[Guide] CoffeeLake CPUs on Skylake and KabyLake mainboards

@LOST_N_BIOS
THAT IS CORRECT.
Thank you sir

I am extremely impressed with all the testing you guys have done.

I have a Z270 board coming tomorrow. MSI Z270-A Pro, nothing special but not a piece of junk either. I am looking to pick up an 8600k/9600k or an 8700k tomorrow depending on price. Obviously the 8700k is most desirable.

@Lost_N_BIOS you seem to be a very helpful person, think you could help me with my BIOS? Iā€™d usually do it myself however time is tough with a new child. LOL. It would BE awesome if I could get you to do a BIOS mod on this board with 8th and 9th Gen ā€œSupportā€ and the PCI-E patch. To my understanding, I do not need to bridge any contacts on the bottom of the CPU as I donā€™t have an ASRock board? Correct?

Either way, I will insist on donating to you afterwards via PayPal. I personally wouldnā€™t ask for work modding a BIOS without paying you, Iā€™ve only had one other person mod a BIOS for me and he was paid for his time as well.

Very much appreciative of any answers you may have for me and also, taking my request into consideration. Cheers and thanks for reading!

edit

Just curious if there has been any luck with the 9600k on Z270 boards? I saw 9700k on Z170, I assume 9600k/9700k would work with a Z270 board as well using the same techniques. Again, thanks in advance for any answers people. I really appreciate the time taken to respond to me.

First time poster. Forgive me in advance!

I have an ASUS Z170-A and I would like to upgrade to an 8700k or perhaps a 9700k if possible please advise.
As far as I can tell through device manager I am using ME version 11.7.0.1014 (is that ok?).
My current bios is 3802.
It looks like the Coffee Lake i7-9700k uses 906EC revision 9E. Too bad I cannot use the bios modded for Shad0w59 but I think his ME version is different. (Correct me if I am wrong!!!)
I am not sure what the CPUID is for an 8700k, 906EA?
ATM I am using a 6700k so Kaby lake microcode could go if needed.
Lastly because I use an ASUS board I will need to run a PCI-E patcher after the initial bios flash? If someone would hold my hand an tell me more about this and where it could be dlā€™dā€¦ thank you!!

I am not on the level of you all on this forum and TBH I am out of place. I need help if someone is willing but if not I get it. Cheers!

z270 board arrived.

Decided on an 8700k. Picking that up tomorrow.

@Lost_N_BIOS Iā€™d still want Cannon Lake in there if thatā€™s cool. Let me know brother, cheers!

@nexxusty - there is a tool here linked below to do all this for you, I am helpful and mod BIOS all the time, but do not have these CPUā€™s so do not do this kind of modification normally. On those same lines, I cannot answer you about the CPU needing pins covered or not, youā€™ll need to do heavy research to be sure.
PCIE may or may not need patched, you only find that out as the last step of the modifications, in a live BIOS test. If you still get stuck after trying the tool below I can maybe help, but there is a lot of individual modifications that need to be done for these mods, so itā€™s time consuming
Decide which ME version you want, fix that ME, CPU microcodes, vBIOS + GOP, PCIE Patch sometimes, itā€™s a lot of mods, thatā€™s why tool below was invented. I only replied to mechwarrior about this because he needed microcode mod which is quick and easy
[TOOL] Easy automated Mod tool for Coffee Lake bios

@mechwarrior - here is 3802 BIOS with Sky (506E3) + 506E8 & Added 906EC + 906EA >> 506E1 + 906E9 removed (Stock ME version is 11.6.10.1196, I did not change this)
Make sure itā€™s booting with Sky CPU before testing other CPU, if not then I will need to modify for you with another version of UEFITool.

@ Lost_N_Bios
Thank you will test and report back.

first timer aswell. Iā€™d like to mod on an Asus Maximus 8 Gene. 8700k already at hand. would also test 9900k.
can someone provide me a proper Bios? @Lost_N_BIOS

Do it yourself my friend. Donā€™t bother the man when you can do it yourself very easily. That is the mistake I made.

I did the patching in 3 minutes, less actually. 3 minutes was what it took to gather it all.

