Z77 Problem Cpu Multi Issue

Hi, my name is Alex glad i found this tech site
I have a problem with the motherboard AsRock Z77 Extreme 3
I can’t change the cpu multiplier higher than 37 which is the max turbo for my processor i5 2500k
Per core option is missing too and XMP profile
Thanks for your time

You should put board name in title, and maybe OC or CPU multi issue, so others can easily find later if needed.

Check BIOS main page and see if ME FW version is shown, if not then download HWINFO64 and on the large window on left side, expand motherboard and find ME area, inside that get the ME Firmware version.
Once you have that, go to this thread and in the section “C” download the matching ME System Tools Package (ie if ME FW version = 10.x get V10 package, if 9.0-9.1 get V9.1 package, if 9.5 or above get V9.5 package etc)
Intel Management Engine: Drivers, Firmware & System Tools

Once downloaded, inside you will find Flash Programming Tool folder, and inside that a Windows or Win/Win32 folder. Select that Win folder, hold shift and press right click, choose open command window here (Not power shell).
At the command prompt type the following command and send me the created file to modify >> FPTw.exe -bios -d biosreg.bin

Right after you do that, try to write back the BIOS Region dump and see if you get any error, if you do show me image of the command entered and the error given >> FPTw.exe -bios -f biosreg.bin
^^ This is important step, don’t forget ^^

If you are stuck on Win10 and cannot easily get command prompt, and method I mentioned above does not work for you, here is some links that should help
Or, copy all contents from the Flash Programming Tool \ DOS folder to the root of a USB Bootable disk and do the dump from DOS (FPT.exe -bios -d biosreg.bin)

Or here is simply registry edit that adds “Open command window here as Administrator” to the right click menu
Double-click to install, reboot after install may be required

Also, Tell me the ME FW version, so I can next show you how to update ME FW via the ME FW Update tool

You did load optimal defaults in the BIOS first correct? If not, clear CMOS, then do that now, and see if issue remains, just to be sure it’s not something here

What BIOS version are you using?

Similar issue solved here, so you can read over the process, and get links to tools needed etc. This not your same board, but same stuff we’ll be doing
z77 + 3570k can’t overclock over x38

And, I just finished looking it over, you can skip everything mentioned above… Fflash programmer was required to fix this, so order one now. You need CH341A + SOIC8 test clip with cable if BIOS is flat and soldered to the board, or U Type Flat IC Extractor if BIOS is in a socket

Ok so i shift left click the folder and run the command via CMD and it says i need admin rights,
The version of ME is 8.1 i think
The bios version is P1.60

Hold shift + right click, the choose open command window here (This makes Admin command prompt open). I see in your first image you got it finally!
Anyway, did you read my last comment, this all waste of time, you need flash programmer to fix this issue.

Powershell shouldn’t be used for anything here. And, what are you showing in that last image anyway, that is MEInfo output, not any update?
As mentioned, we’ve already tested fixing ME and BIOS by software, all flash success but issue remained, only fixable by flash programmer.

Oh…ok
Thanks for your time then

@alekskz You’re welcome, sorry it’s not easily fixable by software flashing, we could try but I know it will be waste of time.
CH341A + SOIC8 test clip with cable is only $7 shipped total, let me know if you need linked examples Or, if BIOS is in socket, then CH341A + U Type Flat IC Extractor is less than $5 total shipped.

I’m open for trying via software flashing
I live in Romania and this CH341A + SOIC8 is hard to find
I’ll be very happy if you would furhter assist me in this matter with software flashing

Edit: I did take a look at my motherboard(Z77 Extreme 3) and it looks like the bios chip is in a slot that can be pulled out.
But as i said i would love to give it another try via software!

@alekskz - You can order those on ebay, or any local auction place that sells computer stuff should have them too (or amazon if you can order from there).
Since you have socketed BIOS, you only need CH341A and U Type Flat IC extractor (not required, but best to use so you don’t damage the legs trying to pull chip without it)
It’s not that software flashing is hard or anything, it just isn’t going to work, I’ve helped several people fix this on various threads and it always ended at only being fixed with flash programmer.

Please run this command at FPT folder and send me the created file >> FPTw.exe -desc -d fd.bin

@Lost_N_BIOS Here is the file https://ufile.io/1rwacmn6

Edit: Found the CH341A to order but i’m leaving for the weekend and I’m coming back monday morning
If you would be kind enough to tell me the steps to flash the bios with the programmer ( i know how to extract the chip from mb and how to insert it into the programmer)

@alekskz - Once you get it, I will make you BIOS to use with programmer, here is guides about using programmer but unfortunately the one with most images has all the images down right now
https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-G…341A-programmer << Same as one directly below, but with all images expanded/visible at once << This is one I meant, best one with most images, but all are done right now
[GUIDE] Flash BIOS with CH341A programmer
[Guide] Using CH341A-based programmer to flash SPI EEPROM
[GUIDE] The Beginners Guide to Using a CH341A SPI Programmer/Flasher (With Pictures!) << this ones images still here

Don’t program in stock BIOS, and do not erase or write anything to the chip until you make a good backup that I’ve confirmed is OK, this way you know you have working method (software version and ID used) and you have a good backup in case needed later.

