Win10 Evo 1TB - Use IRST or native MS driver?

Hi

I have an ASUS P8Z77V systemboard & just rebuilt with a clean Win10 64 Pro install using just a 1TB EVO SSD & a WD 4TB 7K4000 for storage. I was going to RAID1 two 7K4000’s, but the Z77 has only 2 Intel SATA-6 ports so I didn’t bother as the others are SATA-3. (it has more ASMedia SATA-6 headers but I didn’t want to use them)
Haven’t installed any chipset drivers or Intel IRST software.
Drivers for SATA controller & both disks are showing the standard "Microsoft 21/06/2006 10.0.10586.0"
Magician benchmarks the EVO @ Seq Read:546 MB/s - Random Read IOPS:71516 /Seq Write:521MB/s & Random Write IOPS:60165
Magician benchmarks the WD @ Seq Read:93 MB/s Random Read IOPS: 930 / Seq Write: 111 MB/s & Random Write IOPS: 468
I formatted the 4TB 7K4000 as GPT but the SSD is MBR with a non UEFI boot. SATA is set to AHCI in BIOS.

Question: Is there any point in installing Intel IRST or drivers in single drive (Non RAID) config?
If so, what is the best version to use.

Thanks…

Hi, adi please use 512e instead of gpt which will allow use of more than 2.2 tb of space in mbr.

@ adi:
Welcome at Win-RAID Forum!

You should find it out yourself, but my own comparison tests done with my ASUS P8Z77-V running in AHCI mode indicated, that the Intel RST(e) driver v13.1.0.1058 WHQL was the best choice.

Happy New Year!

SSD is 1TB so no need… 4TB 7K4000 is GPT to see all the 4TB…

Haven’t got my head around the whole advanced format 512 4k thing… if MBR how can it see the full 4TB ???

Thanks

Hi

best by how much over native W10 driver?

Thanks…

The differences were noticeable.
It is generally better to use a specific driver, which has been developed by the maker of the related Controller Chip.

Hi

What sort of improvement did you notice as a % or MB/s improvement ?

Thanks

I don’t remember the exact scores, because I have given away my ASUS P8Z77-V already 1 year ago.
Why don’t you test it yourself? This will be very easy and much more meaningful for you than everything else.

Forum help is generally so that you don’t have to test for yourself, because someone has already done the legwork for you…

Anyway, installed the Intel IRST…Something strange now… for SSD MB/s are the same, but IOPS higher now 95496 / 87924

For 7K4000 though MB/s down to 36 & 49 !!!

The word “help” doesn’t hit the nail on the head, if someone is doing the complete work for someone else, who surely would be able to do it by its own.
Posts like yours let me doubt, that it was a good idea to do all the benchmark comparison tests, which I have layed down >here<.

Help hits the nail perfectly.

I don’t like installing and uninstalling software and drivers unnecessarily especially on a new build. Invariably there are remnants left behind that clog up the registry etc…

If someone has done the testing before and tested the exact same configuration as I have, why should I repeat it ? That is exactly what forum “help” is for, among other things…

I just joined this forum, but egotistical people like you put me off of this one. You obviously spend a lot of time here, as noted by your prompt responses, but you begrudge sharing simple information because they “can do it by its own” (“Can do it by themselves”, or “Can do it on their own” is the correct grammar. Have that free bit of English “help” on me).

Keep your comparison tests to yourself, I have no need for them.

Congratulations. You are the first **** I have encountered in 2016… Have a balloon…

Thank you for your compliment naming me "egotistical".
By the way: What have you done for the Forum community?