Make sure you have this installed: https://wilenty.org/aio-runtime-libraries/

Or you will get an error at some point in the tools patching process. The tool is here (thx @Lost_N_BIOS ): [TOOL] Easy automated Mod tool for Coffee Lake bios

I want to limit the exposure of my noobiness as much as possible from people here.

Thanks for the link to the all-in-one tool @nexxusty. I ran it on my z170-a 3802 bios with no errors after I replaced MMTool with version 5.0.0.7. This should mean I am good to go, correct? Can I flash with EZ Flash? I am thinking of picking up an 8700k/9700k but I do have an 8400 to test with. Anything else I need to know?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Guys,

I got a brand new ASUS ROG Maximus IX Apex on sale at 125Euro  .I modded it also and now it Coffee lake cpu works ā€¦ kinda ( Personally i have one 8600K )
I followed this guide:
https://community.hwbot.org/topic/184577ā€¦ffee-lake-cpus/

My issue is that overclocking does not work at all for some reason unknown to me. In bios I set up cpu ratio , XMP to 3000 , voltages ā€¦ system boots but in windows XMP is to default 2133 and the processor is at 4100Mhz. When i get back into BIOS my settting are there also.

I tried just BIOSes that this bioses from the forum (publicly downloadable) , for the rest of them you need account on the forum but unfortunately forum registration does not work.
MAXIMUS-IX-APEX-ASUS-0084-mod2.ROM created bu Alex@Ro
MAXIMUS-IX-APEX-ASUS-0094-mod2.ROM created bu Alex@Ro

Anyone have an idea what could be the issue here ? and can someone that have forum access download the bioses and post them somewhere else?

@SlayeRC - did you check >> bugmenot.com ?

tried loading the bios in my asus current bios it says "its not a proper bios" and wont let me load it. I then tried to use bios flash back and it didnā€™t load??

@mechwarrior - Mod BIOS for Asus can only be flashed via USB Flashback, AFU or AI Suite, or via FPT using the method Iā€™ll link below (I made guide for this so I know it works).
Or you can always put on using a flash programmer (CH341A), which anyone doing these kind of Mod BIOS CPU hacks should have on hand anyway, especially since they only cost $2.50 on ebay and can be a lifesaver in an instant any time you brick a board

For USB Flashback, can you vefify your currently used USB Stick works for USB Flashback with the Asus Stock BIOS? Not all USB are compatible, so before you know there is a problem with the BIOS, you need to confirm you can USB Flashback a stock BIOS without issue.
Use one previous version older BIOS, so you can confirm the BIOS version changes after USB Flashback is done. Or you can tell by USB LED if your USB has LED, it will blink faster and faster until done (about 1-2 minutes).
If it does that, then itā€™s working properly, if it only flashes a few times, or solid LED itā€™s not working properly either due to not compatible USB stick, or no BIOS found on the USB that is properly named (M8R.CAP) and in proper format (.CAP BIOS)

Most likely, your USB Is not compatible. Try more USB, smaller/cheaper = better. USB needs to be formatted to FAT32, and BIOS must be on root of USB drive.

Here is other method using my guide for FPT flashing with modified BIOS - here is your variable to use from steps 1-5, you can start at step #6 now >> 0x8C6
[GUIDE] Grub Fix Intel FPT Error 368 - BIOS Lock Asus/Other Mod BIOS Flash

Or, you can also sometimes use AI Suite method mentioned here, but Iā€™ve not had any luck with that, on last page there is a few recent successes though so maybe I just had bad luck the few times I tried testing that way. AFU Method is also linked there
[Guide] How to flash a modded AMI UEFI BIOS

Before I flash my ASUS z170-a with a modded bios would it be okay to ask a few questions? My 8700k will be delivered today and I hope to get it up and running if possible.

I have modded my original bios (3802) using the all in one tool without error. I have used the bios renamer from ASUS for my board on the modded bios. I now have Z170.CAP and I believe I am ready to flash (correct me wherever I am wrong!!). If I understand correctly I should look for a cheap, small usb flash drive and format to fat32. Place an unmodded bios on there and see if USB Flashback works correctly. Only then place the modded bios on there and attempt to flash. If successful, power down without turning off the PSU and insert the 8700k with those two pins modded. Does this sound correct?

Thank you in advance!!!

