[Guide] Transfer of specific Intel OROM VBIOS and GOP VBT settings by using Intel BMP tool

Thank you. For the setting in iBMP I know what most of them do and the meaning.
But I could not figure out how to extract and what to extract. And also what each VBT do.
That is why I was lost.

I need to extract EFCB9C70-8705-41EF-939D-B7818C80E60E with UEFITool ?
(This I don’t know how to do, I will try to figure it out)

Then I load it in iBMP with 203 vbt.bsf from your mega archive.
Then I Change the settings in iBMP, and save. To upload it back to the BIOS with UEFITool.

For now Thank you for telling me only 203 was active, did you check if it has 52Hz refresh rate locked ?

Use only UEFIYool v0.25.0

1) Open BIOS to UT (UEFITool)
2) Ctrl+F - Find as GUID
3) Locate on file (RAW Section)
4) "Extract body"
5) Edit this file to iBMP eith vbt.bsf v203
After
1-3
4) "Replace body"
5) Save and exit and flash

The BIOS turns out to be modified, so there can be a lot of nuances.
But get ready for a brick. So before flashing BIOS, you need to take care of the recovery options.
How to flash this is no longer for me.

Yes, I will definitely buy a flasher, I know about bricked devices, and will look for recovery before flashing.

I will not touch at default settings, because I found out this laptop is very picky about settings and sometime will not post when some settings have been modified (I remove the battery and it start again with default).

I will first try with only the gop modified settings, it should be close enough. because the 2017 and 2018 are basically the same bioses, only with 203 different settings.

I will try using replace with UEFITool now. Thank you.

Hi I did the vbt mod with iBMP.
I replaced the vbt guid with UEFITool v0.25. Then I compared both bios and the hex are very different !
But it’s probably normal, because even when I compare both 2017 and 2018 hex they are also very different.

I will order the black CH341A Black usb Flasher. I hope I will receive one with 3.3V, because I read there is an old version with 5V on the pins :

I want a method that create bios to be flashed by USB. So I can edit and flash easily.

I need to update VBT and GOP for this user, on two different BIOS, for now I am focusing on one as test subject to see if this helps to solve his issue. https://download.gigabyte.com/FileList/B…455n-d3h_f3.zip

User has no display at startup/Win10 loading etc, when using UEFI mode. He would prefer to use Win7, but that has other issues in OS with Intel driver and or Standard MS VGA driver.
Hoping maybe update of these items will help with at least one of those scenarios (preferably Win7, but I doubt)

The structure, or build method(?), of this BIOS is such that you cannot view DXE volume in any UEFITool, only in MMTool 5.02.0024/25
Replacing 24 with 25 does not help to find and define items in UBU Scan either, so all must be found and worked on manually from MMTool

Anyway, the question I have that I hope you can help with, there is 5x “Broxton” VBT in there, and I’m not sure why, or if I should update them all or somehow find out which is used etc?

@Lost_N_BIOS If I read that correctly you can’t update with CloneVBT, version wouldn’t be same, and size wouldn’t be same. I can confirm that at least for IVB, clonevbt doesn’t work for an update.

@SoniX Is there a way to find out which VBT a system/ bios does use in such a case?

(Why are manufacturers configure a bios with 5 different VBTs for UEFI but just one single orom with one single configuration for legacy? Just used an unchanged reference design? I own a Samsung HM75 notebook with 5 VBTs- 4 IVB, 1 SNB and would really like to know which one’s used by the dxe)

@lfb6 - Yes, I don’t know, that is why I asked. Yeah, I guess cloneVBT would not be ideal in update due to update
I think these different VBT’s are used for different display outputs, but I can’t be sure. Something I was looking at in there made me think such, but I’m not looking at the BIOS right now.

If I update my IVB GOP VBT from 165 to 174 with settings tranfer accoording to the book I have a dark screen until windows starts.

Samsung NP300E5C, HM 75, i7-3820qm, Phoenix bios- updated GOP drivers from 3.0.1015 to 3.0.1030 (IVB) [and 2.0.1018 to 2.0.1024 (SNB)] long ago, working fine with old GOP VBT 165

Relevant/ used is the first GOP VBT with the GIUD beginning with 60… .


If I leave this GOP VBT with 165 everything is fine, if I update this GOP VBT with 174 with settings transfered according to the book I get no picture/ a dark screen (no backlight, too) until graphic mode of Windows comes up.

There aren’t many settings changed/ added when changing from 165 to 174, tried to change these settings, but to no avail.

Tried another LCD- panel, same behaviour.

Tried a working GOP VBT 174 taken from another IVB notebook, same behaviour.

Tried the working GOP VBT 174 (taken from another IVB notebook) with the panel it works with in other notebook, same behaviour.


