[Solved] Extraction of Dell's BIOS Installer named *.EXE

That sounds ideal, hope the price is decent! Before you purchase, if you have not already, did you also just search for the motherboard, you might be able to find that alone even cheaper.

Iā€™ve checked multiple online suppliers and the motherboard alone was in excess of $700 for the same CPU/GPU combo. Way more than I want to sink into this thing.

Iā€™d never suggest you look there, but rather ebay I see them there for $240-270 (used and new), but that may not be with same CPU/GPU, but if thatā€™s cheaper than the entire system you were eyeballing maybe that would be better route even with lesser CPU/GPU
Itā€™s too bad CPU/GPU soldered in, otherwise board would only be $50-75 maybe

Besides school, my kid uses it for gaming so wanted to stick with the 980M. The 960s and 970s were around $300 which I felt were still high. Iā€™ve capped my bid for the bare bones system at half that. So getting it wouldnā€™t be too bad, but thatā€™s still 5 days away from now.

Hi all, sorry to ask but just a quick one. Can a Dell service tag be reset or changed by a bios mod? Or is the eeprom (where the ST is stored) unchanged by Bios mods? Also I got a bios extracted but thereā€™s no bin, just lots of data and payload files, wondering where the .bin is.

Thanks for your time

Well @mhcallies1 I hope you score a good deal!

@Saitama - yes, BIOS edit can change service tag, or it can be done with Dell DST CD Tools - 8470p 8570p bios moding tools
As for your other question about .bin, link me to the Dell exe download and I will check

Thanks for the info Lost. I will do more research into it then. I have tried the DST tools, sadly all these new BIOSes from Dell are completely incompatible with SVCTAG and all EE erase tools.

This is the bios, its a Latitude 5289: https://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER0525444ā€¦5289_1.15.1.exe

Although I donā€™t want to be a request pest and would rather gain the knowledge on how to fix it myself.

Thanks again!

What about both Asset Tag and Asset_A209? If can be done at the BIOS level on your backup file/dump, using UEIFTool (Search for values and you will find padding and or NVRAM/SMBIOS files that contain all the board specifics) and or hex editing (All may not be visible that way due to compressed files)
No pestering at all! I asked for the BIOS link to check for you if bin/rom BIOS can be obtained from that or not, if not you may need to find other (Working) user dump somewhere and edit that with your board specifics, I can help you with that too later if you canā€™t find and need.

I can only get HDR and extracted HDR from that file, you can use Dell command and configure or Dell Client Configuration Utility to flash with the HDR.

Maybe Plutomaniac can tell you how to make bin/rom from that exe? If not, and you canā€™t flash via the above apps, you will have to find user dump to modify, or dump your own via programmer (or BIOS region with FPT possibly) and then modify that.

You extract the HDR executable to its components using Dell HDR Module Extractor and then find a dump (or make you own) to replace whatever regions are included in the HDR via UEFITool (usually BIOS & GbE).

Obtain HDR I can do, extract HDR I can do, replace regions I can do but I donā€™t understand which ones are missing, which need replaced where (HDR and BIOS Dump never look close at all to me in UEFITool)
I know BIOS region (Payload data) from HDR looks more like a BIOS usually, but Iā€™m still at a loss on how to create a from scratch usable bin from all of that HDR/HDR extracted.

Now, fixing a direct programmer dump with all that I could handle without assistance I think, but creation from the above mentioned Iā€™m at a loss (even when comparing with a dump Iā€™ve not got it correct before, a few times)
Is there a hidden guide on this to learn from?

Thanks for the help both. Unfortunately all versions of Asset tool do not work, (they work on Asset tags fine but service tags return an error.)

Iā€™ll give a go at UEFI tool tomorrow, see what I can find regarding the STag. Hopefully I can recompile into a HDR and Dell CCU wont throw security issues my way.

Its not a huge deal though, (I made a typo entering the tag on a replacement board) thanks again anyway!

HDR can be used directly with the tools mentioned (Dell command and configure or Dell Client Configuration Utility), you do not need to modify it for those.

If you have programmer, dump the BIOS or BIOS region, find the error you made or all digits up to that error and then youā€™ll find all mistake entries (often there is a lot of duplicates of these tags) Or same can be done with Intel FPT (Use V11 System Tools package from ME section of the forum)
Dump via FPT using this command >> FPTw.exe -bios -d biosreg.bin

If you cannot find these areas in the dump, PM me the tag details and where you think you made the mistake in the details, and a BIOS dump and I will find for you and give you the info or make the corrections if you need that done

No guide needed. The HDR in this case contains BIOS (good), GbE (good) and RGN CSME (useless). Whatā€™s missing? The Flash Descriptor and CSME settings. You can get the last two from any same system dump. Replace its BIOS & GbE via UEFITool, run it through the Engine CleanUp Guide for a Configured CSME and the final SPI image is ready.

Thanks Plutomaniac, so payload.data is OK as BIOS region?

Yes, data.payload is the BIOS, albeit stock of course.

Can anyone help, I need HDR and ROM file from Dell bios for Dell inspiron 7720 I keep getting errors with many ways and tools I have tried.
Thank youā€¦

@Ger - run the exe you get most files at temp folder (flashing apps/sys files, and .cap BIOS), here are those files + .bin (None are complete BIOS) - http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?filā€¦309067621775397
Default command used from the exe with cap file >> /nodelay /bbl /bcp /silent /file BIOS.cap
Not sure which exe flash app uses those flags during the flash

If you are trying to recover a system, you need to find working valid dumps, then remake new clean images to use with programmer. If this is Dell 17R or 14R 7720 I can get dumps for you, maybe just 7720 too, I didnā€™t download to check but I can later if you need.

Itā€™s for a Dell 17R 7720, Mobo 072P0M.
Can this not be recovered via USB or disk?
If not can the chip be flashed ā€˜on boardā€™ with spi programmer & test clip?

Thank youā€¦

Iā€™m not sure about recovery methods, you will have to look in google for your model and recovery.

Yes, could be done with programmer, IF you can find valid working dump to edit your details back into before programming.
I can get you 17R 7720 dump to use, or fix a BIOS image for you, please dump your current BIOS chip or chips if there are more than one, and zip then upload and I will make for you.

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 15R 5521. It beeps one time when starting up and does not show anything, which means that the BIOS has problems.
I tried different key combinations to get it into recovery mode, but this didnā€™t work.
So I wanted to flash a new BIOS image to the chip with a spi programmer, test clip and the CH341 programmer software.
My problem is that I canā€™t find a BIOS image file to flash. I can download a .exe from dell, but had no luck extracting the .bin or .hdr from it.
The BIOS .exe can be found here: https://www.dell.com/support/home/de/de/ā€¦spiron-15r-5521

I hope you can help me!
