HP Laptop 15 bs158sa: BIOS unlock and Fan control

Hello, the BIOS has been updated to the latest F52 version, it is very locked, I have repasted with Arctic MX4 and my temperatures are excellent with undervolt so I would like to push the graphics further and modify the memory timings to get better performance out of the integrated graphics.

Also I have downloaded NBFC and I have not been able to probe the ec to be able to know where my fan control is to even push the temperatures lower https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc/wiki/…C%27s-registers

I have upgraded it with dual channel ram and an ssd and it is a very good laptop but as it lacks dedicated graphics I really need an unlocked insydeh20 bios to be able to increase the igpu multiplier and tighten ram timings for better performance.

Thank you for your help.

Request bump @zr1971jp @Lost_N_BIOS

@Lost_N_BIOS What is this NBFC reading the EC? Can it help with my case?

@Brask - please edit your posts if you need to add more thoughts, questions etc, especially if no one has replied yet. Thank you
Also, bumping your thread physically puts you at the end of where I start answering posts (I use “Lastest Posts” as my homepage here, and start a few pages back on latest new posts that I haven’t replied to yet, so when you bump yourself to page one that’s back of my reply list.
However, others may be able to help you, so it’s up to you if you want to bump or not, but if you do, please wait at least a day so you don’t have a bunch of posts in same day replying to yourself on your own thread

To you both - @Hyppo - sorry, I have no clue what NBFC is, and I cannot help anyone with editing or reading EC FW (I have no clue, there is no common tools for this etc)

Brask - Link to the BIOS you are using would be most helpful, from HP not something you upload. Do you have a flash programmer? If you do, give me a dump of your BIOS chip.

Final note - I hate Insyde BIOS, so may not be able to help at all. If you are in a super hurry, best you ask for help at BIOS-mods forum, they are insyde editing pro’s (I am not)

What is your case? It is NoteBook Fan Control

The BIOS I have I don’t really know because in the setup.exe from hp there are 4 different bins, what intel tool I have to use to dump my bios? It is an intel 8th gen mobile, thank you.

Wow, I just said, please edit your posts if you want to add more info, thoughts, or other questions, especially if no one has replied yet. Additionally, there is really no need to quote anyone here, but I guess it’s Ok if you must
I said, link me to your BIOS, I will extract BIOS. As for your Family ID or model type etc, this is shown to you when you flash the BIOS, so flash it again if you cannot remember, then you should see it (if not, check flash logs)

Dumping your BIOS with software may be possible, but it wont help here, at least not with my main concern (bricked BIOS, RSA Signed BIOS etc) You need flash programmer (hardware) before you do anything here, otherwise you risk brick and not being able to recover.
Flash programmer (CH341A) + SOIC8 test clip with cable is $7 shipped slow, or more $$ shipper quicker, I suggest you get those in your hand before you ask anyone to do anything with your BIOS.

To dump your BIOS region, and maybe help find the family ID in there, we can do that with software, but proceeding with edits after that is 100% risk of brick, so I advise you get a programmer before you do anything else

Check BIOS main page and see if ME FW version is shown, if not then download HWINFO64 and on the large window on left side, expand motherboard and find ME area, inside that get the ME Firmware version.
Once you have that, go to this thread and in the section “C” download the matching ME System Tools Package (ie if ME FW version = 10.x get V10 package, if 9.0-9.1 get V9.1 package, if 9.5 or above get V9.5 package etc)
Intel Management Engine: Drivers, Firmware & System Tools

Once downloaded, inside you will find Flash Programming Tool folder, and inside that a Windows or Win/Win32 folder. Select that Win folder, hold shift and press right click, choose open command window here (Not power shell).
At the command prompt type the following command and send me the created file to modify >> FPTw.exe -bios -d biosreg.bin

Right after you do that, try to write back the BIOS Region dump and see if you get any error, if you do show me image of the command entered and the error given >> FPTw.exe -bios -f biosreg.bin
^^ This is important step, don’t forget ^^

If you are stuck on Win10 and cannot easily get command prompt, and method I mentioned above does not work for you, here is some links that should help
Or, copy all contents from the Flash Programming Tool \ DOS folder to the root of a USB Bootable disk and do the dump from DOS (FPT.exe -bios -d biosreg.bin)

Or here is simply registry edit that adds “Open command window here as Administrator” to the right click menu
Double-click to install, reboot after install may be required
