), LEqual (OSVR, Zero)),

etc…

replace 0x0C with 0x09 now DSDT loads, but next A5 BSOD refers to an SSDT table which I have not yet figured out how to fix.

Even with additional _OSI entries it will not load.

any ideas?

ssdt8-MOD-ATTEMPT.zip (11.1 KB)

@Mov_AX_0xDEAD @daniel_k

Have you had any experience with ACPI table modding?

Hi infuscomus,

I hate acpi tables, ugly and unfriendly syntax, my help can be very little

if you ask for ssdt, its like library for main dsdt
bios set list of active tables to special ram adresses below 640kB
rweverything saves tables from this list, it same list for OSes

@infuscomus
checked builds of windows has enabled logging to debug console, it will show much more information about what’s happening, acpi.sys may report hints like "AMLIInitiaize: failed to allocate _OSI name object"

you need:
1) second pc (as diderius6 told) with proper connection cable type for remote debugging
you dont need install new windows, just replace acpi.sys to version from win7 checked .ISO
2) config BCD setting to enable debugging, it maybe tricky because you can do it from live win8/10
3) enable acpi.sys logging (currently dont know how, but it is possible)
