[Problem] MSI X99 Krait Edition Bifurcation Issues / BSOD

Hey Win-Raid people,

I’m pretty unfamiliar with bios modding but decided to dive in after picking up some new storage hardware.

Currently I’m running a 5820k + x99 MSI Krait Edition, looking to split all PCI-E lanes and add-in additional drives as I go, have a 5960x on its way to add-in more lanes / drives; the only devices plugged into the PCIE slots is my 4 X NVME card (Aorus) and a 3070 for video out while testing.

Sofar I’ve been able to modify the N885V.N80 bios that my board is currently running, flash it to the first BIOS position and successfully POST.

In the stock BIOS I can detect one of the two NVME drives in the card.

My problems begin after POST throwing a BSOD while windows is loading, mirroring my bios configuration from the 2nd bank to the first does not change anything sadly. Both banks are running the same revision.

BSOD: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Flashing a fresh, unmodified BIOS to the first bank allows me to load into windows, which leads me to believe I’m fumbling somewhere.

I’m using AMIBCP 5.02.0031 to perform the modifications.

See attached screenshot showing the changed values, these were also changed in IIO 1, IIO 2 and IIO 3 for the highlighted port number to 4x4x4x4x.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Edit: attached screenshot is a different BIOS revision from earlier testing.

@kyesarri
I know this has dead awhile, but my problem is directly relevant to yours and I wanted to know if you ever got Bifurcation to work for your MSI X99a Krait edition board.

I’m running the same board, and have previously upgraded from my 5820k to a 6950x, and looking into affordable but fast storage options and NVME drives are really the best option.

Like you, I’d like to be able to get a couple NVME drives on an adapter in my spare 16x slot.
I either need to get the BIOS to support Bifurcation and buy a $35 card, or I need to spend $200 for a card that doesn’t require Bifurcation.

Start working yourself on it, the solution is not perfect and usually only one disk can boot an OS, others will stay as storage disks, that’s the “cost” of a cheap adapter vs BIF adapter on older chipsets.

Yeah I actually been running m.2 boot drive for several years and I use another m.2 in a single adaptor that use for my virtual machines.

Given the opportunity to save $200 with just a little bit of work, I have started looking into solving the issue myself, but naturally, since this person already has the exact same motherboard, I thought it worth the attempt to reach out to them.

Hey @Daveheart78 - never got it working, eventually migrated my setup to the z390 platform with some m.2 to 6x sata adaptors.

I could take a look at that platform again however I’ve gifted that exact board to a friend, I’ve got another board X99-WS/IPMI kicking around somewhere but looking at that would not be a current priority for me.

If you make any progress I’d love to hear back here about it - and if I do the same on the WS/IPMI board I’ll write back here too.

Best Regards

Hey Kyesarri, I appreciate the reply.

I’ve decided to pass on it.

Since I use that machine as a server that runs 11 other servers, I decided to be content with the stability I have, and not go messing around with the BIOS.

Just wanted to let you guys know that on Overclock user Dokt made a very nice modded bios for the MSI X99 Godlike that supports Bifurcation. He said that cross flashing could be possible on other MSI X99 boards. Of course thats risky as I have tried cross flashing once years ago and even though the board booted up features were missing. But its a nice mod he did.

Thanks David. Definitely worth a look.

If he got it working, then it’s certainly possible, and probably wouldn’t be too much more involved in comparing it with a stock x99 krait bios to see the changes that he implemented.

Well I flashed it onto my MSI X99A Godlike and it works as far as it not failing to post but have not tried bifurcation with his rom. Seems like he went into a lot of effort modifying custom menus. Here is his github: github.com/Dok-T/MS-7883/
