Hi everyone Today i bought a bios locked asus rog ally off of the used market I also what to know if this is an indicator of board failure or something, someone in a reddit post said asus would have to replace the entire motherboard for $350,
i bought it for around ~$180 in usd in my country I want to know what are the steps to do in order to get it back up and running again I have decent knowledge with flashing the chip, ive bios modded my asus b560m plus wifi, but it was fairly easy because i had AMIBCP software available and i did not do any cleanup/much bios editing. Also did not really tamper with regions and overwrote the entire chip instead (Stupid i know)
My tools: Ch341a, and a 1.8v adapter Multimeter A laptop/computer Neoprogrammer as my chip flasher So far: Used https://boringboredom.github.io/UEFI-Editor/ but it got me only settings, I’m lost from here honestly My main knowledge gaps:
I don’t know exactly how to cleanup the bios/remove the password, in modern desktop when i forgot my asus b560m plus wifi password i just remove the cmos ::
Doesn’t seem that simple with this console though and i don’t really know much about bios structures/what may be keeping the password, i asked gpt and it said if i flash the bios file straight from the asus website, the password would remain in “NVRAM variables” and my options where to clear nvram region or replace with clean one I’m very curious to why i cant straight forward flash the normal file from asus Please let me know what tools i can use, videos/places to learn from and if anyone has done it before Would be grateful for any help, always happy to learn Thank you amazing community ::
Note:
The attached bios file is the normal default one from asus website, not my original bios
Thanks for the edit fernando
Hi, thank you so much for your reply, I’ve been at a dead end for days now
It’s currently at my friends house and I can pick it up by this Thursday and give you the bios first thing, but just to be sure the ch341a wiring/clip will work by default right? No need for custom soldering or anything
Also how do I backup my bios region seperatly, is there a tutorial on bios structures/names and prerequisite information I need to know
And maybe a tutorial to rebuild my own bios from corrupted one (eg copy serials mac address etc to a new clean bios)
Also I may have attached the wrong chip, the chip is 1.65v-1.8v and is actually
W74M25JW 256mbit
I’d also like to learn how it’s done if it’s not too much of an inconvenience for you
You can just back up the whole BIOS chip it’s not an issue. It should read fine without any custom soldering, just use a 1.8V adapter (supplying 3.3V directly could damage the chip)
Once done, locate the AMITSESetup blocks, there should be several (3+). You can post them as a TXT file, or simply upload the full backup and I’ll handle it
Update:
I messed up really badly. I didn’t have the proper adapter to read the bios chip contents so i tried desoldering the chip by using low temp solder, a ton of flux and a heat gun. It refused to budge and completly messed the board up with solder, When i got done cleaning it from the solder everywhere i’m pretty sure i knocked off a component or two at max and im afraid of even turning it on before checking what components they where/if there are any shorts. Do you have a board schematic or anywhere i can begin
update again, found whats missing, idk what it is though..
For now, let’s just solder thin wires between the chip (the exposed pads) and the programmer, it’s an easier approach, don’t you think? Or you can continue with the heat gun if you prefer. There’s also the other easiest option: getting a WSON8 probe/pogo adapter (Google this).
Hello
Thank you very much for your reply, i’ve been searching forever. Since I don’t have any small wires right now, I may order small wires or that pogo pin adapter, I found it on aliexpress, comes by may 1-6 which is ok, and the only wires I have on hand are arduino wires. i’m gonna keep looking in my scrap electronics and see if i find any useful resources to extract and write the bios. My only issue for now is that i may have fried some components while blasting the chip with heat and I don’t know how to check properly. If you have any resources or ideas that’d be nice. I really appreciate your help and patience throughout the whole topic really thank you a lot
A long time ago, I used to salvage coils from scrap electronics and reuse the thin insulated wires inside, you can try that if you have some spare boards lying around.
That said, TBH, I’d suggest waiting on that pogo adapter though (note that there are two versions: one for 5×6 WSON8 chips and another for 8×6 WSON8 chips)
As for the requested resources, you can find both the schematic and the boardview posted here on the BADCAPS forum, Good Luck!
UPDATE:
Setup:
Ch341a –> 1.8v adapter –> chip
Software neoprogrammer,
Verification error on address: 0x00000000, Device: 0xFD, Buffer: 0xFF
Verification error on address: 0x00000000, Device: 0x5F, Buffer: 0xFF
It keeps changing whenever i click verify again..
im on WSON8 6x8mm
I MADE A FEW BIOS READINGS BUT THEY ARE DIFFERENT EACH TIME , however they open fine in uefitool somehow
Possible problems ( I think):
That missing component i didn’t solder back yet (cant find from scrap boards )
-Voltage instability?:
gonna try adding ceramic capacitor, also watched a video of this guy bumping the voltage up from 1.8v to 2v and it worked, however my ch341 cant do that as far as I know
Doubt its poor wiring or a short, checked before applying
Well as long as we’re not writing anything to the chip (flashing a modified file on top of a corrupted original dump could brick the laptop) and only working with the corrupted reads (even if they differ each time) there shouldn’t be any issue, just send them over.
BROOO WHATT THE HECKKK HOW DID YOU DO THAT IN UNDER A MINIUTEEE
Also uhh what about the missing stuff on my board
is it safe to boot it in this conidition?
Also curious can i flash my edited bios
I used aptio v editor tool to unlock all settings, but this is stock bios from asus website, missing all regions prob. is that a safe flash?
And thank you soo much you made my entire year with this
You need to fix the issue first. Those resistors are important; check around the heat area since it wouldn’t have blown them far anyway. After that, just boot the laptop and use the password.
Furthermore, flashing that unlocked file would also make the laptop run, but you’d lose your Windows key and DMI information of course (Since it is stock unlocked).
Ok imma cleanup the board and find a replacement resistor, was it 10k or 0ohm resistor someone told me it was 10k, if its 0hm that’s pretty common in my scrap boards
As for windows keys eh i don’t use bitlocker anyway
You are a lifesaver man i cannot thank you enough
wish you the best in life
