AHCI & RAID Option ROM Modules

Fernando,

I thought it might, seeing as RAID is a subset of AHCI. But I did suspect my chipset is just too old.

Thank you for your help and advice. I have a final report you may find useful.

My current setup is 2 HHDs running Windows 7 in a RAID-0 array with a single SSD as storage. I’ll be reversing that soon, but the point I’m trying to make is interesting. Running MSM RAID ROM v8.2.x.x and the RST v11.2.x.x drivers, I have successfully tested TRIM functionality on the SSD using the Trimcheck tool. I was encouraged to try it after looking at this Intel webpage, particularly the last row of the large table.

http://www.intel.com//support/chipsets/imsm/sb/CS-022304.htm

This means when I reinstall Windows 7 on my SSD, I can remain in RAID mode and keep my HDD RAID-0 array for a higher performance secondary logical drive, which is exactly what I wanted to do when I bought the SSD. So I come out of this happy!

Again, Fernando, your help was invaluable, both your responses to my inquiries and your original forum posts. You made this possible for me to figure out and understand, which is why it’s working on my system right now. Many thanks to you.

Upd: OROM’s moved in 1 post.

Thank you very much for offering these actual ROM files.
Meanwhile I have added them to the start post of this thread.

Ok.

@Pacman
Hello.

I understand that the EFI-module not available yet?

@SoniX
No, Atleast i have not been able to find it.
The BIOS i got the 3.8 legacy ROM, had 3.7 SataDriver.

If I’m updating the ROM Modules, do I have to rebuild my RAID or will it run as before without any data loss ?

@ Bugger Vance:
Welcome at Win-RAID Forum!

Usually you have not to rebuild your RAID array, but sometimes it is strongly recommended.
Everything depends on the Chipset/Southbridge of your manboard, the RAID ROM version of your original BIOS and the RAID ROM version you want to insert.

Fernando

hi to all, and many thanks for this nice forum.

i have an Asus Sabertooth X79, with lastest biso 4104.

it conteins Intel Orom 3.5.1005 that if extracted from bios is 93.184 bytes.

here some questions:
1) what are the changelogs new feature bugfixed with new Orom 3.8.1009 ore lower?

2) i notice that Orom 3.6.0.1023 is alos 93.184 bytes
instead higher ones 3.7 adn 3.8 are 93.696 bytes !
so this would be they are incompatibles with my board?

best regard

imsims

@ imsims

Here are the notes up to 3.6.0.1093

Size does not matter, it is larger due to added info, you can use any of the new RST-E OROM’s.

@ imsims:
Welcome at Win-RAID Forum!

Now to your questions:
1. Intel has never published a changelog, when they offer a new RAID ROM module. The Intel RAID ROM v3.8.0.1009 has been designed for the use of the upcoming Intel RSTe drivers v3.8.x.xxxx. If you want to use the actually newest Intel RSTe drivers v3.7.0.1092, I recommend to update the Intel RAID ROM to v3.7.0.1049.
2. Don’t worry about the different size of the Intel RAID ROM module versions. They will all suit the BIOS of your mainboard. All Intel RAID ROM modules v3.x.x.xxxx are compatible with your X79 board.

Regards
Fernando

EDIT: When I wrote this statement, I did not realize, that odiebugs already had answered your questions.

But your answers look professional, mine look like I used a crayon. LOL

thank fernando!

i notice some Raid0 degrade, so i explain
i have 2 Samsung 256 830 in raid 0.

Yesterday : Intel Orom 3.2 and intel driver 3.5 : about 1024 MB/Sec
Today i upgrade to asus new bios that have 3.5 orom and i put 3.7 drivers : 941 MB/Sec.

Now i wil try your advice, i will mod last asus bios with intel 3.7 orom.

@About Trim
i test Trimcheck Tool of your forum in my raid 0 and it test TRIM IS OK : 00 00 00 data returned
Is it correct? RTS(e) Orom support TRIM in raid 0 ?

@ ASM 1061 : it it support trim? i have another 830 on that controller and TrimCheck says TRIM DISABLE.

@ Marvel 9130 : TrimCheck Ok.

best regards
imsims

If you want the best possible performance, you probably have to use the Intel RST(e) RAID drivers and OROM modules v11.x.x.xxxx or v12.x.x.xxxx.
Don’t you have the option to use them?
If not, you may replace the Intel RSTe RAID ROM v3.5 of your BIOS by the modded v12.7.0.1936 one, which I am offering >here< for X79 chipset mainboards.

AFAIK TRIM is not working within the RAID0, if you are using any v3.x.x.xxxx driver and OROM module. Look >here<.

EDIT: Neither the ASMedia nor the Marvell SATA Controller do support TRIM in RAID0.

As per Fernando request…

Intel RAID ROM 8.9.1.1002

@ ex58:
Thanks for offering the link to that old Inttel MSM RAID ROM v8.9.1.1002.
Has this RAID ROM version been modified (by you or someone else)?
I ask this, because there are some interesting text code differences between the v8.9.0.1023 and this latest Intel RAID ROM of the MSM branch.

@ all:
Meanwhile I have added the Intel MSM RAID ROM v8.9.1.1002 to the start post of this thread.

No, it’s untouch…I extracted direct from GB BIOS,only.
It’s apear somewhere in end of october/beginning of november 2010.

Thanks for your reply.
In this case I suspect, that Gigabyte has modified the ROM file to customize it for certain mainboards. It is hard to believe, that it is an untouched Intel product.

In this case,I will try to found same version, but from different BIOS.
Here is link for BIOS:
http://oldforum.gigabyte.de/forumdownloa…11/ep45ud3p.zip

That time (Oct.2010) GB doing fix for OCZ Sandforce FW 1.11…

http://oldforum.gigabyte.de/forumdownloa…is_20100930.htm

That all BIOS’s, I supose have same ROM:
http://oldforum.gigabyte.de/forumdownloa…etabios2010.htm

Edit:
Same version from EX58 BIOS:

http://www.jzelectronic.de/jz2/jzb/ex58exf13s.exe
or
http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/12/20/…/ex58exf13s.zip

I just have extracted the Intel RAID ROM. It is exactly the same as the file you have linked.
Nevertheless I believe, that Gigabyte has modified this Intel RAID ROM version especially for ICH10R SATA RAID Controllers with RAID5 support.
