@Datlore001 - Electric tape or Kapton (polyimide) - I would advise against trying to selectively pull/break pins from the socket for many reasons.
@HOPSI i gived it then up on my maximus ix code and got a z390 board. but this time not an asus board because they was to expensive so i got an aorus master z390. i love the board but the bios is crap. when i have time i try again on my ix code but with an 8700k
Hello,
i am trying to update my CPU from a i7-7700k to a i9 9900k on an asrock z170 gaming k4/d3.
First thing a want to do is to dump my bios and so with fpt.
Problem:
with the command fptw64 -d bios.bin i get following error.
Error 318: The host CPU does not have read access to the target flash area. To enable read access for this operation you must modify the descriptor settings to give host access to this region.
FPT Operation Failed.
So my first step is to trying to get rid of the ME lock.
I tried following: [GUIDE] Coffee Lake CPUs on Skylake and Kaby Lake motherboards (8)
Seems not working for me.
Maybe someone can extract me the bios.rom from asrock: https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Fatal1ty…ng%20K4D3/#BIOS
i have the version 7.10.
i appreciate any help.
You will need programmer anyway @infifi to write back in the modified FD region, order CH341A now (And SOIC8 test clip cable if BIOS soldered to board). Or you can pinmod the board to unclock FD, then dump entire BIOS, unlock the FD in this dump, redo the mods to the dumped BIOS, then flash it back via FPT
Pinmod info is here in section “E.1” [Guide] Unlock Intel Flash Descriptor Read/Write Access Permissions for SPI Servicing
There are ways around re-writing the locked ME region, and you can dump just BIOS region via FPT (fptw -bios -d file.bin), but you need to flash all regions anyway for this mod so you need unlocked FD either via pinmod or via flash programmer.
SUCCESS!
I can add another board to the “9900K works list”: Asus Maximus VIII Ranger (Hero and Gene are almost identical and should work as well)
I will have to manually adjust clocks and voltages (auto runs at 1.37 V and 2.8 GHz under full load), but the system has no mastered both transient and high loads (Prime95 28.5 smallFFT) without a glitch.
Tools used were CoffeeTime 0.7p, an SPI Flasher to circumvent region locks and CH134A 1.31free (“1.4”) software. While the region unlock worked only partialy (CoffeeTime does still report locks in UEFI dump), the first SPI flash was good enough to only require the board’s flashback+ for further tries. And tries there were: UEFI 3802 will not work, no matter how you mod it. 3201 likewise does reach UEFI splash screen, but does either freeze or restart before POST proper when installing CFL CPU. SKL however works with modified 3802 and 3201, so the problem is most likely caused by auto settings (voltages too low?) and not by incompabilities. What you wanna go for instead ist UEFI 2202.
Due to old IME, 2202 is not supported by CoffeeTime autoupdate, but you can apply all mods separately and select your own microcodes in advanced mode. I had to apply ACPI and CPUMPPEI mod twice each, so double check your mod by closing CoffeeTime and reopening the file. Transfer of S/N from existing dump of standard UEFI 3802 likewise crashed every single time, so I went the long way:
- Install regular 3802 using standard UEFI-options
- dump this UEFI
- Mod the dump using CoffeeTime0.7p (=> you now have 3802 with CFL options and your MAC & S/N)
- Flash this mod using SPI flasher. (Your system will still not start with 9900K due to 3802.)
- Mod 2202 using CoffeeTime0.7p. (It will complain about old IME and force you to manually apply every single option, but it will work – and your board already has the correct IME from previous 3802 flashing)
- install modded 2202 using flashback. This will update most UEFI without any security or downgrade checks, but leave MAC, S/N, and so on.
- enjoy your 9900K on one of the best buys of 2015
Can u give bios for Ranger my friend?
i got 9900k but cant use bios, thx!
@PCGH_Torsten - send me a copy of your final mod BIOS file, I will remove all the locks for you and then you can reflash if you want, I bet it’s referring to “BIOS Lock or SMI Lock”, since FD unlock is fairly simply and if programmed in using programmer can’t really fail, so I doubt that’s the locks it’s reporting.
If you want to be 100% sure, dump the currently used mod BIOS with programmer or FPTw -d bios.bin (if FD not unlocked this will fail or dump smaller/partial BIOS) and send me the file, that way I can see if unlocked FD is actually programmed in, or if it’s referring to the BIOS/SMI locks I mentioned.
Excuse me, I write with the help of Google translator. I have a bootloop on the asus z170 pro gaming board.
Z170-PRO-GAMING/
Here is the bios I was flashing with the help of the programmer with I7 8700 support.
ModBios
@Sheifer : Both 3802 image (for SPI flash. Do not forget to add you MAC before flashing!) and 2202 (for subsequent flashback) can be found here http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?fil…936333764895937
@Lost_N_BIOS : I uploaded a dump in CH134A thread. I do not need an improved image as I got a working system now (and my image is region unlocked anyway according to CoffeeTime, see upload for Sheifer), but I would be interested in your analysis regarding locks present/not present.
@Iz_SaldbI : What UEFI did you use? Z170 Pro Gaming is related to Maximus VIII Ranger and Z170 Sabertooth, so perhaps you have the same issue I got when using 3802. Try to mod UEFI 2202, it worked for me twice.
thx! i get 2202 modified, but want 3802 thx once more
@PCGH_Torsten : Once I managed to launch my i7 8700 on a modified BIOS version 2003, everything was in order. but on the next boot uefi demanded an update and did not allow to exit without an update. I was helped by the author of CoffeeTime and now I have version 3805, but the processor runs on 6 cores / 6 threads.
I have no issues on reboots with my 3802=>2202 sequence. @svarmod mentioned though, that new Asus UEFI have problems with more than 8 threads due to module which is not present in 2202. Sadly with 9900K 3802 does not live long enough to disable HT, so I cannot say wether 8 threads / a 9700K would work. 9900K needs 2202 downgrade for now. (8700 with HT enabled probably as well)
Has anyone managed to get i5 8400/i7 8700 working on MSI Gaming M7 Z170 or Asus Z270 Prime-a? Is there any problem with Coffee Lake mod on MSI boards?
Should a Pentium G5600 work without modification on a board modded to accept the i3 8100/8350k?
My dear friend , i got it. All work great . Can i tell u if u block only 2 pins =work one slot of ddr4 , if u block 5 slot = work will fine all slot. I tested asus m8r .
sry for my english.
@sheifer hello bro, I’m using mainboard giga z170x gaming 5. And i wanna try to run g5400, i5 8400 without block cpu pin. Will my mobo, cpu not have broken? If fail i can try again but im affraid for my hardware.
And anyone could tell me, what exact G5400, i5 8400 should be connect and isolate in my mainboard z170x gaming 5?
A friend of mine! I experimented with 9900k, it was also scary. If you isolate the contacts correctly according to the table, then the worst that can happen is that the motherboard does not start because the problem will be in bios. I had a start from the fourth time. We must stock up on patience. The instruction is above, also use the program Coffee time. i only know how use asus maximus 8 , i dont use giga. u get U0 mod. u need isolate some pin. see here
[TOOL] Easy automated Mod tool for Coffee Lake bios
anyone tried 9900K on asus strix gaming z270f ?
could you help me explain more this step and what process to do that . i have file bios .BIN from topic ’ tool automatic mod bios coffe lake ’ so it can work or no . sorry im speak english not good
Why does CPU-Z only show 8C / 8T and not 8C / 16T? Is it possible to run with HT enabled?
