Allow B0 stepping on Asus W621E Sage

@Lost_N_BIOS I was able to roll back to 6003, and I took a picture of the bios page that shows the CPUID info:

CPU-INFO-20200918_134327.jpg

Unfortunately, I was not able to follow Barbar’s steps to get it working. Here is a link to the 6201 bios from asus:

https://www.asus.com/us/Commercial-Serve…/HelpDesk_BIOS/ or specifically: https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/So…E-ASUS-6201.zip

if you could patch / add the micro code support, I would greatly appreciate it.

Best Regards,

Al

@Lost_N_BIOS , here is the screenshot from HWINFO with the info as well:

Please let me know if you need any additional information from me, in order to patch bios version 6201?

Best Regards,

Al

@ThatGuy2020 - Sorry for the delay! BIOS 6003 does not contain microcode for your CPU (what’s shown in BIOS image - 50653), so I’m not even sure how that is loaded and showing in your BIOS image!?!?

No-uCode-50653.png

But, here is 6201 mod with that specific version (01000146) of 50653 ucode inserted instead of latest 01000157 that I put into original 6201 mod
I doubt this will change anything, if 146 works then 157 should as well, so I suspect something in 6003 BIOS allows your CPU’s to function that has been removed or changed in 6201
https://ufile.io/p6lz3rgk

I do also see 3x instance of 53 06 05 in ME FW (only) of 6003, that is not in 6201, so you may need to downgrade ME FW via ME FW update tool or flash programmer if you have it, after flash of 6201 back down to version and exact one that is in 6003
I’m not sure if flashback will downgrade it while flashing in a BIOS. I’ve included secondary mod BIOS with the ME FW from 6003 to so you can test, but I doubt flashback will downgrade it (6003 version = 4.1.4.296 / 6201 ME FW version = 4.1.4.381)
It’s not about the ME FW version, but the actual content, I only mention version here so you can check and see what version is being used so you know if it downgraded or not.
You may need to use other known working CPU to be able to see/confirm if flashback downgraded the ME FW after you flash in the ME FW downgrade version, if issue CPU does not boot you should do this so you know if that specific ME FW got flashed in or not.

Since you have flashed 6201 before, and are now back on 6003, what ME FW doyou see when you check in BIOS or with HWINFO64?
If it’s 4.1.4.296 and not 4.1.4.381, then we know flashback does downgrade the ME FW when flashing back to older, so you should be set with the ME FW mod above, if this is the cause of the failure

@Lost_N_BIOS , GREAT NEWS, your 6201 patched version worked! I have noticed some changes between 6003 and 6201. I did not have to roll up back the ME Firmware either.
As for new features, I have to specifically research the Red Fish Bios option enabled / disabled feature. It is currently disabled.
Also, the current ME firmware seems to be working fine as well. I have attached two pictures for reference:

Thanks again for your assistance with this patch / bios update!

Best Regards,

Al

@ThatGuy2020 - Great to see it, thanks for quick test and report back! You’re welcome!!
Red Fish BIOS option? If this is a BIOS setting, and it’s hidden from you? If so, I can change the default for you if you need it enabled, or maybe make it visible to you too.
I wonder why 146 microcode works, but not 157? And I wonder what one in between is the latest you can use?
I also still wonder where 146 is in 6003 BIOS, I don’t see it at all, searched a few ways, so not sure how that was loading in your 6003 tests?!?

Hello,

i have a problem and i cannot download the bios 6201 from page 27. Is there another way to do this? This page does not open for me. And on this occasion I have another question ^^ I still have DDR4 no ecc from gskill there. (Aegis F4-3000C 16S-8GISB) Can I use this with the c621e sage? At the moment this is not possible.
Thanks in advance.
----------------------

And I have one more question. I have the ql1k cpu (8160) is it possible that it also runs in turbo mode? At the moment it runs with me at 2.2ghz (multiplier 22x). As soon as I want something oc, the mainboard no longer boots. In the link this apparently runs with 3ghz. I hope I don’t break the rules … I’m new here and I hope someone can help me.

@Durni - What free file hosts can you download from? Ohh! Yes, right now tinyupload is down They’ve been having issues for a week, I have added a few mirrors now, if you cannot download from those sites let me know
Sorry, not sure on the memory as I do not have this board. I assume you do not have to use ECC memory, but I could be wrong?

You will have to adjust settings to get higher multiplier, @Morockin asked about this and figured it out in past 2-3 pages, read back a page or two and you’ll see, or you can ask them directly.

@Lost_N_BIOS I could download the last link but that for thatguy2020 and a 50653 or can I take this file too?

@Morockin which settings have you made where so that only individual cores go up to speed? In the bios?

@Durni - I thought you meant BIOS at post #405 on page #27, I added new mirrors there.
You do not need to use BIOS I made for thatguy2020, he had other odd CPU’s. Your CPU QL1K’s have already been confirmed working with BIOS from post #405 by several members

@Lost_N_BIOS Thank you very much !! Now it worked with the download!

@Durni - You’re welcome! Enjoy your new BIOS

@Lost_N_BIOS - I read that you know a bit about >> SPD << “Thaiphoon Burner” & “CPU-Z” Don’t detect any MEMORY MODULE … Is this related to the windows OS (and would it work with Linux) or do I have to look at modding the Bios. !!! >> Still using the Asus W621E Sage <<

@Airo - I’ve never seen such an issue, did you check all slots in both Taiphoon and CPU-z dropout menu’s? Sorry, I don’t know if either have Linux versions, you’d have to check their download pages.
If you paid for Taiphoon Burner and wanted to edit SPD, then it’s probably best to dump the SPD and edit it from one module on another machine to test your changes, then once all OK you could flash the rest on that same system.

