[Solved Problem] D3D11 Apps crash in Win8.1 with AMD iGPU

Hello I have been using @canonkong ‘s modified display driver in Windows 8.1. It works well but only in D3D9. D3D11 apps like discord, chrome, steam, crash on playing any video. They can run by only disabling hardware acceleration which makes everything laggy. Also when I’m trying to run a VM in full screen in VMWare with 3d acceleration enabled, makes the screen go black. However this doesn’t happen when 3d acceleration is turned off or the VM is not full screened with 3d acceleration enabled. So, if there is any fix, please tell me.

Solution with Guide:

First of all a huge thanks to Momi from Windows 7 extended kernel server, who is the one who provided the method for fixing this problem.

Windows 7/8.1 system on AMD Graphics crash on playing videos in browser or webapps like discord. So Here’s the solution:

  1. Install @canonkong ‘s AMD APU driver: [Solution] Win 7/Win8.1 x64 Ryzen APU Video driver

  2. After installing, download AMD Software 22.5.2 and extract it using 7zip (I will also provide the files here, gotten directly from it)

  3. Go to the extracted folder and paste the following path: \Packages\Drivers\Display\WT6A_INF\B379425

  4. From here copy amdxx64.dll to System32 and amdxx32.dll to SysWOW64.

  5. Also get 20.4.2 Windows 10 AMD driver, and go the same path, and copy atiumd6a.dll to System32 and atiumdva.dll to SysWOW64(Thanks @canonkong )

(I will also provide the files here, gotten directly from the official sources: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1iepG089MNWDzyEbEsqQvAEb4GP2lPrkl/view?usp=sharing)

  1. After doing all this, go to this registry path: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000

  2. From here double click D3DvendorName and replace the two instances of atidxx64.dll with amdxx64.dll and atidxx32.dll with amdxx32.dll

  3. Restart your Computer and it all should be fixed.

Hello again! A better solution has been found by @EAZYBLACK , which doesn’t disable d3d11 and also fixes the vmware problem

He provided this bat file(fixhw.bat) to fix the d3d11 apps crashing problem, without disabling d3d11, and also this dxgi.dll wrapper for fixing the vmware problem.(It has to be placed in C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\x64)

fixhw(copy into notepad and save as bat file):

@echo off
move /y “%SystemRoot%\system32\atiumd6a.dll” “%SystemRoot%\system32\atiumd6a._dll”
move /y “%SystemRoot%\system32\atiumd6a.cap” “%SystemRoot%\system32\atiumd6a._cap”
move /y “%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\atiumdva.dll” “%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\atiumdva._dll”
move /y “%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\atiumdva.cap” “%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\atiumdva._cap”

As we know,AMD official win7 driver can work on windows 8.1, but onec you use the driver version higher than 20.4.2 or 20.5.1,it can not work well(Driver drop and reload) if you open the website or open a videos.
To solve this problem, you can use the official Win7 22.6.1 driver and install it in the hardware manager. Then download the Win10 version 20.4.2 or 20.5.1 driver, extract atiumd6a.dll to replace the file with the same name in System32 of the C drive, and extract atiumdva.dll to replace the file with the same name in SysWOW64 of the C drive. This can perfectly solve the problem of drivers dropping when playing videos on web pages.

Thanks! I’ll try this fix and tell you the result.

Note that official 22.6.1 Windows 7 driver doesn’t have AMD vega 3 driver. So I will have to edit it in and install it in test mode. Is that gonna be ok?

doing some experiments with power/clocks on AMD APU..

win7 / 20.4.2 driver

valley bench upon exit result in similar short black screen hang and what appears to be driver reload (win7 theme switch to basic for a second or two)

what helps in my case to prevent the iGPU driver reload is disable C6 feature in BIOS

Ok I tried your fix. It did not work, unfortunately :frowning: .

But as I said before, official 22.6.1 Windows 7 driver doesn’t have AMD vega 3 driver. So I had to edit the driver in and install it in test mode.

This method didn’t work either.

I think I did it correctly.

Install my mod APU driver first, than relace the file from 20.4.2!

ok thanks!

Okay I tried your 21.11.1 APU and replaced the files you told from 20.4.2.

But the browser and discord still crash when playing videos, and vmware problem is also not fixed.

I am starting to think this problem might be due to bad direct x 11 codec in Windows 8.1.

Did you test your apu on Windows 8.1 btw?

nvm I solved it another way, abt which I will be making a post.

@WindowsByJoe
Congratulation for having solved your problem yourself and a big thankyou for having written a Guide about how the Apps crashings can be prevented. This will be very helpful for other users, which may be affected by the same problem.
Since it doesn’t make much sense to keep 2 threads about the same topic, I have moved your Guide into the initial post of this thread, which has been started by you a few days before.

If you should not agree with the customized title, feel free to change it by editing the first post.
Thanks again for your efforts!

@Fernando Please replace the original instructions with this, only leaving the link to the apu.

I can’t seem to update the original post.

Done!

Thank you so much!
