[Guide] Overclock BIOS mods for Chinese X99 MBs

Thank you for providing the BIOS. I updated D1-M1-B1-251005 on the XD4 motherboard and was able to overclock! However, I encountered a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager and cannot install it. I need your help.

Short answer:

  • Try the Machinist U9 BIOS that I linked to earlier. Works with XMC flash chip, and I was able to overclock a 1660V3 CPU with it. So BLCK overclocking might also work.

Longer answer:

  • I think you are missing some really core things here. Yes, there are different 9.x.y ME versions available. But what matters by far the most, is how they are configured and especially how that matches your particular hardware
  • You run a really high risk of getting many strange stability problems and drive corruption when you start to increase BCLK more than ~2%. So while tweaking can be fun and informative, I am afraid that you will probably not get very far with what you want to do. If the aim is to increase performace in a tangible way, then my suggestion would be to dig into RAM tweaking.

Congratulations, and yes, the XD4 works great with my modded BD4 BIOS. To answer your question:

first of all, I would want to apologize for taking so much time to answer, but it took me this long to get to use a friend’s PC suitable for this GPU, as I don’t know any (yet, cause I believe that your guide can help me to solve the compatibility)… I tried to use GPU-Z with the X99 for at least giving you some data, but as I expected, only recognized one of the GPUs.

The 9060xt is a PowerColor Reaper 16GB 9060xt, you guessed well, and the vBIOS date is 2025-03-24, (I don’t know the format) (I shot an extra photo in case it is helpful anytime, but I am not able to attach it since I can only attach one as a new user.) but GPU-Z didn’t display the number of HDMI or DP (However, the GPU has 2 DP and 1 HDMI, the motherboard hasn’t got any video output ports.)

I did the BIOS dump, I’ll send it to you.

Just, could you tell me a file to flash (since you shared this mod and this original BIOS, but you told me to use them if I had an external programmer and the original motherboard doesn’t look like mine at all, but I cannot confirm it wouldn’t work) and a preferible flashing method without a programmer? Or tell me if it’s a better idea to crossflash the GPU first instead.

You are welcome! First of all, send me a dump of your motherboard BIOS. I can run quite a lot of checks with that.

Checking the TPU database again there is now an exact match for your card, though it is an unofficial upload. Build date is 2025-June-17, so if this problem ever was fixed from PowerColor side (not known at this stage), the date is at least “new enough”. If I were you, I would go about it like this:

The software tool for flashing has not seen an update since last time.

I got myself an X99-XD4 motherboard and flashed the optimal Mi899 BIOS for it and everything works fine.

But now I noticed there is a ‘newish’ BIOS http://www.angxunmb.com/web/index.php?topclassid=46&classid=91&lanstr=en&wap=1&page=1 “X99-XD4-V2.0_003_2025-11-13” which seems to be from last month, has anybody tested it?

First of all I need to ask you this: What is wrong/isn’t working with the slightly modded stock BIOS you got from the Mi899 app? You do state that everything is fine, so I really am curious what the point of your post is?

I have already looked at the updated XD4 and DS4 BIOS, and it looks primarily like they have added support for more flash chips. My methodology is explained in this post, if you are interested in low level details.

Seems like this solved the problem completely.

Flashing the vBIOS (Powercolor, not ASRock), for some reason, won’t change the data displayed on GPUZ at all, after shutting down and booting Windows again, the exact same version was displayed as well as the build and time date, however “just in case” I tried it on the X99 and it worked just fine.

I have been trying it, mostly with ROCm (everything on Linux, I didn’t use Windows further in the X99, but I assume it works fine too) and everything looks fine.

Still, if you want me to send you the dump of the BIOS, I can, I forgot to send it before as I wrote the report :smiling_face_with_tear:.

Glad to hear you got it working! And what you did proves that there are more solutions that just “flash ASRock vBIOS” for this problem, which is great information to have in the public domain.

Based on what you are describing, I would assume that the “Dual partition vbios” kicked in. Meaning:

  • After flashing the GPU booted just fine with the old vBIOS on the first computer. This is why you didnt see any differences
  • But on your X99 board, it didnt boot. Therefore the second vBIOS partition kicked in, and you got a boot
  • If you would install Windows on your X99 board, then it should show a change/new date in GPU-Z
  • And if you want to be really sure that the GPU will work fine in the future, make sure to flash both the “active” and “inactive” partitions as described in the first post on OCN

Since it worked with just updating vBIOS, then clearly there is no need to send me your BIOS. Especially if you are just going to run it as a Linux machine with ROCm for its lifetime, then I honestly see no real gain in a newer BIOS.

I am a user from China. I have encountered the issue you mentioned. In your case, you need to connect the motherboard’s 24-pin power supply for the CH341A to recognize the BIOS chip. My motherboard model is X99ZV102A.