I’ve never seen this happen, so maybe could be an OS issue, test a clean install on spare drive and see if same still happens.
Was this always the case, especially about CPU-z and SPD tab? If so, I wonder why no other SAGE users have mentioned before?

@Lost_N_BIOS - I am trying to get my CPU - Xeon ES Gold 6130 - QL1M to work, but I am not successful. I do have 6 RAM Modules of the following type - Samsung M393A4K40BB1 - DDR4-2400 MHz (PC4-19200). They are in the RAM QVL list of ASUS. Whenever I put anyone of them in the memory slot A of the first CPU - I end-up with "bb" memory error code.

Do you think this indicates that they are all faulty ? Or are they not compatible with the CPU - which is listed as max DDR4-2666 MHz. But I thought one can always use slower DRAM Modules - correct ?

Whenever I try and start the board with a CPU only - I am getting "b0" code.

I did try both modified BIOS-es (5503 and 6201) - the outcome is the same. Any ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance.

P.S The more I think about this - the more I am wondering if the BIOS update went OK. Is there a way to check if the actual BIOS is really the modded one and not the ASUS factory one ?

@Lost_N_BIOS - SPD reading/writing is not supported on the Intel Core X-series Processor Family (Skylake-X) due to a lack of the necessary "Intel® Core X-series processor family Datasheet Volume 2" document.

Could there be any way to fidle with the memory cas latency?

@fallen2109 - Read through this thread, and or google search, about that memory, it may not be compatible? I don’t have these boards, so I can’t really help too much.
Try a single stick in the correct slot and see if that helps. Also, try clear CMOS first, then let it reboot a time or two by itself, if it will.
Memory speed would not be the issue, just compatibility is all really, it can run faster or slower than spec anyway (The board, and or the memory itself)

If you flash in the mod BIOS via USB Flashback, that you downloaded here, then the mod BIOS is in there and not stock BIOS. Does USB Flashback look like it’s working properly when you flash in the mod BIOS?
It should flash LED of button and or USB blinking faster and faster for a minute or two, then it will stop and remain on or off (can’t remember which).
If it only flashes once or twice, or for a few seconds, or remains on/off only and no 1-2 minute of flashing LED’s then it’s not working and you need to find other compatible USB Stick.

@Airo - You could flash SPD on another board. Did you edit the BIOS to disable the SPD Flash block, SPD Write Disable, it’s usually enabled? I see it at >> Platform Configuration >> PCH Configuration >> PCH DFX Configuration (Enabled by default, so blocking SPD writes)
Can you see Socket Configuration? >> Memory Configuration >> Memory Timings Override << If you can see “Socket Config” but not other submenus, we can make visible, CAS setting is in there.

If you just want to change CAS only, and can’t see either of the Root menu areas I mentioned above, then I could replace something with CAS setting for you if you wanted?
Unless you know how to do that already? If not, I can do for you, but it will take some time to do, and you will need to tell me some setting you don’t currently change or care about (I will leave it at default, just replace it)

@Lost_N_BIOS - Unfortunately all these bios setting you mention are missing. If you have any ideas on how to change CAS timings that would be great, below some info…

Here’s a site that has all the ASUS WS C621E SAGE BIOS Screenshots
https://www.pugetsystems.com/parts/bios_…621E-SAGE-12494

The SPD is programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR4-2666 timing of 19-19-19
The modules I use are Micron >> MTA18ASF2G72PDZ-2G9 <<

Would be awesome to lower the CAS timings, preferable in a flexible manner.

Most of the settings to achieve good overclock results are missing in the bios but still Asus sells this board with the following slogan >> ASUS WS C621E SAGE breaks performance barriers, giving you the capability to overclock dual Xeon CPUs. With its unique BIOS mechanism, dedicated to boosting CPU performance, WS C621E SAGE can deliver incredible system speed. << Feels as a half done product…

@Airo - So you cannot see >> Can you see Socket Configuration, at all??
Sorry, the site you linked is too many images, I need to see Main/whatever shows ALL the tabs/sections across the top

* Edit, never mind, first image was perfect! I see Socket config! Show me what you see directly inside there, root “Socket Config”
* Edit - Never mind, I found there, working on BIOS for you You already have Socket Config >> Memory Config, just need the added submenu inside there

* Edit - @Airo - Here, please test, and also let me know if you can’t see “XMP Profiles” option below “XMP Profiles Supported” If you can’t, I will do new edit to reveal one of them always
There is a few, below it, suppressed by the “XMP Profiles Supported” setting options, so I left them alone, and assume based on what you set there you will be able to see one of them
Anyway, you should now see memory timings (large swath of them) at Socket Config >> Memory Configuration >> Memory Timings Override
Flash via USB Flashback, this is just latest 6102 BIOS I did few pages back + these changes - http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?fil…230627068481174 << NEW LINK 6201

@Lost_N_BIOS are you able to open the SAGE’s BIOS cap files in AMIBCP? I get the infamous “Language name present in ROM exceeds 0x08 in length.” error if I try it with any of the files uploaded here.

@malucul - Not sure, I will check
* Edit - Yes, but only if you use version 5.02.0031
