Unable to recover from "ME in recovery state" (even following the guide)

Hi!

after recovering a system months ago thanks to @plutomaniac ( Reviving dead Dell Workstations with bricked BIOS ) I suspected that some/most of the issues I had could be due to an engineering version of the xeon processor that was on the motherboard which has been replaced with a stock 2609. Still I don’t remember how to fix the ME recovery state issue after having to reflash the BIOS. Tried to follow the guie but something must be wrong (me? ).

Can anyone help? Attached a dump of the ROM (modified for NVME UEFI boot support).

Thanks!

Flash the stock SPI/BIOS image back and check if everything works. Try a “fptw64 -greset” as well via Flash Programming Tool. Obviously you also need to provide MEInfo -verbose and MEManuf -verbose results.

hey, sorry for not answering before but as Fernando created a new topic I didn’t receive notifications for answers

here’s what you asked; first with service jumper on…

what I did:
- HW write of a dump of T5600’s original ROMs (saved them from a factory new motherboard with no service tag). When I say HW=USB flash programmer phisically connected to the chips
- FPT flash of the T7600’s BIOS (extracted from dell update)
- Dell Update

greset

I see that apparently MAC addres for the management LOM is missing (there are 2 intels, one L and one LM).

Any suggestion on how to proceed? Thx!

MEInfo and MEManuf don’t work when the jumper is set. From the 2nd logs it is clear that the firmware is healthy but it has not been configured/provisioned for said system as can be seen from the “No valid OEM data, ICC not programmed” line. Sure enough, your second fix attempt proves that: “FPT flash of the T7600’s BIOS (extracted from dell update)”. The Dell HDR Engine firmware are almost always RGN and not EXTR so they cannot be flashed directly but are supposed to be used only via FWUpdate on systems that are already operating properly. Read “Firmware Regions (RGN/EXTR/FWU)” at section B of the ME thread to learn more.

What you need to do is take your old dump (hopefully before the aforementioned repair attempts, otherwise you’ll need to find an older dump or someone else’s) and follow the Engine CleanUp Guide. The resulting image can be then re-flashed via the programmer.

Thanks @plutomaniac , sounds like I know how to keep myself busy this weekend. I will use the dump from the T5600: not same machine but last year when you helped me recovering the BIOS i did an exact dump of it’s ROMs on the T7600 and it worked (after proper modding etc. etc.). But first I will have to print the guide to better concentrate on its content  Will keep you posted on the outcomes.

No chance: Don’t get why but the ME region on the brand new T5600 MB has a smaller size than the intel’s so FITC refuses to build the image once I swap the ME Region.bin

It works just fine. Follow the guide carefully and pick a proper firmware from the repository, as instructed.

Fernando, I know you’re the experts here but I swear:

ME Analyzer showh 5MB as firmware SKU.
As soon as I drag&drop the BIOS file in FITC, it extracts the modules and the size of ME Region.bin is 4,456,448 bytes. The corresponding file from repository (7.1.70.1198_5MB_PRD_EXTR) is 5,230,592 bytes.

When I open FITC for the second time and I try to save/build the image, I receive the following error:

fitc.PNG

Of course I’m not saying the instructions are wrong (I already succesfully used them last year) but there could be something else. Maybe the fact that I took the BIOS from a brand new motherboard still without service tag and in (Dell’s, not ME’s) manufacturing mode.

Iill try to flash that BIOS, get out of Dell’s manufacturing mode (ALT+F), enter a service TAG and redump-it… Maybe at that point getting out of MFG mode will have “initialized” the ME and made it use its entire memory region.

Alex

First of all I’m the only one replying here and neither my name nor my username is Fernando. If you had read the guide carefully you would have clearly seen that you must never pick EXTR firmware for the cleaning process, only RGN. Also, the WARNING document at the Flash Image Tool folder is there for a reason.