EDIT: Although my board says it supports USB Bios FlashBack it does not?! I am a button push away from trying the EZflash through AI Suite method.

EDIT1: I pushed the button/flashed, it prompted a restart but it was a power down, inserted the 8700k, it did not post. I am not sure if my pin mod (I shorted the two pins only. AFAIK there is no need to isolate the others.
CORRECT ME if needed) was at fault or was the flash not successful? I thought flashing with EZ Flash in AISuite would take longer than it didā€¦

EDIT2: Okay, I had not successfully flashed my bios. I am an ez flash noob. At the point when I tell EZ flash to begin it prompts a restart and it should begin the flash there after and it does not. :(ā€¦ I will continue trying.

EDIT3: Still cannot flash with AISuite EZ Flash. Ordered a CH341A programmer. Chime in to let me know if that was a good move.

@JoeBlow - You can flash your BIOS using the Grub FPT guide I linked above in post #513, no need to wait on programmer. You will have to follow all steps, to get your BIOS lock (And SMI lock if present) variables.
However, for FPT flashing, please extract BIOS .rom/.bin from the capsule. Open BIOS .cap in UEFITool, right click the capsule in middle area and choose extract body, rename to whatever you want and use that in your FPT commands.
If you need me to get the variables for you let me know, but itā€™s pretty easy if you follow the guide.

Hello and thank you for responding. However, I fear I am unable to to follow your instructions. I am a fish out of water here and I apologize for that wholeheartedly. I am trying to learn as fast as I can. If it is at all helpful to know where I am at, here is what I think is a correctly modded 3802 bios for ASUS Z170-A. I get caught up with step one. My GUID is blank? It is late here so I will try harder tomorrow to follow your guide. Thanks again for responding and attempting to help me!! Cheers!

Youā€™re welcome! Maybe itā€™s all because you are tired, best to mess with BIOS still when you are rested and ready. Search GUID will be blank until you copy/paste a GUID In there, itā€™s search box there so you have to give it something to search for
I posted the commonly used GUID value for setup in the guide, copy it and past there, then the rest of the guide will make more sense. If you still cannot get it I will get the variables for you.

I believe my variable is 0x8C6

I am not step 6. Where is boot64.efi? here?

Also step 7, I am now go to look for a copy of Flash Programming Tool that matches my ME of 11.7.0.1014 but I am not sure where I will startā€¦ (where is the emoticon with the dunce hat?)

EDIT: Because of previously poor reading comprehension I now believe I have done step 6 correctly. I would like to ask about the USB drive. It should be formatted with FAT32 before placing renamed Shell.efi on it, correct?

EDIT1: For step 7 would ā€œIntel CSME System Tools v11 r16ā€ be correct to download and pull FPT for windows32 from it?? I found it here

I figured I would move on for now and have a look at Key Management within my bios. I do not see any option to clear keys.

EDIT: And as soon as I post I have to put my foot in my mouth. I can del the individual keys.

EDIT1: Deleted the keys and I think successfully unlocked the ability to flash

EDIT2: I am now on step 17, flashing bios in windows. I would like to confirm with @Lost_N_BIOS that the modded bios I am about to flash has been correctly prepared. It should support Sky Lake and Coffee Lake CPUs. If anyone cares to correct me I would like to ask: 8700k needs the two pin mod where two pads need to be shorted. The 8400 does not need any pin mod I think? Also Before I flash the version of FPTw should be Intel CSME System Tools v11 r16?

modded bios for ASUS Z170-A

You skipped some area or step, regarding the keys, if you disable secure boot and go back there you will have the option, I linked a few guides in that area to show how it can look in different BIOS.

Looks like you got it all sorted out, if that is your correct variable for BIOS Lock (Did you check SMI Lock too, if enabled you should disable that one too)

Yes, System tools V11 package for ME 11.xx based boards.

Sorry, I canā€™t comment about the Coffee CPU stuff, youā€™ll have to wait for someone else to confirm or research around here more Iā€™m sure itā€™s been answered.

Before you flash that BIOS, does it contain ME 11.7? If yes, research around some more for this Coffee mod, I think you need ME 11.6 something and backflashing ME without a programmer required another BIOS modification and the use of USB Flashback.
