[Problem] Crazy Secure-boot on Gigabyte Z390 Master

So I have a Gigabyte Z390 Master Rev 1.0.

I’m using the latest bios F13f they supplied and I am getting some issues with secure boot.

First off, if I update the certs then revoke 2011 certs, if I then try to install windows via USB I get invalid signature.

I have a feature in secure boot called device guard. it removes the UEFI cert, its for Linux, but when I remove, on a restart the PC motherboard speaker beeps 5 time, I get no post screen then 5-10 seconds later I get the Linux login or windows login. only way to get the bios post or login to the bios was by comos reset, then when i go in secure boot if i try the same thing but adding what was removed the system gives me a security protection issue. then the system starts to act a bit mad, with loading, like when booting in to x system it would just boot to bios, a bios reflash fix’s it.

If I Just update the Windows bootmgr, cdboot and wdsmgfw SVN, that again causing issues.

I’m not sure what gigabyte are up to, but what would cause it, not being implemented correctly, or to much data for the nvram, any idea’s?

Edit by Fernando: Thread title customized

Why do you need a secure bot?
I don’t use it.

@Zaver its a feature most have enabled now.

So I done some more digging and well

The “Invalid Signature Detected” error occurs because a recent Windows Update forced a database change for Microsoft certificates (revoking old 2011 certificates and requiring new 2023 ones). When your Gigabyte motherboard has its updated Secure Boot policies active but lacks the matching updated factory keys stored in its NVRAM, it blocks Microsoft’s own brand-new Media Creation Tool boot files.(revoking old 2011 certificates and requiring new 2023 ones). When your Gigabyte motherboard has its updated Secure Boot policies active but lacks the matching updated factory keys stored in its NVRAM, it blocks Microsoft’s own brand-new Media Creation Tool boot files.

So is there anything i can do, I have forward some info to gigabyte, so manybe i’ll wait on them.

I used the Windows 11 ISO distribution, and there were no issues.
Gigabyte e-support sent me the BIOS on December 31, 2025.:slightly_smiling_face:

You more than likely don’t have it fully updated, if you go here.

Then download the SecureBoot-CA-2023-Updates.v2026.09.10.zip

unzip and run the Check-UEFI.bat

Link back what you get, I have

Hi.

Here is what I have.

There are some settings in the BIOS, but I don’t use them.

So it’s not fully updated, you can run the commands that it says at the bottom to update, yet you are missing a lot of certs, maybe you need to contact gigabyte and say can you update.

This is my defaults.

Then after updating.

if you dowload the file I have shared and the run Check UEFI PK, KEK, DB and DBX.cmd as a admin, I get this.

Also notice for the ms win production PCA 2011 revoke it true.

Secure-boot-test.zip (4.1 KB)

P.S if you want to update the SkuSiPolicy that is for VT you can used the file and run Update-UEFI.bat -SkuSiPolicy

to update secureboot certs you can run Update-UEFI.bat -revoke

Ні!

May I ask, why do I need this if everything is working and Secure Boot is disabled?

well some games like call of duty for instance need secure-boot enabled.

Microsoft is replacing its original 2011 Secure Boot certificates with new 2023 certificate because the old ones expire in June and October 2026

So unless you want to mess around, using rufus to bypass secure-boot or TPM then this will need to be done, in a way, to most pc’s running windows 11.

p.s you say secure boot is disabled, yet the program you run said secure boot was enabled, yet your bios pic showed disabled.

Also if you do update secure boot, i would make a new windows install usb via the media creation tool, to get working copy.

A temp work around if you get invalid, is to enroll the efi amend the windows install usb in the \efi\boot\bootx64.efi

or disable secure boot.

I turned it on just to test it, then turned it off. (disable)
I don’t play online games.
Thank you.

its not just for games, its for the general operations of the windows system.

There were no issues installing Windows 11 with Secure Boot disabled. And all updates are coming through. I didn’t use Rufus.

I have also noticed that too, where I have been messing around with secure boot, the only sign is some games and in the windows security, device security setting, secure boot is just not there how it is when its on. maybe its were they are doing these secure boot changes at the moment.

But If you do get any time to try the above, please report back, so I can then say its not just my gigabyte board with this issue, once the 2011 certs are revoked.

I think its the factory PK keys are not updated. some newer gigabyte boards have more keys.

@Zaver thanks for replying.

to reset just load secure boot, factory defaults.

Of course, I can give it a try.
I’ll let you know.

Now make a new windows 11 install USB using the windows media creation tool, then see if you can boot to the usb.

thanks

Yes, if Secure Boot is enabled, that message appears:

This happened when using the Media Creation Tool,
as well as when using the official ISO image.
If Secure Boot is disabled, everything installs normally.
However, this doesn’t concern me, since I don’t use Secure Boot.

Thank you, so it’s not just me

Can also just reload factory defaults. Also means it is more than likely the PK files.

Oh one last thing, in your bios picture, where it says device guard ready, if you click remove UEFI CA from DB, save and exit and then see what happens.

For me the pc went a bit nuts had to reset cosmos then secure boot would say security violation when trying to restore the UEFI dB. Had to reflash the bios.

  • Clicked “remove UEFI CA from DB” /
  • The PC wouldn’t enter the BIOS—there were 5 long beeps—but Windows booted up; it was as if the video adapter wasn’t working in the BIOS /
  • Reflashed using FPTW64 /
  • Keys reverted to factory defaults /
  • Enabled Secure Boot and started the Windows installation; everything installed excellent.
It all seems a bit suspicious.:upside_down_face:

@zaver Thank you for testing that for me, now I know its a bigger issue than just my board.

Same happen to me, with the beeps etc, yet that is designed for linx. Maybe where linx it’s not installed. But no post screen seems funny.

Not sure if you have good contact with gigabyte, if so could you report what you found to.

More that do, they may amit it and fix.

@Trebleta How should I describe the problem to them? I honestly don’t know…
Should I say that I updated the keys and the system started behaving strangely, but when I reverted to the factory keys, everything worked perfectly?
They wouldn’t even consider issues like that.
