Hi all
After upgrading a brand new notebook to Windows 10, I cannot install a new version of the Intel RST drivers (14.6.1.1030), I get the following error:
The setup program ended prematurely because of the following error: Fatal error during installation.
Apparently this is a known issue as outlined here Hp Advisory
The resolution is to either uninstall the driver before upgrading to 10, or install the new driver first. Clearly this is no good to me after the fact. They say if the issue has already occurred then to download RST 14.5.0.1081 and run the repair option.
Trouble is there is no repair option, and I’ve never seen a repair option for any RST install package.
So… Anyone know how to fix the problem. I can of course manually update the driver only via Device Manager, but I can’t update the application.
Any of you gurus can help me out ?
Cheers

Welcome at Win-RAID Forum!
The Intel RST Software should never been updated, but replaced instead.
This is the procedure:
1. Uninstall the currently running Intel RST Software from within the Control Panel > “Add/remove Programs”.
2. Reboot.
3. Install the desired Intel RST Drivers & Software Set.

Thanks for the reply Dieter, but …
The RST can’t be uninstalled either, it throws the same fatal error.
Attempting to install or uninstall the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) driver when upgrading to Windows 10 may fail with the following message displayed:
The setup program ended prematurely because of the following error: Fatal error during installation.
So I can’t uninstall it, and I can’t install a new version. Hence me coming here for help from the experts
This indicates, that you are already running an Intel RST Software, which has been updated without having uninstalled the previously running Intel RST Software.
Can you roll back to the previously used Intel RST Software version?
If not, maybe it will help, if you disable the Intel RST Service.
Hi again
There is no previous version to roll back to.
This was a brand new out of box HP notebook, it was upgraded to windows 10 immediately. So the RST installed is just version 13.2.0.1016 that came pre-installed in Win 7.
I tried stopping the service, still throws the fatal error on either uninstalling or trying to install the latest version.
Any other ideas ?
No, Win7 has no in-box Intel RST RAID driver (it is an Intel MSM v8.9.x.xxxx one) and the Win10 in-box Intel RAID driver is the RST v13.2.0.1022.
Does this mean, that your OS is now running simultaneously with the in-box Intel RST driver v13.2.0.1022 and the Intel RST software v14.5.0.1081?
If yes, it may be an option to manually update the Intel RAID driver from within the Device Manager to v14.5.0.1081, to reboot and then to uninstall the Intel RST Software from within the Control Panel. After having rebooted again you should be able to get the desired Intel RST Drivers & Software Set installed.
Hi again
I think we have our wires crossed a little bit
RST 13.2.0.16 was pre-installed as part of the HP provided installation, I understand that it was not part of Windows 7 itself.
So Windows 10 is still running 13.2.0.16, as any attempt to uninstall it, or install 14.6.1.1030 over it fails with the error. (I’ve also tried a few other recent versions, including the linked from the HP article.)
I have updated the driver to 14.6.1.1030 from Device Manager, but I still can’t change the software set.
Cheers
An Intel RST version 13.2.0.16 doesn’t exist.
Please check the correct version number.
It is the task of HP to solve this problem, because it obviously was their mistake to pre-install an Intel RST Software, which cannot be removed anymore after the upgrade to Win10.
This is what I would do, if you don’t get the required support from HP:
1. Backup your important personal data.
2. Do a clean install of of the appropriate Win10 version (after having deleted the currently used system drive and the usually hidden boot partitions.
3. Once the OS is up and running, you can install the desired Intel RST Drivers & Software Set version.
Sorry 13.2.0.1016 is the version.
Yeah I didn’t really want to have to reinstall, it’s a clients machine that has everything setup and ready to go (I’m a IT reseller), it would be quite a lot of work to redo it all.
It’s not the end of the world to leave it as it is, it was just annoying me (I don’t like to be beaten)
So i was hoping, seeing you’ve been playing with this stuff for years, you might have known a secret command line switch or something, or a way to forcefully remove it.
Thanks for trying to help, much appreciated.
