Asus N551JK Laptop - which Intel ME Firmware and Drivers?

Hi Guys,

I have a Asus N551JK Laptop With Intel HM86 Express Chipset and Intel Core i7 4710HQ Processor What is the Latest Intel Management Engine Firmware and Drivers I could Install and if someone could provide a link to them it would be great. Also a link to the latest Intel Management Engine utility to be able to check the Intel Management Engine firmware version etc would be great. Thanks in advance.

EDIT by Fernando: Thread title shortened

Better start HERE dont u think? Did u search anything related to it or just bumped here with a question without even look in forum main topics.

I looked and even tried some utilities to try and detect the ME Firmware I have now, but all the ones I tried always said it’s not supported. I’m kind of lost.

HWinfo will tell you or a full dump of the SPI, later used in ME Analyser/UEFITool/MEinfo.
Also it uses MEI 9.5, so get the Intel ME System Tools v9.5 r6 - (2018-07-31) For 8-series systems which run ME v9.5 and read usage of the tools.

If u looked…in Asus web page from this model, under Win8.1x64 is posted the driver Version V9.5.14.1724
Be warned that Asus bios update files from this model do not include ME firmware updates, as its NOT a full package update.
Do take to the latest version of the oficial bios update and then BY UR RISK only, can try to level up to latest ME Firmware 9.5

As usual due to some operations engaged and any danger adverted form it, a full backup of the current system SPI BIOS is advisable, if possible with a SPI programmer.
Any other issues/troubleshooting, please post some help in the appropriate topic.
Good luck.

Ok I updated my system to the latest official bios. Now I have to figure out how to update the Intel Management Firmware. I see above the one you recommended, but is it possible I could use Intel ME System Tools v10.0 r8 - (2020-10-17)? reason I ask is because it also says its For 8-series systems which run ME v10.0.

I also read the instructions about the tools in the package you recommended above, but I’m still confused on how to update it. Like for example when I try to run MEinfo WIN64 in Windows 10 64-bit I get Error 9458: Unsupported ME Firmware Version 9.0.31.1487 H. Not sure why I’m getting that if this is the correct package for my machine?

Then on the post above of the package you recommended I also see these packages…

Intel ME 9.5 1.5MB Firmware v9.5.60.1952
For 8-series systems which run ME 1.5MB v9.5
Intel ME 9.5 5MB Firmware v9.5.65.3000
For 8-series systems which run ME 5MB v9.5

Just to add to my confusion.

Could anyone help me out please? Not sure if its intentional or what, but I work in information technology and I cant even make heads or tails of updating the Intel ME Firmware using these tools as the instructions are very poorly written. They were written for someone that already knows how to do it or has done it before. Like all the tools I click on will not even run. for example when I try to run MEinfo WIN64 in Windows 10 64-bit I get Error 9458: Unsupported ME Firmware Version 9.0.31.1487 H. The flash tools and all others do the same thing. Am I supposed to run the tools in DOS? am I supposed to be creating an EFI DOS Boot USB stick and running them from there? like seriously the instructions stink. If anyone could help me please do.

Thanks

Use tools with version according to your ME version. Found a bios dump with ME 9.0, so this would possibly mean ME tools 9.1

I am in a similar position with an Asus X552V It shuts down but you can hear the fan still running, 5 seconds on the on off button is the only way to get it to switch off. It said it had 9.5 so i downloaded the tools ran them to get the info but they threw up an error. On the asus site for that machine it lists
chipset intel inf update driver as 9.3.0.1026
Intel management engine interface v8.1.0.1252, it had 9.5 on it so have downgraded but i didnt uninstall first. Fan still not stopping.
ran the 8.1 info tool:-

Hi,

I am using Intel ME System Tools v9.5 r6 and Intel ME Firmware v9.5.60.1952 (1.5MB) currently my system is on Intel ME Firmware v9.0. My system is a consumer (H) 1.5MB SKU. I believe I have the correct files, but yet I keep getting this error. I have a Asus N551JK Laptop With Intel HM86 Express Chipset and Intel Core i7 4710HQ Processor. My firmware/BIOS from Asus is fully up to date. I have also ran MEManuf and it says my current ME is working ok in green. Also HWINFO64 says its in normal working state and normal current operating state. Anyone know what’s going on here?

@sfernandes - Sounds like you are not using correct ME FW Update tool for current ME FW (9.0), and you also are not using correct ME FW file either. 9.1 is max you can use, but since your BIOS is still 9.0 it’s best to use latest 9.0.x version - see warning below
You need ME FW update tool from this package >> Intel ME System Tools v9.1 r7 - (2018-09-01)

And for best compatibility >> you need to use ME 9.0.x.xxxx FW >> Due to Warning (@ post #1 here)>>
Warning for 8-series systems: The 8-series desktop systems initially come with v9.0 firmware. The latter is upgradeable to v9.1 firmware only if the OEM has updated the BIOS to be compatible as well.
If your BIOS is up to date and the firmware is still v9.0 then avoid updating to v9.1 but only to latter v9.0 releases. The system will not brick but, if the BIOS is not ready, you may face BCLK, fan control and other issues after which going back to v9.0 firmware is often difficult.
However, if your current 8-series system has firmware v9.1 (after a BIOS update) then you can update to the latest v9.1 firmware as provided below.