Be VERY careful extracting chip if you do not have a chip extractor, you can bend the legs very badly very easily without one of those!

From your FD, this is what you can write with FPT. So we cannot fix ME region with FPT, and even when this is made possible usually doesn’t help (something not written properly)
We can try update ME FW with ME FW Update tool + Write BIOS region with FPT using -rewrite command = erases first and then writes) But, as I mentioned in several other threads none of this helps.
BIOS access table:
Read Write
Desc Yes No
BIOS Yes Yes <<
ME No No
GbE Yes Yes <<
PDR No No

Here, we try software and see if it helps, if not then wait for your programmer to arrive is only thing we can do - http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?fil…976197687021782

Included in this package is all things you need for instructions I give below, and all files are in place (ie in the folders where I give commands from below)
This is updated cleaned ME FW + stock BIOS region only, does not contain your original NVRAM (you may be missing serial and or Ethernet LAN may not work). If this works (fixes CPU stuff), then we put back your original NVRAM and see if that causes issue again

First, update ME FW via FWUpdLcl.exe from the Local-Win folder inside FW Update tool folder. Select that Local-Win folder, hold shift and press right click, choose open command window here, then run the command below
FWUpdLcl -f ME.bin

Then once done with above, in Flash Programming Tools folder, select the Windows folder, then hold shift + press right click, choose open command window here and run the command below
FPTw.exe -rewrite -f biosregstock.bin

If you get red warning or size warning (or any other warning that is not GbE/PDR) at above command stop, show me the error and command entered all on same screen do not attempt to do anything else, and do not reboot.
If you must reboot, before doing so, take your original biosreg.bin and flash it via >> FPTw.exe -f biosreg.bin
If you get error and reboot without doing the above first, system will be bricked until you get programmer

I will do all this when i come back home(monday)
Have a nice weekend, see you monday

OK, enjoy your weekend!

Hi, I’m back home

https://imgur.com/a/2D8Pdi8

@alekskz - good thing that failed! Sorry, I left out the bios flag >> FPTw.exe -rewrite -bios -f biosregstock.bin

So, I take it, the ME FW write before this went in properly?

I don’t have high hopes here, so you shouldn’t either, we’ve done all this before in several threads and it doesn’t fix it for some reason (and it should, but doesn’t )

should i go and restart the pc?
gave it a restart went in bios, the multiplier still stuck
tomorrow my programmer should arrive and will do it with that

Edit: https://imgur.com/a/OoCp2Nr

Did you reflash with command I gave at post #14 now, and all was OK? Yes, I see so in your image. And, ME FW was done first, before this, correct?
If yes, you can try this and see if it helps, doubt it, but try, close all apps because reboot coming >> FPTw.exe -greset

Yes, once you have programmer we can fix!

@Lost_N_BIOS went ahead and restart the pc one again, the problem persists.
Will wait for the programmer, thank you !

Yes, I assumed it would remain, not sure why/how that’s possible, but I think it’s due to something in the ME FW doesn’t get corrected when updating it with ME FW update tool.
I can’t remember if FPT flash of ME FW can help fix it, it should with -rewrite since all is erased, but most users cannot flash ME FW with FPT anyway without doing pinmod first and unlock FD, or having flash programmer to unlock FD (so at that point, might as well correct all with programmer anyway)

Tomorrow morning my programmer will arrive.
Can you guide me with the necessary steps in order to get this working?
I would like to have the knowledge to do this so i dont havr to wait tomorrow for your respone if possible.

Here is guides, sadly the one with most images to show how to use has all the images missing due to photobucket/tinypic are crap photo hosts these days
[GUIDE] Flash BIOS with CH341A programmer
[Guide] Using CH341A-based programmer to flash SPI EEPROM
[GUIDE] The Beginners Guide to Using a CH341A SPI Programmer/Flasher (With Pictures!)

Main thing, open software (all versions) and on the “Auto” Function, uncheck erase and blank check. That way nothing gets erased accidentally.
Then dump BIOS by >> Read, verify, and if chip/buffer match then save. Then do nothing, send me that to check and to grab your details from to put in new BIOS, this way you know you have a good backup before you erase or write anything, this also lets you know what version software works or not for your chip.
Give me your BIOS chip ID, in case I need to tell you use a certain version or certain software, or other than exact ID

Here is general CH341A software package - http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?fil…695330485827902

Once confirmed you have good backup, I will make you new BIOS to program in.