Let us start off 2026 with some good news! I have finally been able to get newer flash chips to work with the BD4 BIOS. The files can be downloaded from here. In particular support for these flash chips were added:

This means that finally we have a fully featured BIOS working on X99D3M4/X99D4M4/Machinist X99-B9 (XMC flash chip). And support for Fudan FM25W is already needed. The latest Machinist PR9 uses this flash chip, and so did a X99-XD4 board I just bought (manufactured in December 2025). The delivery form of this is now “a la carte”. What does this mean practically? Basically follow this workflow:

  • Step 1: Pick BIOS B1 or B2 depending on the CPU you want to use
  1. To overclock 16xxV3 or Extreme Edition CPUs, then use the B1 BIOS
  2. If you want TBU (Turbo Boost Unlock) on 26xxv3 CPUs, then use the B2 BIOS
  3. If unsure and/or using a V4 CPU, then use the B1 BIOS
  • Step 2: Take the correct ME (Management Engine) region for your motherboard, and swap it in using UEFITool 0.28.0
  • Step 3: Use AMIBCP 5.02.0034 and double check that the “IIO 0” setting is the same as your original BIOS
  • Step 4: Use an external programmer to flash. Critical: A flasher with 3.3V support is not optional, 5.0V like on older CH341A will very likely kill the newer chips

Here is a list of what ME region to use for different motherboards. Links are provided for boards not verified by myself personally.

  • M1: X99Z V102, X99-XD4, Qiyida X99-H9S
  • M2: ZX99EV3, X99D3M4, X99D4M4, Machinist X99-B9, Jingsha X99-8D3
  • M3: Machinist X99-PR9
  • M4: Machinist X99-U9, Machinist X99-V9S (Untested as of 2026-Jan-03, very likely to work after modifying IIO 0, please provide feedback)

Some examples to clarify the workflow

  • Example 1: X99D3M4 with a 2666V3 chip: Put together a “D1_M2_B2” BIOS
  • Example 2: Machinist X99-PR9 with a 2667V4 chip: Put together a “D1_M3_B1” BIOS, change IIO 0 to x4x4;x16;x8x8
  • Example 3: Machinist X99-U9 with a 1650V3 chip: Put together a “D1_M4_B1” BIOS, change IIO 0 to x4x4;Auto;x8x8
  • Example 4: A board with a 9.x.y ME region. First extract the ME region, then put together a “D1_MENEW_B1” BIOS, IIO 0 according to original
  • Example 5: A board without a 9.x.y ME region (like SPS 3.x). You need to do trial and error with different ME regions from other boards. This is exactly what I did with the X99-XD4 board. Koshak BIOS repository is where I started. Start by putting together a “D1_METEST_B1” BIOS, IIO 0 according to original


On a technical note, the change log from previous release is relatively easy to summarize:

  • Using “Step 2, Way 2” method described in this post, I used UEFITool and extracted the 8 relevant files from the Angxun DS4 v1.6 BIOS in .ffs format
  • Then I just replaced them in the BD4 BIOS, which was unexpectedly simple based on my previous experiences
  • Sidenote: To just make the system boot, it was actually enough to just replace NVRAMDxe and NVRAMSmm. But I went with all 8 files in the end.

Generic X99H Headless Boot Issues

​Sorry if this is a bit out of place, but I stumbled upon this thread after a lot of searching.

​I’m trying to run my system totally headless (boot without any GPU plugged in), but I’m hitting a wall. My motherboard is a generic Chinese X99H (the DDR3 version). Right now, it requires a GPU just to pass POST. I’m currently using an Arc A380, but I need to reclaim that slot.

​I’ve tweaked every setting I can find in the BIOS, but it refuses to boot if the GPU is missing. I’m pretty sure this is the board model: https://ibb.co.com/S4G63SHB.

​I’m comfortable flashing the BIOS, but I have no idea which direction to take to achieve a true headless boot. Any advice would be huge.

This is not really a use case for me at all. But let us start in this end: Can you provide an actual full 16M BIOS dump? If the text in the picture you showed is true (B85 chipset), then there might be a way forward.

The layout matches, but mine is the DDR3 version.

​Regarding the BIOS dump: I’ve heard using the wrong programmer can cook these boards. Can you confirm if this one will work safely?

​I’m trying to salvage this build because I have 64GB of DDR3 ECC RAM. However, if there is a known X99 board that supports DDR3 and headless booting out of the box, I am open to buying a replacement.

That CH341A should work just fine, and it’s definitely a must for bad flash recovery. Just to be sure can you take a picture of the BIOS chip?

Regarding the headless boot feature, I’m not sure which BIOSes in particular support it, but there are many BIOSes available for you to try. Just use Intel FPT with the parameter “-bios” to flash ONLY the BIOS region. I think you can start with Huananzhi X99-BD4 BIOS.

Regarding CH341A: This is really flash chip dependent. To avoid destroying newer 5V intolerant chips (not the common Winbond ones), I bought an updated CH341A version that can select four different voltage levels: 5.0 ; 3.3 ; 2.5 and 1.8V. Then I can safely flash all common motherboards and GPUs with a single programmer, no need for playing around with voltage level shifters etc.

I checked some typical settings that are common in basically all Chinese X99 boards. Maybe you do not need to change BIOS to go headless. See below screenshot for what you can try. To be clear : You need CSM to be enabled for this to potentially work. So boot normally, load setup defaults, and then change this value to “Do not launch”.

See the IIO 0 picture in my latest major BIOS release. Based on my own recent experience, setting IIO 0 correctly before flashing a modded BIOS can under some circumstances (board physical layout, PCIe lanes available from CPU etc) be the difference between getting a picture and not getting one.