Someone an idea what’s the reason for this behaviour?

@lfb6 - you may need to also update VBT when updating 164 to 174, I am not 100% sure though someone else with more knowledge in this area will have to help you sort that out.
Or, it may just be 174 is not compatible with your system for some reason.

@Lost_N_BIOS Thanks for looking at this! I obviously mixed up these terms again!

The GOP driver ist updated a long time ago, but I didn’t update the GOP VBT to the corresponding version. It was:

IVB GOP 3.0.1015, VBT 165 ==>> GOP 3.0.1030, VBT 165 - working fine.

Now I try:

IVB GOP 3.0.1030, VBT 165 ==>> GOP 3.0.1030, VBT 174 - no picture, no backlight until Windows starts (settings transfered/ GOP VBT configured precisely following @SoniX s instructions)

So the latest IVB GOP driver works with an older GOP VBT, but not with the corresponding “right” GOP VBT version.


That reminds me a little of the problem ptran3014 has with his Broxton/ Apollolake boards for piano teaching since. But I am on ‘pure’ UEFI without CSM.

Hello. I have Ice Lake laptop from chinese vendor Hasee (KingBook X57S1). Got the latest BIOS from vendor (AMI) and it still has “old” GOP driver and “old” ME regions. So, i did update ME region - thanks for tools and guides (also unlocked hidden menus) + GOP.

So currently i have latest GOP driver for Ice Lake + latest ME and unlocked settings.

The problem is VBT GOP file - on latest BIOS update it’s 228, but i found on a forum here 230 version. So, currently latest GOP working with 228 okay and i have a question - should i update to VBT to 230? If yes - only manual way is possible, right?

With using guide from start of that topic i have a problem transferring settings from 228 to 229/230 (they are equal) inside BMP > many errors related to symbols. I will attach my BIOS, in case someone can help me answer how to transfer settings correctly and update VBT. Thanks!

@Lost_N_BIOS Last version working without errors 221. When going via 221 to 228 it gives detailed errors:

From 221 to 228 several settings disappeared, or syntax changed.
$eDP_Link_DataRate_01 00 with 0=1.62 Gbps, 1=2.7Gbps…
changed to
$eDP_Fast_Link_Training_Data_Rate_01 2A 03 with data rate replaced by frequency divided by 200kHz (see help text)

Relation of frequency to datarate isn’t completely clear to me here, but wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort) suggests:
HBR (High Bit Rate): 2.70 Gbit/s bandwidth per lane (270 MHz link symbol rate)
HBR2 (High Bit Rate 2): 5.40 Gbit/s bandwidth per lane (540 MHz link symbol rate), introduced in DP 1.2

If you change these items and values for all the 16 displays you’ll still get this list:

These values are no longer in 228- delete the lines in your transfer file and it will read without errors.

If the system you’re working on might miss these values is another question… (Fast Link training seems to be disabled anyway, the power options are Windows driver related- possibly won’t matter, too. Still $LVDS_Config and $180_degree_Rotation…)

@lfb6 - Thanks for your help looking at this! So 221 would be OK maybe, yes?
I’m not sure, in the VBT doc file, NONE of the versions mention going with any GOP as high as 9.0.1109, maybe I need to downgrade this too (To 9.0.1086)? This is probably the better thing to do here, I was not sure about this being SKY-CML anyway

@Lost_N_BIOS Since I just had the VBT I can only state that it works technically according to the described procedure with 221 with your VBT and the bsf 228 for SKL-KBL.

Which system does this system belong to? Are these versions you mention used with the original bios?

I’m doing a SKY >> Kaby Mod, vBIOS looks OK as-is, and I assumed GOP maybe was too (if SKL-CML also included between those @ Kaby)
But, due to VBT so low and SKY only, I was going to try to upgrade it to 228 so better fit with 9.0.1109 << But, this not even in the VBT doc file either.
And since stock VBT 203 updated to 221 OK, then I think I can just downgrade GOP to 9.0.1086 and update VBT to 221, correct?

@Lost_N_BIOS There are several configurations for Y910. If it’s from this thread [Request] Lenovo IdeaCentre Y910 7th Gen microcode

the original content is

EFI GOP Driver SKL-KBL - 9.0.1045
RAW GOP VBT SKYLAKE - 203
OROM VBIOS SKL-KBL - 1036

and that’d consistent with the original bios https://support.lenovo.com/sg/en/downloads/ds118645/

203 would also fit better to 9.0.1045 according to table

Seems to be SKL-KBL, but not CML??

And if this is the bios from the mentioned thread- it seems to have a rather corrupted ME, lots of red from MEA (didn't read if you did already work on that)