It worked. I did not care much about the disclaimer I went to the latest 9.1 and no problems. I’m typing on the system right now. question though for educational purposes because I’m trying to understand all this. now I’m on 9.1.40.1000 if it was possible to go to 9.5 from here would I use the 9.0/9.1 tools to flash to 9.5 firmware or would I have to use the 9.5 tools to flash to the 9.5 firmware?

@sfernandes - Great to hear, at least “No issues… so far” anyway
No, you cannot go to 9.5, stop while you are ahead

@stuboy Don’t mix things in a thread dedicated to a specific system, better to start your own thread.

Maybe ME is corrupted, clean it according to [Guide] Clean Dumped Intel Engine (CS)ME/(CS)TXE Regions with Data Initialization. Possibly necessary to unlock the Flash Descriptor to get access to the ME region of your bios- see [Guide] Unlock Intel Flash Descriptor Read/Write Access Permissions for SPI Servicing

Sorry wasn’t trying to thread hijack thought the two problems would have the same solution, will try what you mentioned and start another thread if i need any more help

Im sorry to hear that…can i suggest u leave IT area and choose another path…seems that u dont have vocation for it.

@Lost_N_BIOS - On Asus web page for this model they have ME driver Version V9.5.14.1724 also Asus bios update files from this model do not include ME firmware updates. Because they have ME driver Version V9.5.14.1724 listed for this model on their site does that mean I could flash the ME firmware to 9.5? why do they have the driver if its not supported?

Also am I to be using the ME driver for the ME firmware I have like for example I’m now on 9.1 should I be using a 9.1 driver or it doesn’t matter if I have a much newer driver installed? I have a version 11 driver installed. I did not install it. it either was installed by the OS or through windows updates.

I don’t really care if I mess up the system really, I just want to try and push as far as I could go. If I could go to 9.5 it would be great. I have been told it’s possible. the firmware I have on the BIOS is the original Asus one that was released in 2019, so possibly the bios is ready for 9.5, not sure, but I would like to give it a go. Right now I’m on ME firmware 9.1 and originally it was on 9.0 what is the correct tool version to use to go from what i have now 9.1 to try to go to 9.5?

“Solution” in new thread Error 8704: Firmware update operation not initiated due to a SKU mismatch

May I suggest that you go fuck yourself Mr. kind helpful sir. Its because I’m an IT professional that I figured pretty much everything out on my own. PowerShell commands and all. These guides that are listed are crap. If your not well versed in computers you could never figure it out using them. Only thing I got help on was that I had to use the tools for the ME I’m currently on to step up to the next. As for you I suggest you shut your mouth and don’t give info that’s not helpful as the info you supplied me is bogus as I could not go to version 9.5 on this system max is 9.1. I was told that, but since I could care less if I mess this system up I tried it and it will not even allow for it. I even tried to go to version 10 and it would not allow it either, so not sure why many people on here are afraid or give lots of cautions about ME flashing because to me it seems it will not take if it cant handle it at least on my system I could throw all the ME’s at it I want it will not write it.

@sfernandes - Sorry to see the rant, at least you put in in a spoiler I did not ban you, but whoever did I assume must have thought that belonged in a PM only, or kept to yourself.
Sorry to see such things! It probably started with this comment >> I did not care much about the disclaimer << Does not compute with being an IT Pro, nor does the comments about the ME FW update guides.
Those are explained in depth at a step by step level for anyone to absorb, and refined as clarification questions came in too. I’ve had questions on the info there sometimes too, but in such cases I asked in that thread and was quickly given reply with info/answers etc.

Anyway, if you’re still reading, here’s my reply to your question… ME Drivers do not have to match ME FW version.
In general, they might, before newer driver versions came out, such as your model having 9.5 drivers on the driver download page (from way back when this board was still modern)
My advice to you was 100% correct, you should have stayed on 9.0.xx FW, or you may run into various random issues later (if you don’t, great, you go lucky) You should not flash in ME FW 9.5, your BIOS will not work properly with it.
There is no point to “Push it” on ME FW, and if you corrupt ME FW or program in some non-compatible version you will be stuck possibly without this motherboard until you get a flash programmer to be able to downgrade the ME FW again.
It’s possible to flash in whatever version you want, if you know how, but you WILL break the BIOS and possibly brick the board, need flash programmer to recover and use it again after that.

Please be kind, we’re all here trying to help each other
