Already tried all external connections, hdmi and mini display port. Check all cables and everything looks good. Here i put a rar with all windbond chips i found. Thanks a lot like always.

@pepebmx - Show me images of the board, both sides, not just "winbond" chips, winbond is only one brand of MANY that are used for BIOS.
I did not look at above images, so add them into new package.
Here it goes again with more images from both sides! I am really really scared right now, chequed continuity on almost all caps behind grapichs and they beep both sides. I dont know if some of them are filters and its normal. Or they are all caps that are shorted because of dead grapichs. Even behind cpu. HOPE NOT I am not an expert at all but i always try to check some basic things. Hope it is only a bios problem. If not i will be mourning.
Thanks

Yes, that is normal for continuity on caps (I assume you mean barrel shaped capacitors), they’ll have some resistance though.
Plus without them off the PCB you’re also measuring wherever they connect to as well so it’s not an ideal way to check anything.
W25Q128FV (UH4) is the BIOS chip, UT2 would be EC/KBC FW probably, and the other two near graphics are probably it’s vBIOS
So you were correct, all chips that hold FW on here are Winbond
For W25Q128FV, use Colibri (included below) or ASProgrammer
http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?fil…213094641136166
What do yo mean with uh4 and UT2? Already downloaded all files, tomorrow programmer will arrive. So i should use it with the chip that says W25Q128FV 1708 right? After reading the chip what should i check in order to identify if bios is corrupted? I will follow the guide till veryfing bios and making a backup.
Hi guys,
Did a BIOS update and my system went kaput! Tried to update BIOS with the latest on the site! Used to have 1.0.5 I think.
Used a CH341a device and 1.18a version of the software.
I’ve uploaded my bios file, I’d appreciate any advice! Thank you!
Edit: CPU is an i7 7700 Kaby Lake
chip dumped is 25q128fvsq
alienware15r316mb.zip (4.98 MB)
@pepebmx - It’s what the chips are labelled as on the PCB, their location marker. Yes, W25Q128FV, connect to that and read then verify, then save ONLY. Do not erase or write, or use auto
Send file to me, I’ll let you know and fix etc.
@NathanielGardner - See my comments above at post #64 for that chip ID, 1.18 can fail on write sometimes, best to use Colibri for this chip as it’s been confirmed by several people to read and write properly to that chip (or ASProgrammer may work for write as well)
Dump again with Colibri, then I can fix for you. If I cannot fix current version in your dump, what BIOS version do you want to be on, and do you want unlocked BIOS menus?
Thank you for your help Lost_N_BIOS.
I dumped with colibiri now.
I would like 1.9.0 if at all possible. If not, any version that would work with my laptop is ok! Edit: Not sure if you already started on this, but if it would be possible to get voltage control that would be great. (if not no big deal)
Edit: My laptop is producing 7 beeps and the light codes for bios recovery, did anyone else have this issue???
alienware15r316mb - colibiri.zip (4.98 MB)
Mine used to do occasionally 7 beeps before this new problem. Now it doesnt beep at all. Only lights. Mine Used to be in the latest bios too. I cant understand why BIOS bricked alone. I always thought BIOS bricked only when updating or rolling it to previous version.
What I find strange is that the machine is in recovery mode, yet Dell only supplies the recovery tool on their website to business customers. Strange to me that we have to take apart the whole machine to fix it!
Very sad. Dell works well when u have warranty. When u are out of warranty in argentina you are on your own. I believe that in those computers that are expensive if you realy dont want to worry it Is neccesary to pay extended warranty and forget about problems.
@NathanielGardner - what is your CPU? What do you mean your system is in recovery mode?
@pepebmx - Yes, BIOS usually only bricks when you flash it, but sometimes saving/changing a setting can randomly brick it, or a failed startup attempt possibly (very rare)
With windows updates in Win10 pushing out BIOS updates these days, probably lots of bricked systems due to that and people don’t even notice. I fixed lots of Asus BIOS for users in past year due to this alone.
i7 7700 kaby lake
The light codes are 3 blue, 3 red - meaning its looking for a recovery bios to load, but its not found. Dell will not provide the USB loader unless I am in warranty, which is silly since their BIOS upgrade broke it.
@NathanielGardner - What happens when you press and hold Ctrl+esc and turn it on?
Did you try this method - https://www.dell.com/community/Laptops-G…ook/m-p/4592578
And, what about this, here is the proper recovery method, have you already tried that (post 5739) - http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/…4#post-10665979
I can help you fix with programmer, but it may take us a few tries due to how these systems BIOS updates are pushed out and some have different BIOS or CPU, all using the same BIOS package that contains two different BIOS image
I assume that is how/why these brick so often, dumb of them to not just make two variant BIOS download pages!
Thanks for CPU model, I will work on BIOS for you to program now, but in meantime, try above method (especially last one, since that is correct way to recover and your system is giving the “Where is recovery image” LED error message.
* Edit - @NathanielGardner - OK, here is attempted fix BIOS package #1 - http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?fil…105799478410346
Test in following order -
1. alienware15r316mb-colibiri-FixVol1FDMECleanONLY << This has your original NVRAM x2 in place (May fail, may be OK?)
2. alienware15r316mb-colibiri-FixVol1FDMECleanONLY-StockNV1-WipeNV2 << This has all NVRAM Wiped, NV1 replaced with stock NVRAM only and NV2 wiped out
It “Looked” like only the main DXE BIOS volume was corrupted in your original dump, all remaining volumes except NVRAM were hex max to 1.9 stock BIOS.
So, I replaced the corrupted volume with stock one, unlocked FD, cleaned ME FW (left same version in case you did not want to update), and then did the NVRAM as noted above.
If #1 fails, #2 should work for sure
Dear lost and bios, readed with colibri, all it says is 000. I dont know how to proceed. The programmer in the guide looks quite diferent.
@pepebmx - reclip to be sure the clip is on there good, then also try dump with ASProgrammer 1.41.
Yes, all software look different, it’s OK. Be sure you are doing read, then verify, then only if verify OK then you save file.
Try with power cable and main battery attached too, if you are not already, then test with both removed. Some systems need one way or the other.
Will try with battery atached and power cable, should i attach cmos battery? ASProgrammer read 000 too. Will try again now.
-----------
It did actually with battery and power cable! Im using colibri but cant find the verify button, is it the one that says compare?
CMOS Battery should always be there. If both read 0000 for the entire file, even if verify, then something wrong (not clipped perfect, or needs power stuff added or removed etc)
Yes, compare = verify
YES! Here it goes, hope you can find something! https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-H4VYlg…iew?usp=sharing
THANKS A LOT!
@pepebmx - So, what was the initial 0000 issue, bad clip connection, or you needed to add/remove power/battery (if so, which)
Also, what software did you end up dumping with for future reference. Dump looks OK, and BIOS “at a glance” does not look corrupted or messed up, but that does not necessarily mean it’s not. Did you take apart/put back together and see if it was just something loose yet?
I will try to get this sorted for you tonight, if I can find any issue If not, I will just rebuild you a BIOS with stock NVRAM and all stock BIOS, with clean ME FW etc, and see if that works for you, if that does not then something else is wrong.
