[Guide] CoffeeLake CPUs on Skylake and KabyLake mainboards

@Spongyi page 50

Thanks for the tips, I am curious what happens if you try to do the Coffeelake mod on a newer bios version than 2202 - it doesn’t work?
Just trying to work out what is special about this older bios version, and whether it is possible to use the most recent bios version for the i9-9900k mod.
For i5-8600k there are no problems when modding latest bios versions from Asus website with Coffeetime for both M8I and M8F - just trying to determine why it would be different for i9-9900k.

Our motherboard is different. Is this bios good for it?

@mtothaj
Patch of CpuMpPei module is responsible for number of initialized threads (8 at default). For some ASUS boards this modified module works correct (e.g. Maximus VIII series), but for others it doesn’t (e.g. Sabertooth, Z170iProGaming). If this module doesn’t exist in bios (bios below 3000 version at most of 100-serie boards), then even 16-threads cpu works without problems. This trick described in CoffeeTime.

@Spongyi
Just make mod bios for your board with CoffeeTime and flash it through FPT. No any problems expected.

@svarmod thanks so much for posting the GA-Z170-HD3-DDR3 BIOS a few pages back. I flashed it and can confirm my i3 8350k is working without issues. I’m running it at 4.5ghz but will try to push it higher with a new heatsink/fan. I only wish the Gigabyte boards didn’t require mods to so many pins, otherwise I’d go to a 6-core.

@Datlore001 You are welcome.
If not all noticed pins will be isolated, then it can damage board’s VRM.
Also, you can physically remove all required pins in socket directly.
And keep in mind, there is weak VRM on this board, so overclocked 6-core easily overheat it over 100c.

Hello Guys I am new in this forum but I like learn
Hey someone has moded bios for Asrock Fatal1ty Z170 Gaming K4/D3 DDR3 ?

I plan to install 8700K. It’s possible?

thank

@tea-of-pear
Definitely yes. Use CoffeeTime for bios modification and flash full image with SPI programmer or any other equivalent method.

Hi fellow modders.
I was never really into modding and hardcore overclocking, but recently my Z370 board that I was using with the 9900k CPU died. I just couldn’t get any high quality replacement motherboard in my country (delivery time around 10 working days), so I just looked for some tips on the internet. About 6 months ago I heard that there is a possibility of using Coffee Lake procesors on Z170/Z270 motherboards.
As I’m working for the Slovenian tech site, I had some spare Z170, Z270 lying around and I just needed some guidance to start with my little project. I was choosing between the Asus Gene VIII, MSI VIII, MSI Gaming M7, Asus prime z270-a and AsRock Z170 Fatality K6. I went with Gene VIII, because I just love the m-atx format.

So I have followed the instructions (taped over 5 pins and used a pencil to make a connection between 6-3 and 7-3, which managed to get 9900k to boot into windows. It works reasonably well, but it’s stuck at 3,6GHz. Also stock voltage is high at 1,48V. I have changed the voltage in bios to 1.0V, but I cant overclock neither change most of the settings. Processor would not enter boost state and auto voltage is very high at almost 1.5V. I have lowered it manualy to 1.0V.
Any sugestions on how to fix boost states and »locked settings«? They are not truly locked, but when changed nothing happens (changes are ignored) or the system simply wont boot.

Thanks
D.

@HOPSI
You just didn’t modify ACPI tables for 8+ cores. Do it with CoffeeTime (even if not patched all) or Revlaay’s AIO tool and issues should gone.
To correct CPU voltage in auto try to adjust AC/DC Loadline params.

Someone have a maximius ix code or formula bios for the 9900k? Can be a ix formula bios too since the code is the same mainboard only without waterblock. In some hours i get my 9900k and i want zo see if i can get it running on my ix code. When it dont runs then i need to get a z370/390 board

Dear @svarmod , i already success when run i3 8100, g4900 on my mainboard Z170x gaming 5, and also msi h110 pro vd for my friend.
But, today i try with my brother’s pc (msi b250m gaming pro) it’s not well.

When i run flash programming tool by “Open windows powershell as admintrastor”, something will wrong. It say:
"Error 201: [FPTw64.exe] cannot be run on the current platform.
Please contact your vendor."

I try to read this thread (Help Wrong version update of Intel ME need to update back the good one) but my english is not good. I don’t know how to fix it, or use another flash tool. Can you help me, please!

@svarmod I tried to modify the ACPI tables with Revlaay’s tool and it worked. With CoffeeTime however I’m getting errors all the time. It says it finishes the process succesfully, but if I reloaded the same bios image, it finds it as unpatched.

So, the problem still persist. However, I had some progress and now the CPU is entering c-states and is not stuck at 3.60GHz but goes to idle clocks when needed. In idle CPU-Z sometimes shows jumps up to 4.7GHz boost - usually around 3.90/4.00GHz, but as soon as I run an intensive task as Cinebench or a game, cpu can’t even stay at 3.6GHz and the frequency is jumping between 3.60Ghz and 3.30GHz.
Results are similar with a score of around 1500 in Cinebench. Most BIOS settings still can’t be changed - core multiplier for example.

BIOS Asus Maximus Gene VIII

Hi Everyone. I’m going to receive soon my QNTM Coffee Lake Xeon ES and the MSI B150M Pro-VD mobo and I’m currently trying to mod the bios in order to support this CPU. Until today I thought that I can just mod it through CoffeeTime, but now I found out that Xeons need a little bit more workaround. I’ve read that they require a Corporate ME version - is that true? (Those .bin files are 7 MB and the Consumer ME are ~1MB).
@svarmod do you have any idea how to run a U0 Xeon on this mobo?

Use Command Prompt

what pins did you taped? because i have a 9900k here and i cant get it to post. Mainboard powers on for half a second and then that was. i tryed on the maximus ix code and on the viii hero

Use Command Prompt

Thank bro. I will try

@geiti
I used more electrical tape than necessary, because it is easier to cover the pins with larger pieces. However, I have the same problem on AsRock Fatality k6 with 9900k. Motherboard wakes up for 1s, then I get code 00 and instant shutdown.

IMG_20190130_142637.jpg

00 after 0.5-1 sec is usually due to ME shutting down the system. In my case (VIII Ranger and Gaming K6) Z370 mod did not work, because corresponding UEFI regions were locked. Dump UEFI as is and check with CoffeeTime for this and other issues.
Wrong isolating/shorting should either result in system not powering on at all (<<0.5 sec) due to sktocc-mis or short tipping circuit protection. Or it results in powering on for intermediate time and starting to smell like burnt electronics :wink:

I have been thinking about modding an Asrock Z170 Pro 4s and a Gigabyte GA-H110M-A I have to accept an i5 8400. Aside from the BIOS mod, I know that two pins will need to be connected on the chips and then other pins blocked out. The Gigabyte appears to require a lots of pins be isolated. What kind of tape would be best to use, or would it be acceptable to just pull pins from the socket?
